– Sigurd Barrett

Image DJANGOLOGY VOL 1
A unique interplay of instruments, a sweet blending of violin and guitar and a buoyantly optimistic incisiveness of rhythm made the Quintet of the Hot Club de France a special jazz niche whose appeal seems never to have diminished. Contrasts in the attitudes of the main protagonists: the wild, volatile, extravagant, semi-illiterate unpredictability of “star turn” Django counterbalancing the urbane, smartly ambitious, refined yet accessible Grappelli. Their ongoing love-hate relationship - as complementary as yin and yang - must account in some measure for the undying magic, but a mutual striving towards musical excellence and the self-confidence born of hard-earned technical proficiency also audibly played their part.

Image NIGHT & DAY
No performer ever made dancing look easier, or worked harder at it. Suave, elegant, sophisticated, dapper ...to generations, Fred Astaire was "Mr. Smooth". He was also a fine dramatic actor, and the songs he introduced unfailingly became standards.

Fred also recorded three of the songs from The Gay Divorce, duplicating Night and Day on a disc made specially for English Columbia. And for those who may have noticed our listing "HMV" as the original issue for the Reisman Night and Day recording, this is an alternate take (#3) which appeared only in England and is slightly different from the version issued b y Victor in North America.

"Progressive jazz or bop was a new version of old things, a theory of chords and so on…Bird was responsible for the actual playing of it and Dizzy put it down… Bird would play (he was so spontaneous)… But Diz would sit there, and whatever he played, he knew just what he was doing. It was a pattern, a thing that had been studied" – Billy Eckstine

A colossus among jazz innovators and, with his rough, pugnacious manner and irrepressible (often self-debunking) sense of humour one of its most colourful characters, bandleader, composer, would-be conga-drummer, vocalist and pianist-arranger, Dizzy Gillespie was – after Louis Armstrong – the single most influential trumpeter in jazz history. Alongside Charlie Parker a prime mover in the emergence of bop, he became its most ‘far out’ exponent, conferring upon the revolutionary new form (via a mesmerising combination of showmanship and organisational skill) a veneer of respectability in the eyes of the trad purists.

Image SINATRA - EARLY YEARS 1
Frank Sinatra led a public life which was chronicled by marriages, divorces, love affairs, brawls, his son’s kidnapping, the Rat Pack, and his friendships with both mobsters and presidents. But with over 1,600 recordings and scores of films and personal appearances, he is one of the most famous entertainers of the 20th century.

Image INTERLUDE - VOL 1
Like Ella before her, Sarah Vaughan 'The Divine One' was an unknown amateur when she won a Harlem competition and, like Ella, arguments raged as to whether or not she really was a jazz singer. The purists complained that, although her rhythmic pulse and musicianship (she was an accomplished pianist) were never in doubt, her controlled approach to singing “as if she were an instrument” lacked the spontaneity of Fitzgerald and Holiday.

“To have experienced 52nd Street between 1945 and 1949 was like reading a textbook to he future of music. You had Coleman Hawkins and Hank Jones at one club. You had Art Tatum, Tiny Grimes, Red Allen, Dizzy, Bird, Bud Powell, Monk, all down there on that street” (not to mention) “Erroll Garner, Sid Bechet, Oran Hot Lips Page, Earl Bostic” – every night … Miles Davis (Autobiography)

Generally regarded as the single most innovative player of modern jazz, Miles Davis arrived on the scene as it were at the right moment. With Dizzy Gillespie (b.1917) as his mentor and early role-model and peers that included Charlie Parker (1920-1955), John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk, he swiftly became the elemental force in the jazz revolution of the 1940s. The “patriarch of progressive”, a self-styled, impenitent modernist impatient with accepted forms, he was forever blazing new trails. The quintessential “chameleon of cool” and “an hypnotic improviser”, he was simultaneously both a popular and controversial figure. As influential in his day as Ellington had been in the previous generation, his music linked “the swing era to the hip-hop and rap world.”
