JANUARY NEWS 2021

NEW ON NAXOS

The first edition of NEW ON NAXOS for 2021 celebrates the audiovisual release of Opera Lafayette’s production of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore. The original version of Fidelio, this performance, directed by Oriol Thomas and conducted by Ryan Brown, is the company’s first German opera production, and the centerpiece of Opera Lafayette’s 25th anniversary in 2019. The assembled cast is led by soprano Nathalie Paulin, with tenors Jean-Michel Richer and Keven Geddes, and bass-baritone Stephen Hagedus. Opera Lafayette’s 2017 modern premiere of Gaveaux’s Léonore, ou L’Amour conjugal was praised by Gramophone, describing it as ‘an enterprising and rewarding production’.

Other highlights include:
• The acclaimed 2019 Teatro dell’Opera di Roma production of Sergey Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel, staged by Emma Dante. Versatile conductor Alejo Pérez leads a strong cast starring soprano Ewa Vesin and baritone Leigh Melrose, with the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

DECEMBER NEWS 2020

NEW ON NAXOS

Our final issue of NEW ON NAXOS for 2020 presents the world premiere recording of the original 1821 Rome version of Gioachino Rossini’s opera Matilde di Shabran, presented by the Rossini in Wildbad Festival. Conducted by José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, this outstanding revival stars soprano Sara Blanch and tenor Michele Angelini in the title roles, joined by contralto Victoria Yarovaya, baritone Emmanuel Franco and bass Shi Zong, among others. Since its foundation in 1989, the Festival has performed Rossini’s lesser-known operas alongside those of his contemporaries, which has led to numerous highly acclaimed releases on Naxos.

• Volume 1 of Vítezslav Novák’s orchestral works recorded by the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra under Marek Štilec. Featuring the South Bohemian Suite and symphonic poem Toman and the Wood Nymph

NOVEMBER NEWS 2020

NEW ON NAXOS

The November edition of NEW ON NAXOS celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of French composer Florent Schmitt, with a collection of his poetic orchestral works presented by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor JoAnn Falletta. The GRAMMY-winning team performs the symphonic poem La Tragédie de Salomé and the exquisite Musique sur l’eau featuring mezzo-soprano Susan Platts, as well as the world premiere recording of Légende in its version for violin and orchestra, marking BPO concertmaster Nikki Chooi’s Naxos debut as soloist. Falletta and the BPO have previously recorded Schmitt’s Antony and Cleopatra suites, receiving 5-star ratings from Pizzicato: ‘Falletta succeeds extremely well in realizing the mixture of brilliance and sensuality which characterizes Schmitt’s music’; and Classical Music magazine: ‘this makes a fine introduction to a neglected composer.’

NEW ON NAXOS

The NEW ON NAXOS October edition presents the world premiere recordings of Peter Breiner’s Caressing Your Soul, a collection of calm, tranquil and serene piano music, that melds melodic substance with musical expression to provide solace, relief and peace of mind. Breiner is one of the most successful composers/performers in the music world, with record sales in the millions and over 200 albums to his credit, including major projects such as Beatles Go Baroque Vols. 1 and 2, Slovak Dances, Naughty and Sad and the Complete National Anthems of the World.

Other highlights include:
• Choreographer Jirí Bubenícek’s Carmen, a two-act ballet inspired by Bizet’s hit opera, which also includes music by Albéniz, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Falla, in new orchestrations by Gabriele Bonolis. The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma production features outstanding soloists Amar Ramasar, Alessio Rezza, and Rebecca Bianchi in the title role.
