VINDER af ECHO KLASSIK 2017 i Kategorien: CONCERT RECORDING (music up to and including 18th Century)

Magasinet Klassisk September 2016

Mozart wrote his Violin Concertos in 1775 while still living in his home town of Salzburg and in service to Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. Mozart had already toured internationally and found his parochial environment restricting, but as ever he rose above circumstances to create sublime and thrillingly unconventional masterpieces filled with wit and charm. The finely sustained melodic expression of each concerto’s slow centre provides the perfect foil for inventive sparkle in outer movements that include a cheeky reference to the opera Il re pastore in K. 216, and an exotic ‘Turkish’ moment in the finale of K. 219.

Politiken 9. august 2017.

Ravel’s unknown, tender sonata fragment, Poulenc’s dramatic, sad violin sonata and Prokofiev’s dark sonata in F Minor. Guro Kleven Hagen and Marianna Shirinyan have chosen a dream repertoire for their first release together. The album’s first piece derives from a sonata written by Ravel in 1897 at the age of 22 – the same age as Hagen – which was discarded and not rediscovered until 1975. In this movement, many of the shifts and the poetic expression that became Ravel’s trademark are apparent. In 1942/43, while his country suffered from horrible war, Francis Poulenc wrote his only published violin sonata. Premiered by David Oistrakh in 1946, Sergei Prokofiev’s first violin sonata concludes the program. The artists themselves say: ‘Dreams can be crushed into tears during the horrors of war. In the same way, as in these three sonatas by Ravel, Poulenc and Prokofiev, music has the ability to make us day-dream and to recall our tears and strong emotions.’

Ellen Andersson Quartet has now released their debut album on Prophone Records/Naxos: ”I’ll Be Seeing You” - an album which will not pass anyone by unnoticed. The album, recorded in Copenhagen, also features amazing guests, Peter Asplund (SE) and Oilly Wallace (DK).

Ellen Andersson Quartet is a group of a fairly common jazz format: vocals, guitar, double bass and drums, which mainly focuses on own arrangements of songs from The Great American Songbook. The music is characterized by its vast range of storytelling and emotion, where playfulness encounters great seriousness.

The group wants to find a middle ground where the tradition can meet the present, while never losing musical integrity and personality.

Ellen Andersson has one of the most unique voices in Swedish jazz right now, and except being the carrier of melody and lyrics, she is also an improviser who challenges the musical boundaries between instrumentalists and vocalists.

Image The Alehouse Sessions

The Alehouse Sessions – curated and devised by Bjarte Eike, is an ever changing and evolving insight into the music of the English 17th Century tavern. It gives audiences a window into this tumultuous period through Purcell overtures, English sea shanties, and Scandinavian folk songs thrown in for good measure. The atmosphere of a raucous port city pub in the 1690s is brilliantly evoked by Barokksolistene. These sessions have already been hailed as ‘irresistible’ [The Times], ‘superb’ [The Scotsman] and ‘fabulously unrestrained’ [The Guardian], and they have diverted away from the traditional concert model by ‘creating the effect of a late night jamming session’ [BBC Music Magazine]. ‘The signature of this project is the interaction on stage between the players and the audience. If it has to be put in a historical context, the project draws its inspiration from the Shakespearian theatre where there was a direct communication between stage and hall’ says Bjarte Eike.

Image Tosca (DVD)
Tosca – the epitome of Italian opera. It is a thrilling story about desire, passion and death. A story about one beloved woman and two men, who fight a duel – one of them is an angel and the other one a demon. Benoît Jacquot, the successful French film director, does not create a stage performance but an opera for the cinema in 2001. A bold idea and an exciting venture – he loves his actors, the close-up shots and he has developed his own style as it turned out in many other of his films before. The result is a wonderful production of one of Puccini’s greatest operas with an amazing set design, beautiful costumes and an emotional performance by Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, the opera dream couple at that time, in the main roles and Ruggero Raimondi as counterpart.

Image Between the Seasons
The extreme - wind, snow, cold, rainfall, thaw and heat - are vividly experienced in Kraggerud's interpretation of The Four Seasons. Henning Kraggerud manages to capture the climatic range experienced on top of the world in his music-making.

Inspired by Kremer and Desyatnikov's combination of Vivaldi and Piazzolla, Kraggerud has included four of his own works in-between the seasons. The pieces chosen evokes different connotations and new angles through which we can experience the world's most popular classical work. Kraggerud's pieces both comment and contrast Vivaldi's moods - positioned as it were between the seasons, forming an eight spoke wheel.

The album is accompanied by poetic liner notes from author Erik Fosnes Hansen, chronicling Vivaldi's life story and relating it both to the music and also the sonnets that were printed along with the original work: 'These admired and loved musical illustrations are like tapestries from a vanished era. They tell of simple, ordinary things that happen in the seasons, with all the drama that can lie in such simple and ordinary events. But just as a year has its seasons, so too does a life. So, let us look more closely at the life of this composer.'

Erik Fosnes Hansen is a Norwegian award-winning author, his work is translated into more than 30 languages.
