"Boris Giltburg’s new Liszt release is fascinating. He plays the Etudes in a very narrative way, with a lot of drama and poetic feelings as well" Remy Franck, Pizzicato

"Giltburg makes the music sound vital, alive and more colorful than in many other accounts of the work" Robert Cummings, MusicWeb International

"Giltburg’s approach is fundamentally lyrical, rhetorically apt and, aided and abetted by Prieto and the Scots, sensitive to every marking in the score" Patrick Rucker, Gramophone

A fiendish but fabulous piano concerto performed with a glorious blend of technical prowess and lyricism.

The previous concerto disc in this series was the Second Concerto on 8.573629 of which Gramophone wrote: ‘The fusion of freshness with generous spirit and soul lends an enthralling dynamism to this familiar repertoire. Boris Giltburg faithfully observes Rachmaninov’s marks of expression in the concerto and the Op 33 Etudes, but there is a fluid imagination at work here tied to an enquiring musical intelligence.’

"Rachmaninov’s music for piano, with and without orchestra, is being superbly well served on disc nowadays, and this Naxos CD is yet another notable example" Roy Westbrook, MusicWeb International

Politiken skriver:Giltburg er den langsomste af de tre, og hans mørke bredde og svulmende muskuløsitet klæder musikken. Her er selvsikkerhed, patina og alvorligt flot orkesterspil.

The second of Boris Giltburg’s Rachmaninov releases features the perennially popular Piano Concerto No. 2 as well as the Etudes-tableaux, Op. 33. The Etudes-tableaux Op. 39 and Moments musicaux can be heard on 8.573469.

"Giltburg offers fully projected, concert-hall-style accounts, with all the richness of pedal and no-holds-barred attack that would suggest" David Fanning, Gramophone

"The recorded sound is excellent for both venues, the performances are top notch and, importantly, the mood is impeccably judged by a team of expert Shostakovich interpreters" Simon Thompson, MusicWeb International

Shostakovich’s two Piano Concertos span a period of almost thirty years. The youthful First Piano Concerto is a masterful example of eclecticism, its inscrutable humour and seriousness allied to virtuoso writing enhanced by the rôle for solo trumpet. Written as a birthday present for his son Maxim, the Second Piano Concerto is light-spirited with a hauntingly beautiful slow movement. With the permission of the composer’s family, Boris Giltburg has arranged the exceptionally dark, deeply personal and powerful String Quartet No. 8, thereby establishing a major Shostakovich solo piano composition.

"[Boris Giltburg] is a musical and thoughtful player, and his account of Beethoven’s last sonata, Op.111, in particular is highly accomplished, the opening movement delivered with all the drama and intensity it calls for, and the valedictory variation fínale conveying an air of luminous warmth" BBC Music Magazine

"Giltburg’s highly articulated fingerwork…gives appropriate variety and character to the gnarly writing… Naxos provides superb, full-bodied and detailed sound" Jed Distler, Gramophone

Ludwig van Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas form an unparalleled canon, remaining one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges for pianists to this day. These three sonatas represent Beethoven's Early, Middle and Late periods but are united in the key of C - minor, for the dramatic and stormy intensity of mood in the Pathétique, and major for the radiant and poetic Waldstein sonata. In his sonata Op. 111 the cycle is completed with music of utmost dramatic tension and the deepest spirituality.

5/5 i DN

Boris Giltburg (piano)

Boris Giltburg was selected by the great Zubin Mehta as the winner of the first Pnina Salzman Prize in Israel 2011 and has won many other prestigious prizes, including the top prize and Audience Prize in the Santander International Piano Competition, and second prize and Best Classical Concerto in the Artur Rubinstein Competition.

An exceptionally busy and versatile performer, he recently replaced Denis Matsuev at one day's notice performing Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.3 on tour in Germany.

This CD is the culmination of many months of constant performance and study of Prokofiev's War Sonatas, and the highly detailed and insightful booklet notes have also been written by Boris.

'It isn't every day young pianists are compared to the great Richter, but Boris Giltburg has been on more than one occasion. In a sense, you can hear why: his Chopin Ballades at the Wigmore sounded gloriously poetic and free as he pushed and pulled at their tempi. It was old-school, but magical and quite ravishing too.'
