Image Violin Concerto & Symphony No. 5
After the mystical 'Hebrides' Overture and the masterly ‘Reformation’ Symphony, Mendelssohn embarked on his second violin concerto. After a long gestation in which he polished the orchestration and meticulously revised the solo part, the work was finally premiered in Leipzig in 1845. From David to Joachim, virtuosos honed the violin part with the composer over successive revivals, leaving to posterity traces of their playing style: fingering, bowing and score markings. This precious heritage has been scrutinised by Isabelle, as she did for her Brahms Violin Concerto recording, as a previously unexploited expressive resource. Isabelle Faust, accompanied by the Freiburger Barockorchester, in top form, under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado, offers us a miracle of purity and lyricism in a freshly-minted interpretation that fulfils Mendelssohn’s promise of ‘a concerto to make the angels rejoice in heaven’!

Image Piano Sonatas

In this first volume of a complete cycle of the Prokofiev sonatas, his compatriot Alexander Melnikov reveals three emblematic works. The brilliant Second Sonata dates from 1912, when its composer was still a student at the St Petersburg Conservatory; with the Sixth (1939) and Eighth (1944) we meet the master in his full maturity, plunged in the darkest years of the Great Terror and the war. Echoes of his music for the theatre, lyricism and violence mingle amid ultra-virtuoso pianism.

Image Ascendit Deus
The Feast of the Ascension, celebrated on the 40th day of Easter, is one of the chief feasts of the Christian year, in which the resurrected Jesus was taken up to Heaven in the presence of eleven of his disciples. The Feast of Pentecost, which falls ten days after Ascension seven Sundays (50 days, hence the name) after Easter Sunday commemorates in the Christian church the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Both feasts are rich in imagery and in musical material. Many of the Ascensiontide works in this programme set all or parts of psalm 47, whose fifth verse begins God is gone up with a merry noise . 'Ascendit Deus' is a five-part setting of that verse in Latin by the English Renaissance composer Peter Philips, which leads to a triple-time Alleluia . Ralph Vaughan Williams s 'O clap your hands', dating from 1920, sets the opening verses of the psalm, performed here in the composer s expanded version for choir, organ, brass and percussion.

Named after Dmitri Shostakovich, the Dmitri Ensemble is based around the central core of a string ensemble, with a special commitment to presenting both unjustly neglected and newly-penned works with an innovative approach to engaging concert programming.

Image Montage
There is a misconception in the classical-music world that composers who spend most of their time writing film music long ago sacrificed whatever individual voices they may once have had. This album conveniently and unequivocally demonstrates otherwise. The six contemporary composers represented in Montage are among today s most sought-after creators of film music: collectively, they have amassed 72 Oscar® nominations and eight wins! They have repeatedly demonstrated their skill at creating mood and propelling action for a mass audience.

Kristian Bezuidenhout, fortepiano

"Kristian Bezuidenhout plays Mozart on the fortepiano like no-one else. ...He performs ... with all the sensitivity, expressivity, flair and stylistic integrity that has marked him out as a supreme master of the early keyboard. ...the tone is vibrant, the music thoroughly engaging, and the genius of Mozart is brilliantly and eloquently served." ? THE SCOTSMAN (UK) (Review of Volume 3)"Bezuidenhout is a prince of the fortepiano, making it sing in melodic phrases as no other practitioner of this intractable instrument has done in my experience." ? THE TIMES (UK) (Review of Volume 2)

Image La Descente d'Orphée aux Enfers
Until Charpentier, the myth of Orpheus had never provided the subject matter for an opera in French. He repaired the omission with this fascinating little gem on the margins of the large-scale tragédie lyrique. Charpentier offers us here a myth left in suspension, without a resolution, a carefree and happy ‘descent’ that consecrates Orpheus’ song and the enchanting power of music. A poetic experience amid the depths of night, which inspire Sébastien Daucé and his Ensemble Correspondances more than ever!
