Image Alessandro Scarlatti Collection (30 CD)
A prolific Baroque composer of great skill, recognised by music historians particularly for his development of the Italian vocal style, the Sicilian-born Alessandro Scarlatti was overshadowed in his own day by Bach, Handel, Rameau and Vivaldi and later by his composer son Domenico, who would transition into the Classical era and is widely appreciated for his more than 500 keyboard sonatas. Usually described as a Neapolitan composer, Alessandro Scarlatti had strong ties as well to Rome, where he spent about half of his active career. The fact that at least 40 of his operas survive from his first 18 years in Naples as maestro di cappella (1684–1702) – and he is likely to have written twice that many during that period– gives an indication as to his abundant creativity both there and in Rome, where he thrice lived and worked: as a young man, again while in his forties, and finally when approaching the age of 60. This set provides a rich sampling of Scarlatti’s vast output, with many great recordings not only of the vocal music for which he is most widely acclaimed –the duets, the comic intermezzos, the serenata La Gloria di primavera and the chamber cantatas, a genre he perfected, as well as the sacred oratorios, his Opus 2 sacred concertos and the Vespers and St Cecilia Mass – but also his unjustly neglected instrumental music, including 6 CDs devoted to his keyboard works. The first serious Edition of one of the most important but still neglected Italian Baroque composers: Alessandro Scarlatti, founder of the Neapolitan School, and a great influence on composers after him. Contains a substantial selection of large scale oratorios, operas, cantatas and instrumental music. Music of great invention, passion and brilliance. Performed on period instruments by Italian Early Music soloists and ensembles/orchestras. Recordings date from 1961 to 2015. Contains liner notes by Philip Borg-Wheeler.

Image Beethoven Complete Edition 2017 (85 CD)
It would not be an overstatement to declare that Ludwig van Beethoven stands as one of the most significant figures in Western civilisation: a composer who shaped the course of music history through his mastery of rhythm, melody and harmonic exploration, pushing the boundaries of form and effectively bridging the gap between Classicism and Romanticism – and yet all the while continuously professing how difficult he found composition. Detailing his complete output – from his earliest years to his last, by which time he had almost completely lost his hearing – this 85CD box reveals an extensive palette of styles and mediums, rendered all the more obvious by the box's division into different genres (starting with the symphonies and ending with the large corpus of different national folk songs). This box is the 2017 reissue of Brilliant Classics’ acclaimed Beethoven Complete Edition, with updates including Beethovenian pianist par excellence Alfred Brendel now in the complete cycle of Piano Concertos, Alessandro Commellato on historic fortepianos in brand new recordings of the 18 sets of ‘without opus’ piano variations, Emmy Verhey in the Violin Concerto and Romances and a definitive Mass in C from Stuttgart’s Gächinger Kantorei and Bach-Collegium. Image 7CD-BOX: The Complete Songs

Monica Groop, mezzo-soprano
Roger Vignoles, Ilmo Ranta & Love Derwinger, piano

When asked why songs had come to play such an important role in his œuvre, Edvard Grieg once said: 'I loved a girl with a wonderful voice and an equally wonderful gift as an interpreter.' The girl in question was Nina Hagerup, later to become Grieg's wife, and with whom he regularly performed many of his songs - as depicted on the painting on the cover of the present boxed set. These songs were thus a labour of love for Grieg - not just his love for Nina, but also for the poems that he chose to set: 'When I compose songs, my principal goal is not to write music but first of all to do justice to the poet's most secret intentions... If this task is performed well, then the music is successful too.' The 172 songs that make up this musical treasure-trove have, with some notable exceptions, received less than their share in terms of international recognition, largely due to the fact that the great majority of them are settings of Norwegian or Danish texts. The present collection includes a 184-page booklet containing all the song texts in the original language with parallel translations into English. The seven discs that make up the collection have previously been released separately, to great acclaim from reviewers around the world: 'Something of a landmark in the Grieg discography... Monica Groop penetrates the very essence of the Grieg spirit with the artlessness that conceals art', wrote International Record Review about one instalment, while a BBC Music Magazine review described another as 'an irresistible new take, thrilling to both the shadows and the bright high-latitude light in this music.' In her own introduction to the project Monica Groop writes: 'I have always felt a special and instinctive affinity for Edvard Grieg and his music ... I admire his gift of being able to write simple, natural music and I have sought to preserve this in performance.' In these endeavours the acclaimed Finnish mezzo-soprano has enjoyed the expert support of three fine pianists: Roger Vignoles, Ilmo Ranta and Love Derwinger.

Haydn Sinfonietta Wien (playing on period instruments)
Manfred Huss, conductor
Simon Standage, leader & solo violin

Haydn Sinfonietta Wien and Manfred Huss have possibly done more than any other performers when it comes to spreading the music of Haydn's earliest years, resurrecting scores which for decades and even centuries have been lying forgotten in archives. Their endeavours began already in the 1980s, and recordings of the composer's Scherzandi (the forerunners of the symphonies) and many other works were released on the Koch Schwann label in the 1990s. Long since deleted from the catalogue, these have become collectors' items, with asking prices reaching upwards of USD 150 even for used copies. Beginning in 2009, the team's collaboration with BIS has resulted in new and important additions to the Haydn discography, such as Acide, the earliest surviving stage work, and a collection of rare arias composed for the opera house at Eszterháza Palace. But parallell to these new projects, the acclaimed recordings of instrumental works have been resurrected, and remastered versions have been released together with newly written texts by Manfred Huss, taking in the results of the latest in Haydn research. Previous such collections are the 6-disc set of Scherzandi, Baryton Octets and Lira Concerti (BIS-CD-1796/98) and the 2-disc set of the complete overtures (BIS-CD-1818). Forming a worthy finale to this series of re-releases, the present set of five discs includes all of the extant early Divertimenti by Haydn: works composed in the 1750s and 60s for ensembles of winds and strings in various combinations and typically scored for between 5-9 players. The earliest divertimenti reveal roots in the Baroque (with beautifully eloquent slow movements), but also offer ample evidence of the young composer's powers of invention and eagerness to experiment, both in terms of form (the minuets suggestive of those in much later symphonies) and instrumentation - besides some spectacular writing for the French horn, Haydn was one of the first to use both the clarinet and cor anglais extensively. A common factor in the works including strings is the all-important, and often virtuosic parts for the first violin - here safely entrusted to the eminent Simon Standage, who is also the soloist in the Violin Concerto in C major Hob.VIIa:1 which has been chosen as the closing work of the box. Besides the recordings originally released by Koch/Schwann on five separate CDs, this set also includes 70 minutes worth of new recordings, focussing on the Feldparthien - those divertimenti which only involve wind instruments.

Image 6CD-BOX: Music for Prince Esterházy and the King o
Providing an opportunity to explore less familiar aspects of the great composer, this six-disc set contains works written for the house of Esterházy, Haydn's long-time employers, and for the King of Naples: from the Six Scherzandi, a set of 'miniature symphonies' probably composed in 1761, to the Eight Notturni for the King of Naples, composed around 1790. Up until the late 18th century, almost all music was written for a specific person or institution, and often with a specific occasion in mind. But the works featured here are associated with their maker's employer to an unusual degree: the Baryton Octets (and the Quintet Hob.X:10) were written for the private use of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy I, for performances that may have been heard by nobody but the musicians themselves. At such occasions, the part of the baryton, an instrument of the gamba family which was outmoded already at the time of composition, would be played by the Prince himself, while his favourite horn-player performed the highly virtuosic horn parts. Similarly, the 'Concerti a Due Lire' and the Notturni were commissioned by Ferdinand IV of Naples for his own consumption: a great lover of the 'lira organizzata' - a development of the hurdy-gurdy - he contacted a number of composers in order to expand the very limited repertoire of this highly unusual instrument. In fact, so unusual was the lira that Haydn, fearing that his music would never be played outside of the court in Naples, soon made versions in which the lira parts were replaced by other instruments. The result is to be heard here - glorious chamber music for various combinations of instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Haydn Sinfonietta Wien's acclaimed recordings of these works were originally produced and released by the Koch/Schwann label, with the exception of Notturni Nos 2, 4, 5 & 8, which, although recorded during the same period, were never released. For this collection the original recordings have been remastered by BIS Records.

Image 7CD-BOX: Complete Choros & Bachianas Brasileiras

(Dagens Nyheter)

The life and music of Villa-Lobos is intimately linked with the emergence of Brazil as a nation and cultural force during the first half of the 20th century. This applies especially to the two great cycles that he composed between 1920 and 1945: the 12 Choros and the 9 Bachianas Brasileiras. In the Choros the composer's stated aim was to achieve a synthesis of the various musical influences of Brazil: the popular urban music (such as the dances of European origin performed by chorões or street musicians), the music brought from Africa by slaves, and the chants and rhythms of the native Indian tribes. The Choros range from solo pieces with durations of a couple of minutes to large-scale scores for expanded symphony orchestra, sometimes comprising choir or solo instruments. The cycle also includes an Introduction, as well as a brief 'after-thought': the Two Choros (bis). After the completion of the Choros, Villa-Lobos in 1930 began his next great project, the Bachianas Brasileiras. Admiring its ability to communicate across all boundaries in time or place, Villa-Lobos once described the music of Bach as 'universal folk music' and here attempted a fusion between Bach and Brazilian music. This cycle also consists of various scorings: from solo instrument to choir a cappella and symphony orchestra, with Villa-Lobos providing parallel versions of two of them (Nos 4 and 9). All of these are included in this collection, which comprises recordings made between 2002 and 2006, and released as separate discs to universal acclaim: 'The complete set of Villa-Lobos's exotic and brilliant Bachianas Brasileiras surpasses, for me, all previous recordings in terms of execution, spirit and recorded sound' wrote the reviewer in Fanfare, including the discs on his 2008 'Want-List'. Equally well-received, the cycle of Choros was already before its completion described as 'a publishing feat' on the website The performances of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra were naturally in focus: 'The Brazilian players sound as if the music is in their blood ... and their ensemble is in no way inferior to that of any of their rivals' (Gramophone) and 'a world-class ensemble providing an assured blend of lush colours, pulsating rhythms and supple phrasing' (International Record Review) are only a couple of examples. The many solo performances appearing throughout the collection received similar praise, as witness the following examples: 'No. 5 with Donna Brown has to be the quintessential performance of this most famous of Bachianas' (American Record Guide), 'Jean Louis Steuerman plays with great finesse and understanding' (Gramophone), 'Cristina Ortiz proves a peerless pianist in this unique piece [Choros No. 11] ' ( This collection also includes a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet of Quinteto em forma de choros (a work often mentioned in connection with the Choros even if it does not form part of the cycle) as well as a separate disc containing Anders Miolin's recording of the complete music for solo guitar, much of which Villa-Lobos composed for the legendary Andres Segovia.

"Här finns allt"
(Norra Västerbotten)

To list the various distinctions awarded to the recordings that make up this sumptuous offering is almost impossible; suffice it to say that the entire series received the Grieg Award in 2007, the year of the hundredth anniversary of the death of the composer, as well as a very special commendation by the UK Grieg Society the same year. During 2003-2006, as the individual discs were released, reviewers all over the world were heaping praise over the series - astoundingly enough, as this is repertoire that at least in part belong to some of the most well-represented on disc. But this did not seem to matter to the critics, who described the performance of the Piano Concerto as one that 'will make you fall in love with the music all over again' (American Record Guide) and that of the Holberg Suite 'so compelling that it simply makes you forget about any other' (Classics, deeming the Peer Gynt Suites to be 'interpretations that rejuvenate even this almost hackneyed, overly familiar music, relieving it of all the ballast of performance history' ( It was the freshness of the performances by Ole Kristian Ruud and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra that struck most critics - freshness coupled with expertise: 'Bergen musicians have lived with these scores since their creation and all the performances here have a relaxed, idiomatic naturalness in their virtuosity' (Gramophone). A second point was the superior sound quality - the result of inspired and painstaking work by the BIS recording staff in combination with the splendid acoustics of the Grieg Hall in Bergen. 'Sonically this production features demonstration quality both in stereo and SACD multi-channel formats' wrote the reviewer of Classics; 'a fabulous complete cycle, admirably served by the splendid recording technique' was the verdict in Classica-Répertoire. The third factor contributing to the warm reception was of course the music itself, the fascination and power exerted by the Piano Concerto and the complete Peer Gynt, the emotion projected in Bergliot and Den Bergtekne, the charm and freshness of the orchestral songs and Lyric Suite - in the words of one reviewer: 'music that you'd have to be either deaf or dead not to love'. The complete traversal, generally considered a reference point in the Grieg discography, is now available in this stereo-only version at a very advantageous price.

Image 15CD-BOX: Complete Music for Solo Keyboard

In a recent review of his recording of Beethoven Piano Concertos, Ronald Brautigam was described in The Times (UK) as 'the king of that strange period beast, the fortepiano', whose Beethoven playing has 'made numerous listeners reassess their feelings about the short-breathed jangle of the fortepiano sound'. This description holds equally true for Brautigam's Haydn interpretations, as proven by the present collection of Haydn's complete music for solo keyboard: the extant 55 sonatas as well as sets of dances and variations and various independent pieces. Included is also an unusual keyboard arrangement of The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, published in 1787 with the composer's approval. These recordings were originally released between 1999 and 2004, in instalments which received universal acclaim, including a Cannes Classical Award in 2004. Provided with a new essay by Haydn biographer Marc Vignal, they have now been gathered in a boxed 15-disc set as part of BIS' celebration of the coming Haydn Bicentenary. The design makes it a companion to Brautigam's set of the solo keyboard music by Mozart (BIS-CD-1633/36), released in 2006.

Image 7CD-BOX: The Complete Music for Organ

Incorporating the fruits of the composer's untiring research into the various aspects of tonality, bird-song, ancient Indian and Greek rhythms, and his life-long preoccupation with the philosophy and liturgy of the Catholic Church, the organ music by Olivier Messiaen forms a pillar in the music of the 20th century. Over some 50 years, from Le banquet céleste to Livre du Saint-Sacrement, Messiaen created a body of works for the great Cavaillé-Coll organ in the Church of La Trinité in Paris, where he was active throughout most of his life. All of these have been gathered in this boxed-set of Hans-Ola Ericsson's highly acclaimed recordings, originally released as single discs between 1989 and 1992. Ericsson recorded his interpretations after an intense collaboration with the composer, and the result has been considered a landmark ever since the original releases. In 1998, the German magazine Die Zeit included the cycle in its listing of '111 Discs for the Coming Millennium' and in 2002 it was described as 'the most consistently excellent' by a reviewer in International Record Guide. The present collection also includes new recordings of three posthumous works - Monodie, Offrande au Saint Sacrement and Prélude - as well as recordings of the different birdcalls that Messiaen referred to in several of his scores. The extensive booklet - 232 pages! - contains a full-length essay in three languages (English, French and German) on Messiaen's organ music and the specific works by Anders Ekenberg, church musician and theologian. It also includes descriptions of the instruments used, as well as a detailed presentation of the different birds whose calls Messiaen included in so many of his organ works.

During his lifetime, Georg Philipp Telemann was widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the period - perhaps the greatest of them all, not forgetting J.S. Bach or Handel. But the very aspects that his contemporaries admired were the same that later critics would find questionable: his extensive and varied œuvre, the fluency with which he wrote in all genres and styles, and his manifestly modern, cosmopolitan outlook. Compared with Bach's more compact, serious music, Telemann's elegant, sophisticated style was judged to be lacking, and this unfavourable comparison has followed Telemann ever since. The truth is that, despite the size of his œuvre, Telemann rarely repeats himself; in spite of the ease with which he adopted new styles and idioms, he is far from superficial. On the contrary, his music is varied, innovative and diverse, while at the same time possessing an immediacy and intimacy that are second to none. All of this great range and variety is represented in his works for the flute. Telemann wrote for the recorder as well as for the transverse flute that was more in favour in France, but the music was intended for either instrument. The greater part of that music - from solo fantasias and duets to concertos and double concertos - has been gathered in this boxed set, in highly praised recordings by two acclaimed Swedish recorder players: Clas Pehrsson and Dan Laurin. They are supported by continuo players in the chamber music, and by the eminent Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble in the concertos, and matched by soloists such as the acclaimed baroque bassoonist Michael McCraw, but there is never any doubt that the star of this collection is the recorder itself - and, of course, Telemann!

World première recordings: Violin Concerto (original version and fragments);

preliminary versions of [Allegretto] and Romance in F major; [Andante sostenuto] in E major; [Mazurka] and Impromptu for solo violin

The sixth volume in the BIS SIBELIUS EDITION focuses on the composer's music for violin and piano (and also includes the few works for solo violin). The violin was in fact the composer's way into music, and during his early youth his main ambition was to become a concert violinist. It is therefore not surprising that, throughout his life, he wrote a number of works for the instrument, including sonatas and suites as well as collections of shorter pieces and independent miniatures. More surprising is how little known Sibelius's music for violin is - with the shining exception of the violin concerto, of course.

Lovers of that particular work will be pleased to find it included in this set, too, performed with the piano part that the composer himself prepared for publication. (It is a fact that Sibelius made piano transcriptions of many major orchestral works, in which the piano writing is often virtuosic and is clearly designed to be effective in performance.) Sibelius's transcription of the definitive version is complemented here by the world première recording of a partially reconstructed version for violin and piano of the original 1903-04 score. This is only the second time the original version of the violin concerto has been recorded - the first recording being Leonidas Kavakos' and Lahti Symphony Orchestra's pioneering account of it on BIS-CD-500. On the present recording it is the Japanese violinist Madoka Sato (a 1995 prizewinner of the International Sibelius Violin Competition) who takes on the daunting task of performing the work with piano, with the formidable support of Sibelius expert Folke Gräsbeck.

Madoka Sato can also be heard in the other world première recordings included in this volume, while the remaining works are shared by two teams: Jaakko Kuusisto and Folke Gräsbeck concentrating on the youthful works, and Nils-Erik Sparf and Bengt Forsberg appearing mainly in the published pieces. Their performances were highly praised at the time of the release of the original discs, as shown by the following quotes: 'The soloists, violinist Kuusisto and pianist Gräsbeck, display consummate expertise as partners as well as in their individual expressions' (Classics and 'Sparf is highly sensitive and imaginative, and he and his accomplished partner make the most of the opportunities this repertoire provides'(Gramophone).

Sibelius's earliest music was instrumental and it wasn't until he was in his twenties that he turned to the solo song genre. From that time on, however, he wrote songs at regular intervals - more than a hundred in total. They form a substantial part of his output and are treasured highly by admirers of the composer, although only a handful have gained a regular place in the international repertoire. Undoubtedly his choice of predominantly Nordic poetry has contributed to this neglect - in his solo songs he turned overwhelmingly to poetry written in Swedish, his own first language. Given that it is his orchestral music which has earned Sibelius his greatest fame, it is natural that the songs as a whole give an incomplete picture of the composer's mastery. Nevertheless, as Andrew Barnett remarks in his informative liner notes, 'listening to them in their entirety reveals considerable lightness of touch and many a flash of genuine humour. The finest of them certainly reveal his gift for melody and his acute response to nature imagery, especially when setting poems featuring pantheistic imagery.' Many of the songs were written for or premièred by leading Finnish singers. Sibelius's own favourite was the soprano Ida Ekman; another distinguished early interpreter was Aino Ackté, the dedicatee of Luonnotar. It is a fine cast of Finnish singers who perform their compatriot's music on this collection, which also includes the highly acclaimed recordings by the Swedish mezzo Anne Sofie von Otter of some of the best-known songs, including Black Roses, The Diamond on the March Snow and But My Bird is Long in Homing. As for the accompaniments, the lion's share is in the hands of Folke Gräsbeck, an undisputed authority on Sibelius's piano scores and a key contributor to this edition.

World première recordings:
Svanevit: Preliminary sketch for No.9 & The Tempest: Canon from Suite No.1 (1927 version)

Other previously unissued recordings:
Kuolema: Valse triste & Scene with Cranes

Incidental music for the theatre is a genre in which Sibelius's outstanding abilities as a composer of large canvases for orchestra were combined with his equally well-honed talent for writing concise, sharply characterized portraits of characters or scenes. The present volume of the SIBELIUS EDITION focuses on the orchestral music that he wrote for plays and includes both the complete theatrical scores and the suites that the composer in several cases put together from these. Among the plays given the Sibelius treatment are works by famous as well as less familiar authors: from Shakespeare, Strindberg and Maeterlinck to the composer's brother-in-law Arvid Järnefelt. It was for a production of Järnefelt's drama Kuolema ('Death') that Sibelius in 1903 wrote one of his first scores for the theatre - a score which included a Tempo di valse lente that would soon make its triumphant course around the world under the title Valse triste. His last work in the genre was the music for Shakespeare's The Tempest, composed in 1925 shortly after the completion of Symphony No.7, a score that the liner notes, by Sibelius biographer Andrew Barnett, describes in the following terms: 'With its great variety of moods, seemingly endless thematic invention and sparkling orchestration, The Tempest represents the zenith of Sibelius's theatre music.'

After four previous releases, the SIBELIUS EDITION has won recognition among critics and lovers of Sibelius' music as, to quote the reviewer in American Record Guide, a set which 'constitutes the same kind of milestone as the Solti Ring cycle - a thing both unprecedented and, in its totality, unsurpassable. The rewards found on these discs will likely endure as long as recorded music itself.' As with earlier instalments, the present programme includes variant versions, a couple of them receiving their world première recordings. The performances are by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Neeme Järvi, with vocal soloists and choirs appearing when the scores so demands.

Image Sibelius Edition, Vol. 8: Orchestral Music (6CD-BO

Vad säger man? Sju timmar Sibelius - även denna relativt lilla del av hela Sibelius-editionen tar andan ur en. Närmare hundra procent strålande framföranden och upptagningar. Vilken kulturgärning.
(High Fidelity)

Includes previously unreleased recordings with Lahti SO under Osmo Vänskä of:
Karelia Suite, Op.11; Romance in C major for string orchestra, Op.42; March of the Finnish Jäger Battalion, Op.91a (1917, arr. 1918); Suite mignonne, Op.98a; Suite champêtre, Op.98b; Suite caractéristique, Op.100; Autrefois from Three Pieces for Orchestra, Op.96; Menuetto, JS127

Includes the following world première recordings:
Processional, Op.113 No.6 (1927, orch. 1938); Rakastava, Op.14 (1894/1911 Paris version); Tableaux 7/8 from Karelia, JS115, with simplified version of Tableau 7 (1893); Impromptu for string orchestra (1893 preliminary version)

Sibelius himself is reported to have said: 'I am a man of the orchestra. You must judge me from my orchestral works.' After the complete solo songs (Volume 7) and the works for violin and piano (Volume 6), the present instalment of the SIBELIUS EDITION returns us to the field in which the Finnish master has earned the greatest acclaim: that of orchestral music. As is demonstrated here, this ranges far beyond the famous symphonies and tone poems, however: apart from the perennially popular Violin Concerto, Sibelius wrote a number of suites, concert pieces, marches and scores for tableaux. Stylistically these works extend from the lightest of salon miniatures to heartfelt utterances of great profundity; their subjects range from the dance hall to the battlefield. From some of Sibelius's best-known works (the Violin Concerto in Leonidas Kavakos' award-winning recording; the Karelia Suite newly recorded by Osmo Vänskä) to rarities such as an early version of Rakastava never previously on disc, Volume 8 contributes seven hours worth of pieces to the fascinating puzzle that we know by the name of Jean Sibelius. Besides Kavakos, soloists include the violinists Dong-Suk Kang and Jaakko Kuusisto, Marko Ylönen (cello) and the baritone Raimo Laukka. The lion's share of the programme is performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä, with memorable appearances by Neeme Järvi conducting the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Image 6CD-BOX: Piano Music and Selected Songs
Released in 1995 - the centenary of Ernesto Lecuona's birth - the first instalment of Thomas Tirino's pioneering survey of the composer's piano music caused a sensation. All but forgotten (with notable exceptions such as Canto Siboney or Malagueña), these pieces exuded a charm and vitality which, combined with the highly idiomatic interpretations, enchanted audiences and critics alike and brought the disc onto Time Magazine's list of the 10 best discs of the year. First impressions were confirmed by the following discs, which also gave further proof of the painstaking editorial care taken by Tirino himself in his efforts to discover the composer's original thoughts beneath the encrustations of later arrangements. Fifty years after the death of Lecuona - often described as 'the Cuban Gershwin' - this box set provides a timely opportunity for a new generation to discover the qualities that made him a legend in his own time. For this purpose, Thomas Tirino's five-disc series is complemented by soprano Carole Farley's selection of some of her favourite Lecuona songs, including Always in My Heart (Siempre en mi corazón) and La comparsa - an album originally released in 2003, and described as 'a real gem of a disc!' in Gramophone, where it was named an 'Editor's Choice'.

Direction and harpsichord: Masaaki Suzuki

Widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of Bach's music today, Masaaki Suzuki has made his name both as the artistic director of the Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ) and as a performer on the harpsichord and the organ. Much interest has been focussed on the BCJ/Suzuki series of Bach Cantatas, begun in 1995 and reaching its final stretch with the recent release of Volume 46 (of a projected 55 discs). Hailed by the international music press, this monumental undertaking has acquired a world-wide following. From the very beginning of the collaboration with BIS, however, there have been numerous recording projects beyond the sacred cantatas of Johannes Sebastian, and, indeed, beyond Bach himself. Some of these acclaimed recordings can now be found in a limited edition boxed set, released in connection with the 20th anniversary of Bach Collegium Japan this year. Apart from Bach himself, the composers represented in the set are illustrious forerunners such as Monteverdi and the German quartet of Schütz, Buxtehude, Ahle and Kuhnau, Bach's contemporaries Vivaldi, Handel and Zelenka, and finally his own son, Carl Philipp Emmanuel. Works included are from a wide range of genres, including vocal music as well as instrumental, secular as well as sacred, scores involving large forces as well as solo works. The members of the Bach Collegium Japan are joined in their music-making by a number of distinguished soloists, and there is also an opportunity to sample the harpsichord-playing of Masaaki Suzuki in his acclaimed recording of the Goldberg Variations. The eminently price-worthy set consists of eleven previously released titles, accompanied by the original booklets and full information. It also includes 'A Choral Year with J.S. Bach', a newly made compilation of Masaaki Suzuki's personal selection from famous movements in Bach's cantatas, ordered according to the Lutheran Church Calendar from Advent to Reformation Day.

Gathered here, the three discs with Felix Mendelssohn's symphonies recorded in 2007 and 2008 by Andrew Litton and his Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra were warmly received by the reviewers when they were first released. While each instalment, according to the BBC Music Magazine, demonstrated 'the same wide dynamic range, eloquent phrasing and attention to detail, always with an ear for its contribution to the bigger picture', performances of individual symphonies were hailed as 'an exhilarating, thoroughly enjoyable Italian, superbly played and recorded' (No. 4, Gramophone), 'finally a Scottish that I have been able to listen to repeatedly with sheer delight' (No. 3,, 'suitably glowing, with an ideal balance between orchestral sound and chorus' (No. 2 Lobgesang, Financial Times), and as bringing out 'all of the rugged Beethovenian character in the Reformation symphony' (No. 5, MusicWeb International). But this box set also gives the background to the symphonies for full orchestra, through the inclusion of the composer's 12 string symphonies (and an incomplete 13th), written by a boy not yet fifteen. While forming a striking proof of Mendelssohn's enormous, and enormously precocious talent, these works also allow us to discover the influences absorbed by the young man, who only one year later would compose his Symphony No. 1. The recordings, with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta conducted by Lev Markiz, were described in Fanfare as 'absolutely lovely' with 'an exuberance that seems as fresh as that of the youthful composer himself'. And as if all this wasn't enough, a further four discs offer all of the eight concertos that Mendelssohn composed. These include the youthful works with string orchestra accompaniment (concertos for violin, for piano, for violin and piano, and for two pianos), as well as the mature works for violin and for piano and full orchestra, performed here by Isabelle van Keulen 'with a soft tone like the finest-spun silk - plus strength to match, when required' (Gramophone), and Ronald Brautigam, in what has been described as 'one of the great piano recordings' (In Tune).

Sonaterne er komponeret over tre årtier.

Image Anthology Of Classical Guitar Music (40 CD)
Guitar lovers are lucky enough to have their pick of repertoire, spanning the entire globe as well as many centuries. Never before, however, have they been able to listen to their favourite pieces all in one place – from Baroque to 20th Century, from Latin America to north Germany. This ambitious and expansive set of 40 CDs brings together a wide range of works for solo guitar guaranteed to satisfy those eager to explore repertoire both known and unknown. We start our journey with Robert de Visée, born around 30 years before J.S. Bach. His Suites – which may also have been played on a lute or theorbo – are fascinating examples of some of the only existing French Baroque music for guitar. Bach himself did not write as much music for the stringed instrument as he did for keyboard; however, the transcriptions of his violin Partitas work perfectly on the guitar. Likewise, Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti have been transcribed here from the keyboard for the guitar. The Italian composer worked in Spain for the majority of his life, and the Spanish influences he picked up there make a smooth transition to the stringed instrument. The Classical and Romantic eras saw a period of development. Fernando Sor, one of the most important figures in guitar music, elevated the guitar from a 'tavern' instrument to one that commanded respect. He himself contributed a vast amount to the guitar canon – such as his Études – alongside the Italians Ferdinando Carulli and Luigi Rinaldo Legnani and Sor's pupil, Napoléon Coste, who became the leading guitarist in his native France. Sor's 20th-century successor is arguably Francisco Tárrega, considered the father of the guitar. His technical innovations helped to raise the profile of the guitar as a solo instrument, as he successfully persuaded Antonio de Torres Jurado to construct a large instrument suitable for use in concert halls. The Spaniards dominated this period – alongside Tárrega were Isaac Albéniz (who never actually wrote specifically for the guitar, but whose music has been arranged a number of times), Joaquín Turina, Joaquín Rodrigo and Manuel de Falla. Rodrigo's homage to Falla – the Invocación y danza – shows the composer's recognition of Falla as one of the greatest influences on Spanish composers working in the latter half of the 20th century. Next, we travel across the Atlantic to investigate one of the most important locations for the creation of guitar music: Latin America. Composers working here took particular inspiration from indigenous influences, including the Paraguyan Agustín Barrios Mangoré and the Argentinian Ástor Piazzolla. Manuel Ponce, a leading Mexican composer, wrote his famous Estrellita, which soon became a beloved Mexican folk song. It is present here in a sparkling arrangement for solo guitar. The 20th century saw the expansion of the guitar across the globe. The repertoire grew widely, thanks to composers from such diverse places as Russia, Poland and the Netherlands. German composer Hans Werner Henze wrote his original Royal Winter Music, based on Shakespearean characters, in the late 1970s. Jewish composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, born in Italy, spent much of his career in Hollywood, after fleeing the Nazi threat in Europe in 1939. He still wrote much classical music alongside his works for the big screen, including his well known Les Guitares bien tempérées. Dutch composer Henk Badings was discredited after the war for having cooperated with the Nazis. A recent renewed interest in his music has resulted in this recording of his Twelve Preludes for solo guitar – a world premiere for Brilliant Classics, first released in 2012. This set features performers of international quality. Among them are: the Paganini expert Luigi Attademo; Cristiano Porqueddu, who will be performing in New York's Carnegie Hall in July 2017; Frédéric Zigante; Giulio Tampalini; and many more besides. There are numerous world premiere recordings, of works both modern and older, thanks to recent rediscoveries. The guitars used range from carefully crafted modern instruments to period instruments, including the 'Sabionari' guitar by Antonio Stradivari. The release will be sure to satisfy both guitar aficionados and those looking to dip in and out of a diverse mixture of guitar music from around the globe. The most extensive guitar collection available! This 40 CD set spans several centuries of guitar music: from the Baroque where the guitar gained preference over its ancestor the Lute, to the Classical Period in which the instrument was emancipated and gained its rightful place as a serious concert instrument, through Spain, its country of origin, right into the 20th century where famous composers extended its sonic possibilities to the very borders of the spectrum. A treasure trove of unprecedented scope and substance, for both connoisseur and music lover, performed by world class guitarists! Recorded between 1996 and 2015. Contains liner notes written by Philip Borg-Wheeler specially for this release. The booklet presents the necessary background to the music, putting each composer in his historic perspective.
