Image Serenade in D
Johann Michael Haydn never quite reached the fame of his older brother Joseph, but still introduced an impressive oeuvre into the classical repertoire. J. M. Haydn’s Serenade in D was composed in Salzburg in 1767. The ten movement work displays Haydn’s affinity for chamber compositions. Founded in 1986, the Virtuosi Saxoniae is made up of principal members of the Dresden Staatskapelle. The ensemble concerns itself with 18th century European music, devoting themselves to the great figures of the Hasse era.

René Jacobs and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin cooperate since decades successfully. Nowadays you can only imagine Jacobs as the orchestra director of the ensemble. The Telemann production was released in 1989, which was undoubtedly a year of radical changes. In this recording, René Jacobsis the countertenor, being accompanied by the members of the Akademie für Alte Musik in a chamber music arrangement - without director. The cooperation between René Jacobs and the Berlin-based orchestra, which led to a number of award-winning releases, began with the Telemann recording at hand. In the meantime, both were awarded with the Telemann prize of the city of Magdeburg. The Akademie für Alte Musik received the prize in 2006, René Jacobs in 2008.

RE-MASTERED

In occasion of Burkhard Glaetzner's sixty-fifth birthday, we are re-publishing the complete recording of all oboe sonatas by Antonio Vivaldi. Glaetzner is one of the most renowned virtuosic to play this instrument: he was professor at the Universities in Leipzig and Berlin, is a specialist for New Music, and called to life and directed many different ensembles. This recording of the Vivaldi sonatas with Christine Schornsheim playing the continuo is from 1986. The timely distance of the recording is not noticeable. The recording has a stylistic competence. The CD also contains the first recording of the sonata for violin, oboe, the obligate organ and bassoon, RV 779.

RE-MASTERED

This CD is a double remembrance: In 2009, both German baritone Hermann Prey and Australian pianist Geoffrey Parsons would have celebrated their 80th birthday. Both died in the 1990's at the age of 69, respectively 66. Their recording of German popular ballads with adaptations by Johannes Brahms and the participation of soprano singer Pamela Coburn is from 1987. It shows an enormous mastership: Hermann Prey's silky timbre matches perfectly with Brahm's muted colors. His precise articulation and the adequately simple arrangement show the beauty of these Lied adaptations. Geoffrey Parsons was renowned for being one of the best Lieder pianists of his generation. His gift was his ability to play difficult passages in a natural way and nonchalant way.

In Liszt's two Piano Concertos we see his both spheres united: the revolutionary new techniques of playing that Liszt had wrestled from the piano during his years as a virtuoso and the orchestra works written on the basis of poetic ideas. His „Fantasies for piano and orchestra" - these paraphrase's to other works - the composer rather aimed at brilliance and virtuosity here. Not often performed this 3CD-Set includes all Fantasies for piano and orchestra as well than the popular two piano concertos.

The Scherzi melodichi of 1734 contain seven suites named after the days of the week. The programmatic idea, which is stated on the cover sheet and in the foreword, is to provide music for every-day to entertain the visitors of Bad Pyrmont (in today's Lower Saxony), back then one of Europe's most popular spas. The structure of the Fortsetzung des Harmonischen Gottesdienstes (1731/32) also follows a calendrical principle. The young Ensemble DELIRIO put a programme together, which features each day of the week in at least one of the compositions. The selection of the pieces is based on two cycles by Georg Philipp Telemann.

RE-MASTERED

Happy Birthday! In 2009, the Lautten Compagney celebrates its 25th birthday. And this is the right moment to re-release this recording of 1993. Wolfgang Katschner, artistic director of the ensemble, and Hans-Werner Apel already performed during the recording. But also, the young Hille Perl - nowadays a renowned viola player - was a member of the Lautten Compagneyand took part in the recording. The CD contains German Lieder and instrumental pieces by Orlando di Lasso, original from Mons in Flanders, who became Bavarian court composer. It was Lasso's aim to combine the "mellifluous Italianity" to the "stalwart Germanity and thus elevate the German Lied to a "daintier and nobler state". The vocal solists on this CD are Mona Spägele, Bernhard Landauer, Wilfried Jochens and Thomas Herberich. Many of the works are though performed by the Lautten Compagney as mere instrumental pieces in order to reflect the historical practice of the time.

RE-MASTERED

This re-release is an interesting document of how West and East Germany nurtured Bach's works in the eighties of the 20th century. DDR-citizen Siegfried Lorenz only had small chances for traveling, and was not able to make an international career. In the other side, Edita Gruberova fled from Czechoslovakia to become a world-famous star. Being predestined for a romantic role in many operas, she also recorded two highly virtuosic Bach cantatas. Siegfried Lorenz did the same in Eastern Berlin, being a member of Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where he also excelled with a modern repertoire. The German Bach solisten (West) and the Neue Bachische Collegium Musicum (East) both play on modern instruments. While Helmut Winschermann directs in the manner of the - for the fifties - renowned Stuttgart Camber Orchestra, the interpretation of the 16 years younger Max Pommer already shows the altercation with historical arrangement practices.

ALFRED SCHNITTKE's work as a soundtrack composer - this fact is known to everyone acquainted with Schnittke's oeuvre. Nevertheless, not many have knowledge of the fact that between 1961 and 1984 he composed as many as 60 soundtracks. His polystilistic arrangements were perfectly suited for movies. Schnittke was, as well as many of his colleagues, bound to Sovjet Union's artistic restraints, which made rehearsing a difficult matter; though, much of his substistence came from this job in the film industry. Composing soundtracks was for Schnittke the means of expression of his artistic views, and thus he can be named in a line with Shostakowitch, Prokofiev and Chatchaturian. Since many years Schmittke's Widow Irina, publisher Hans Sikorski and director and soundtrack expert Frank Strobel devote themselves to the composer's hand-written scores. A great number of these have already been gathered and taken from Moscow archives to Germany. Schnittke was desirous of giving life to his compositions in a concert hall. With Frank Strobel it was possible to meet Schmittkes desire; a number of concert suites have already been collected and arranged for this purpose. The present SACD is the fourth album out of a series of soundtracks by Schnittke to be released by Capriccio.

RE-MASTERED

St. Marcus Dome in Venice is predestined for multichoral music. Giovanni Gabrieli composed his canzonas and symphoniae sacrae for this location. In the second half of the 16th century, San Marco in Venice received its own fixed brass ensemble. The three brothers Della Casa from Udine, who played Cornett or trombone according to the occasion, were the core of this group. Later, the cornettist Giovanni Bassano joined the ensemble. During the 1960ies, the first recordings were published by members of modern symphony orchestras. The recording at hand by "hr brass" was probably the first experiment of performing with modern instruments, while exercising the music in a historically coherent way. This is noticeable by the usage of a continuous organ positive.

The Biblical Songs op.99 were written in 1894 during Antonin Dvorák's time in America (1892-95), when he was working as artistic director and professor of composition at the New York Conservatory of Music. His 9th Symphony, appositely termed 'From the New World' was to be followed by a further symphony, but Dvorák opted for treating the Biblical Songs, which, in their austerity hardly allow scope for American scent but are rather reminiscent of the composer's Czech homeland, if of anything concrete at all.

The fact that the composer so intensively studied the psalms of the Old Testament was not least connected to external circumstances, e.g. to the economic crisis of 1893, which also affected the New York Conservatory. He was also suffering from the death of Hans von Bülow, was grieving for Gounod and Tchaikovsky and, in addition, he learnt about the grave sickness of his father, who died two days after the Biblical Songs had been completed.

Dvorák, the Catholic, had long demonstrated his faith with numerous works of fervent piety: Stabat Mater (1876), Requiem (1890), the Mass in D major as well as the pieces for solo voice and organ, such as the works that can be heard on this CD - Ave Maria, Ave Maris Stella and Hymnus ad laudes in festo Sanctae Trinitatis (1877-79) as well as the preludes and fugues for organ of 1859 by the then 18-year-old.

Despite being born 21 years apart, both composers succeeded in incorporating a similarly profound sense of local folk traditions into their exquisitely elegant music,

creating works that have since become an integral part of Basque culture. Born in San Sebastián in the Basque region of Spain, soprano Arantza Ezenarro here presents songs that evoke vibrant images of her homeland.

This project is based on Israel in Egypt, one of the best-known and most popular oratorios by Georg Friedrich Handel, and has been created on the basis of the common history and roots of three religions; Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Musicians from the (Western) European Baroque tradition (Baroque orchestra and choir), and hence from a Christian background, are joined by musicians from Jewish and Muslim backgrounds. The basic musical form of Handel's oratorio and its narrative structure remains untouched, for the most parts.

ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra / Cornelius Meister

The composition of his Ninth Symphony proved a struggle for Anton Bruckner. Having begun work on it in the late summer of 1887, it remained unfinished by the time of his death nine years later. The movements that he did complete have a more 'stand-alone' quality than in other symphonies - perhaps as a direct consequence of there being no finale to round off the arching structure and bring the work's dramatic development to a conclusion. Bruckner intended to dedicate the Ninth to "my dear God", and his Mass in F minor is also a work of gratitude to God for his recovery following a period of sustained nervous exhaustion. Performed several times during Bruckner's lifetime, the Mass in F minor has always ranked ahead of its sister works, those in D minor and E minor, securing a place for itself among the most popular, late Romantic sacred choral works.
