NEW ON NAXOS

Here is the August issue of NEW ON NAXOS. This month’s spotlight recording is the DVD and Blu-ray release of Charles Gounod’s Gothic melodrama La Nonne sanglante (‘The Bleeding Nun’) in a highly acclaimed revival by Opéra Comique, directed by David Bobée. Other highlights include:

• Franco Faccio’s opera Amleto, based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, recorded live at the 2016 Bregenz Festival, featuring a top notch cast lead by tenor Pavel Cernoch in the title role, with the Prague Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener Symphoniker conducted by Paolo Carignani.

• World premiere recordings of three new works by composer and clarinetist Derek Bermel – Migration Series, Mar de Setembro and A Shout, a Whisper, and a Trace – presented by the GRAMMY® Award-winning Albany Symphony and music director David Alan Miller, with soloists Ted Nash on saxophones and vocalist Luciana Souza, with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra.

Image Amleto
First performed in 1865, Amleto (Hamlet) represented a radical new development in Italian opera, the nuovo melodramma. Composer Franco Faccio and his librettist Arrigo Boito sought a greater degree of musical unity in staged productions and a more equal relationship between text and music. In Hamlet, a play that many then considered un-operatic, they found the perfect medium through which to explore the works philosophical and dramatic power not least the great set-piece scenes: Amletos soliloquy Essere o non essere! (To be or not to be), Ofelias Mad Scene and the fight scenes in a way that strikingly prefigures the verismo operas yet to come.
