The fourth volume in the Haydn2032 project is released in a collector’s edition at the same time as the CD: an double LP album on high-quality vinyl (180 grams) containing the complete musical programme plus a forty-page booklet with a series of photos by Richard Kalvar of the Magnum Photos agency (born in New York in 1944), the full sleeve notes, the sung text of Il maestro di cappella and a previously unpublished text entitled The Prince and the Pyramids by the Swiss writer Alain Claude Sulzer, who won the French Prix Medicis étranger in 2008 for his novel A Perfect Waiter.

After the huge success of her first album for Alpha, Crazy Girl Crazy (Alpha 293), which received a Grammy Award, a JUNO Classical Award in Canada, the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, FFFF in Télérama and DIAMANT in Opéra Magazine and was BBC Music Magazine CD of the Month, Barbara Hannigan is back with her long-time collaborator, the Dutch pianist and great interpreter of twentieth-century music Reinbert de Leeuw, for a recital exploring the roots of modern music, with the composers who left their mark on the turn of the twentieth century: Hugo Wolf (Mignon Lieder), Arnold Schoenberg (Vier Lieder op.2), Anton Webern (Fünf Lieder nach Gedichten von R. Dehmel), Alexander Zemlinsky (selected lieder), Alma Mahler (Die stille Nacht etc.) and Alban Berg (Sieben frühe Lieder). From what has been called the Second Viennese School, an incredible mix of musicians, painters, writers and other artists frequenting salons and cafés, a completely new musical language was born. Barbara Hannigan is especially fond of this repertory and has long championed it. Of course, we think of Berg and his unforgettable Lulu: ‘The artist who sings’, as journalists often like to describe her, embodies this music with her legendary dramatic sense, making each of these lieder a story in itself, even a mini-opera . . .

As one of the house artists of Brilliant Classics, having an association with the label which stretches back over two decades and countless recordings, Pieter-Jan Belder has the luxury here of presenting his third recording of the apex of Baroque keyboard music, the endlessly absorbing Goldberg Variations. It also marks the start of a project to record the entire harpsichord oeuvre of J.S. Bach, mixing older recordings with new ones such as this. ‘I always dream that I can do better,’ says Belder. ‘I suppose this dream will never end because there will always be something to be improved. I promise though, this will be my last recording of the piece!’ Belder is not short of critical acclaim for previous Bach recordings, many of which are contained within the present incarnation of the label’s complete Bach box (BC94940). According to one reviewer of his previous recording (on BC92284) he is ‘an apostle of mainstream common sense and sanity in Bach interpretation… playing intelligibly and expressively so consistently and so well, alternating sorrowful intensity, tenderness, wit and virtuoso dash as required.’ Belder also contributes his own, lively but scholarly booklet note. Although the old story of Bach composing these variations for Count Kaiserling and his young music-servant Goldberg has often been dismissed as apocryphal, Belder gives it credence. He also points out how the cycle of variations was designed by the composer as the apex of his output for the instrument, with as much educational as expressive purpose. Most recently he has released eight CDs dedicated to the works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. He is also working on a complete recording of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, a double album with ostinato compositions of various composers and C.P.E. Bach's Violin Sonatas with violinist Rie Kimura. Bach’s Goldberg Variations are the touching stone of a musician’s stature, and no wonder that award-winning Dutch harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder considers it a necessary and rewarding task to record it again (having recorded it already 15 years ago), his immense experience and increased knowledge finding new hidden secrets and treasures in this iconic work. The personal booklet notes by Pieter-Jan Belder show his great insight, knowledge and love for this work, which has been on his music stand for over 30 years. Kent Nagano and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra first became acquainted in 1993, when they worked together on Mahler's Third Symphony. Love was immediate and Kent Nagano conducted the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra regularly over the next decades.

When Kent Nagano was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor starting in the autumn of 2013, one of the ideas turned into a project: performing and recording major orchestral works of Richard Strauss in connection with the composer’s 150th anniversary in 2014. Having worked for a long time as Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, Kent Nagano has unique insights into Strauss’s music and the Strauss tradition, and can draw on infor- mation from authentic sources within the Strauss family.

What is perhaps less known is that the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra also has a solid Richard Strauss tradition. The orchestra already performed “Don Juan” in its inaugural season 1905-1906; it has been played more than 50 times since then. Under Wilhelm Stenhammar, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra played “Macbeth” (1908) and “Tod und Verklärung” (1913), as well as the overture to “Guntram” and “Till Eulenspiegel” (1913). After Stenhammar’s period as Principal Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, several of his later successors championed the music of Richard Strauss: Sergiu Comissiona (“Don Quixote”), Sixten Ehrling (“Ein Heldenleben”) and Charles Dutoit (“Don Juan”). Neeme Järvi and Gustavo Dudamel had a particular affinity with “Don Juan”, and Dudamel also conducted “Ein Heldenleben”.

“Eine Alpensinfonie", the last of Strauss’s large orchestral pieces, entered the orchestra's repertoire with Otmar Suitner in 1975, and since then has been one of the most popular pieces with both the orchestra and its audience. Neeme Järvi took it to the UK and Estonia (1999) and Gustavo Dudamel conducted it five times in Sweden (2007).

The orchestra was thus technically and musically familiar with the splendid score when performances were scheduled with Kent Nagano in 2014, including this recording.

For these performances and recording a new approach was taken. Conductor and orchestra wished to express not the bombastic aspects, but the subtle emotional changes, the colours and nuances of the vast and impressive landscape and the wanderer’s instinctive reaction to it, which is also expressed in the enormous orchestral apparatus. This was made possible only by the long and searching work orchestra and conductor carried out together over the years, which made possible new shades and depths in the re-creation of this magnificent piece of art.

But that's a mistake, because there's an extraordinary density of music in the Inventions and Sinfonias.'

It is with children in mind that I recorded these French Suites, always having heartfelt simplicity and purity in their mind. Children see the world with hope, optimism, and cast in light – much like Miró sees the world. I find a childlike purity in him, similar to what I hear in the French Suites. There is a quote by Miró that touches me enormously and makes me think a lot whenever I play, as it reflects something that may be the most difficult aspect of musical interpretation – and of art in general: „To gain freedom is to gain simplicity.“ -- Zhu Xiao-Mei. The 24 preludes for cello solo by Mieczyslaw Weinberg have a particular history. Composed in the late sixties for Mstislav Rostropovich, he never actually played them. Their musical language is aphoristic, often brutal, provocative in its inner conflict. It contains many different gestures and is very intense. To perform these preludes might have been problematic in the Soviet Union back then. Gidon Kremer has adapted the Preludes for solo violin and this is the world premiere recording of his adaptation. In his concerts, Kremer often plays them to projections of works by the Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus in the background. Recorded at Paliesiaus Dvaras, Lithuania December 2017

Haydn2032, the ambitious project of recording the complete symphonies of Haydn, has been placed from the start under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, with two ensembles, Il Giardino Armonico, which made the first four volumes, and the Kammerochester Basel, to which this fifth volume and the next two are assigned. Another characteristic of the edition is that each time Haydn is set in perspective with another composer; here it is Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-92): ‘Kraus was the first man of genius that I met. Why did he have to die? It is an irreparable loss for our art. The Symphony in C minor he wrote in Vienna specially for me is a work which will be considered a masterpiece in every century’, said Haydn in 1797. Though he long remained forgotten after his death, Kraus made an active contribution to the movement of poetic renewal called ‘Sturm und Drang’ or ‘Geniezeit’ (time of genius) because such artists as the young Goethe broke free of all tradition to follow their hearts alone. When Haydn called Kraus homme de genie, in French, he probably had this context in mind. The two composers had met in Vienna in 1783.

The year 2017 was a vintage one for Giovanni Antonini: he was awarded an Echo Klassik, two Gramophone Awards and a Diapason d’Or of the Year for his recent releases. Two of these prizes distinguished ‘Il Distratto’, volume 4 of the complete recording of the Haydn symphonies on which he embarked for Alpha in 2014. For the sixth volume, released in 2018, the Milanese conductor is again joined by the Kammerorchester Basel, which shares the project with Il Giardino Armonico and which he knows very well, since he conducts it regularly and they have made many recordings together, including volume 5 of the Haydn series. This volume focuses on symphonies with a ‘sacred’ inspiration: the Symphony no.26, ‘Lamentatione’, was composed in 1768 for Holy Week, and no.30 was nicknamed ‘Alleluja’ after the plainchant melody Haydn uses in it.

It’s a logbook, the one I’ve never really kept. My years of blues/rock and early music mingle here; the thousands of kilometres travelled with that theorbo of mine, the cities and the countryside, the railways, the skies, the scents, the lights; but above all, the music of the people. Partite variate sopra quest’aria francese detta l’alemana is a tablature by Piccinini of an aria also called La Monica. In North America in the late nineteenth century, railroad hoboes carved their vagabond pseudonym along the tracks, which they called their ‘moniker’ . . . Corrente VI sopra l’alemana, by the same composer, is the energetic counterpart to the noble and meditative allemande. Like a Belfry is taken from a dream... Rosemary Standley has set her words to the melody and sings them. J. H. Kapsberger’s Toccata nona is associated here with Perivoli Blue. Perivoli is a village in the south of the island of Corfu. Thanks Toumani expresses my fascination with Mandingo music. Bellerofonte Castaldi’s Arpeggiata a mio modo was one of my first challenges on the theorbo. Erik Satie’s Gnossienne no.1 arrived under my fingers without warning and made a place for itself here by fitting in so naturally that I couldn’t say no to it. This is the piece chosen by my photographer friend Richard Dumas (who did the booklet cover and portrait) to make the video clip of the album. With Kapsberger’s Bergamasca, a dance from Bergamo in Italy, the theorbo becomes a festive and agile instrument. Dans la chambre de mon theorbe. Over a passacaglia by J. H. Kapsberger, we hear the actor and author Jean-Luc Debattice reading a poem he dedicated to me. A Tea with Bach is an arrangement of the Minuet from Bach’s Cello Suite no.1. The Toccata Undicesima serves as the introduction to an improvisation: Vos luths. And invokes India. (from the article Carnet de route by Bruno Helstroffer)

‘The memories of my childhood in Argentina always bring me back to the singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat, synonymous with shared family moments . . . Serrat’s poetry and music around a barbecue in Argentina; “De vez en cuando la vida” made me cry as it has made millions of people cry in Latin America, Spain and elsewhere . . . Joan Manuel Serrat is part of our life, he is our Jacques Brel! . . . Or, if we project ourselves back to the sixteenth century, he is in a sense our little Camerata Fiorentina, that movement of Italian poets and musicians in Florence. Serrat has allowed the whole of Latin America and Spain to reappropriate the works of its poets . . . He has also been synonymous with freedom and the struggle against dictatorial regimes. ‘His song “Mediterraneo” is one of the emblematic pieces of his career. It is almost a hymn that has special resonance nowadays: “I was born in the Mediterranean”! ‘I asked my good friend Quito Gato to arrange these songs for our ensemble, Cappella Mediterranea. The orchestration retains typical seventeenth-century instruments: recorders, cornett, violins, viola da gamba, cellos, lutes, harp, harpsichord, organ, with some percussion and a double bass. ‘These period instruments allow us to travel back in time and compare Serrat’s romances with the Ensaladas of Mateo Flecha (1481-1553) – La Bomba – or a piece by Francesco Valls, a Catalan who is now forgotten yet was one of the greatest composers of seventeenth-century Spain, the polyphony of Guillaume Dufay, a composition by Juan Cabanilles that recalls a Bach Passion. The Xacaras, a satirical genre from the Spanish Golden Age (Francisco Gomez de Quevedo, Pedro Calderon de la Barca) dialogues with Serrat’s works. Under the title Gli impresari, The Impresarios – i.e. the directors of the theatre troupes that Nikolaus I, Prince Esterházy engaged to perform in his opera houses – this CD gathers together some of the orchestral works by Joseph Haydn linked by their origin and their reception; they were originally conceived as theatre music, before their metamorphosis into symphonies (…)The period from 1772 onwards, when Karl Wahr was responsible for for the summer theatre programme at Esterháza, saw the peak of the multidisciplinary collaboration taking place betweenthe court music directed by Haydn and companies engaged from outside. (…) At the end of 1775 and the beginning of 1776, while Joseph Haydn was occupied in transforming his music for Collé’s comedy into a symphony for concert performance, Karl Wahr was enjoying enormous success with his theatrical entertainments in the ballroom at the theatre in Salzburg. It was there, on 3 January 1776, that Thamos, King of Egypt was staged, a heroic drama whose choruses, musicologists now believe, were composed by none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; for this Salzburg performance he also composed four instrumental entractes (recorded for this disc) as well as a melodrama and a Don Giovanni-esque descent into hell. This new release presents Carl Orff’s masterwork opera in a benchmark recording that will set a new standard of sound quality and interpretation. “Die Kluge,” composed in 1943, is written in the style of a fairy tale with the moral of a fable, and tells the story of a king, a peasant, and a clever girl. Dmitry Shostakovich holds a place among the most important composers of the 20th century, and his Fifth Symphony is a symphonic masterpiece, which helped him secure that position. Kurt Sanderling’s interpretation with the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester was louded by the composer himself. He was the first conductor to conduct Shostakovich’s music following the ostracism of 1948. Sanderling’s wife Barbara, a double bassist with the BSO, stated that her husband had “developed an unbelievable understanding of this music. It was providential that Shostakovich expressly confirmed what Kurt Sanderling had read into the music.”

The existing recordings of Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in A minor op. 3/8 and Bach’s Concerto for two violins in D minor BWV 1043 came into being in April 1957 at Leipzig’s Kongresshalle. Since their joint debut in 1947, the Bach Double Concerto was the central work in the joint repertoire of David and Igor Oistrakh, which they performed in numerous concerts before David’s death in 1974. The then Eterna boss Dieter-Gerhardt Worm reminisces: “David Oistrakh was a very kind and approachable person. You can hear this in his recordings. His playing is so unbelievably accomplished yet nevertheless so humanly accessible. He was seized with the ambition to be at least as good as Menuhin, whose Bachian style he greatly admired. During the recording of the Bach Violin Sonatas in Dresden’s Lukaskirche, he constantly disappeared from the studio with his little tape recorder in order to listen to excerpts of Menuhin’s recording. And yet he had a much better technique, in fact the recordings with Oistrakh moved along very quickly.” – The recordings from 1957/58 were remastered in original monaural reproduction quality. The recording of César Franck’s Violin Sonata with Igor Oistrakh is being released on CD for the first time.

At the tender age of nine, Felix Klieser dreamed of being able to play Mozart‘s horn concertos. Today, 18 years later, that dream has finally come true and Felix Klieser now performs on the world‘s foremost concert stages, playing the very works which are part of any horn player‘s core repertoire. Yet he took his time before recording all four of Mozart‘s horn concertos: only after releasing three successful CD albums and winning an ECHO Klassik award and the Leonard Bernstein Award did he go to Salzburg, in September 2018, to record them with the famous Camerata Salzburg ensemble. The album will be released on March 1, 2019.

Although fifty years have now passed since Fritz Wunderlich’s tragic death on September 17, 1966, the singer and his incomparable tenor voice have remained unforgotten. One reason for this was the meteoric success of his artistic career. Bonjour was founded in 2012 by composer and bassist Florent Ghys. By combining low strings- basses cellos, and guitars- with drumkit, pitched percussion, melodica, and voices, Ghys was able to create music which flows effortlessly across genres, creating a unique sound that is “equal parts groove, melody and meditation.” This release is Bonjour’s self-titled debut. The work is performance-based, but is still compelling in nature. Jazz and new classical influences can be heard in these works, but with an edge that pushes the music toward adventure, edginess, and slightly avante-garde. Ghys is joined by cellist Ashley Bathgate, guitarist James Moore, bassist Eleonore Oppenheim, and percussionist Owen Weaver. This release precedes a series of New York City performances which will begin in September 2016.

When Michael Gordon's Timber, scored for six amplified wooden 2-by-4s, premiered in 2009, it brought the physicality and endurance of percussion performance to a new level. In the liner notes for Slagwerk Den Haag's recording of the piece, released on Cataloupe Music in 2011, Gordon described a connection to the work of shamanist author Carlos Castaneda, whose self-imposed spirit journey in the desert could wipe the brain clean and "bring on visions." Newly recorded by Mantra Percussion and reworked by an A-list of producers and DJs, Gordon's deep exploration into the extreme possibilities of rhythm gets the full electronic treatment on Timber Remixed. This album contains six key remixes by Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Johann Johannsson, Fennesz and Hauschka.

In his original program notes for Sonatra, composer Michael Gordon writes that he conceived of the piece for solo piano as a sideways tribute to Frank Sinatra, but with the sonata form as an equal and opposite force that tugs at the music from within. “I grew up playing, or mis-playing, the piano,” he notes. “When I started writing Sonatra, I decided that since I would probably only ever write one piano piece in my entire life, I wanted to use all the keys on the piano, and use them often. I constructed long chains or links of major and minor thirds that ceaselessly wind their way up and down the piano. Eventually they start cascading and intersperse with glissandos half the length of the keyboard, sounding to me like the performer has at least four hands." Sonatra is slightly more than 15 minutes in length, but when performed in both equal temperament and just intonation, as Bang on a Can All-Stars pianist Vicky Chow has done for her singular recording of the piece, it takes on the aura and personality of a two-part epic.

The practice of hocketing is defined by splitting a single melody across multiple parts, often in surprising ways. While the form dates back as far as the Middle Ages, it is still found in musical traditions all over the world. Meara O’Reilly has written and recorded a series of hockets based on principles of perception, drawing both from cognitive research as well as historical practice. Each piece in the series explores a variety of conditions under which the listener might involuntarily fuse sequences of notes into melodic patterns, despite differing sound sources. In the entire work, there are never more than two notes occurring at one time, although it may often seem like there are many more. In the field of music cognition, this is also referred to as pseudo-polyphony, or melodic fission — a concept that first came to O’Reilly’s attention through researcher Albert Bregman’s work on Auditory Scene Analysis, and O'Reilly's own experiments with auditory perception while in residence at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. O’Reilly initially wrote the pieces on a computer in an attempt to push specific boundaries of what it was possible for the human voice to sing. She then taught herself to sing both parts, creating an uncanny valley in the resulting recording. The music currently exists solely as a recorded work, but it’s also intended to be sung live by two performers, or by a solo performer with electronics.

Back in April 2014 at Carnegie's Zankel Hall, Augustin Hadelich's performance of David Lang's 'mystery sonatas' was praised by the New York Times as a riveting display of “magisterial poise and serene control.” That same magic penetrates this starkly beautiful recording of the work, played by Hadelich on the exquisite 1723 “ex-Kiesewetter” Stradivari, on loan to him by its current owners since 2011. Lang based his 'mystery sonatas' on the famous pieces by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, but with a modern twist. “I decided to make my own virtuosic pieces about my most intimate, most spiritual thoughts,” he explains, “[but] mine are not about Jesus, and the violin is not retuned between movements. I did keep one of Biber's distinctions. He divides Jesus's life into three phases—the joyous, the sorrowful, and the glorious. The central pieces of my mystery sonatas are called 'joy,' 'sorrow,' and 'glory,' but these are all quiet, internal, reflective states of being.”

New music sextet Eighth Blackbird have been celebrated for their previous recordings, even winning a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. Filament is a new release with four world premiere recordings, as well as a concert recording of the influential piece Two Pages by Philip Glass. Symbolizing strong ties of musical interest and friendship, the title Filament was chosen carefully by the ensemble. Among the premiere recordings are Bryce Dessner’s Murder Ballades, which is a surprisingly upbeat take on the macabre, and Doublespeak by Nico Muhly which is an homage to Philip Glass and his classic minimalism. In addition to being featured composers, Dessner and Muhly are also featured musicians for the Glass composition.

Elverskud er en dramatisk kantate fra 1854 baseret på danske folkeviser. Værket blev en af Niels W. Gades største succeser; ikke kun i Danmark, men i hele Europa, hvor Elverskud blev opført flere hundrede gange, ofte dirigeret af Gade selv. Gade var særligt beundret i Tyskland, og på denne udgivelse opføres Elverskud for første gang i datidens instrumentation og for første gang med den tyske tekst, som gav værket sin internationale berømmelse. Måske er dette danske nationalklenodie ikke så dansk alligevel?

An adventure in sound and rhythm for open ears and minds. Bosque Mágico is the new project of the German world musician Ralf Siedhoff together with the Ukrainian oboist Mykyta Sierov. Both musicians live in the introspective classic town of Weimar and are rooted in world music. In their duo Bosque Màgico they fuse distances, cultures and languages into a common musical line. In Bosque Mágico the oboe adapts what until now has only been used in classical music into a completely unusual context. Improvisations, inspired by classical Indian music, flamenco, pop and jazz, are fused into this instrument and open a rarely heard sound cosmos. Ralf Siedhoff understands the guitar more and more as an orchestra. Through his individual manual skills via his right hand - a mix of flamenco and jazz technic - he gives a distinctive and impulsive rhythm to the compositions. A guitar whisperer as excessive as sensuous. The music is enriched by the versatile, spirited and intuitive percussionists Karthik Mani (India), Ernesto Martinez (Spain) and the drummer Magnus Dauner (Germany). Manuel and Carmela Delgado, father and daughter, contribute as special guests by playing flamenco guitar and bandoneon.

Sommaren 2003 träffades Henric Claeson och Andreas Andersson på en sportbar i Malmö. Efter en kväll då de båda talat sig lyriska om Grandaddy bildades H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S. Dagen efter skrivs samt inspelas den legendariska "4-track" skivan i Kafka studios, Malmö. Skivan paketeras i kaffefilter och H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S får människor att återigen börja tro på den elektroniska musikens inneboende krafter. H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S följer upp "4-track" med spelningar genom kareooke maskiner, på fester i Malmö, på tåg samt som mobilt ambulerande rock ´n beats band.

Konceptet tas vidare till nästa nivå. Efter experiment med kyrkorglar och ögonbindlar anlitas bröderna Petrus och Kristofer Lilja som trumslagare respektive gitarrist. H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S i bandtappning tar inte en ton på 6 månader, istället skapas och slipas planen för vad som komma skall. H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S filosoferar och laddar sina pistoler i tystnad. Skottet från höften kommer sommaren 2007, en ep spelas in, återigen i Kafka studios, Malmö. Inspelningen präglas av hetta och svett, kläder faller till golvet, solglasögon glider ner på näsan och H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S låter mer punk än någonsin tidigare. H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S spelar land och rike runt hösten 2007. Bandet spelar på alla fester värda namnet i Malmö med omnejd, H O U S E W I F E L O V E R S ser som sin mission att frälsa världen med punk, falsettesång samt dekadent undergångsromantik.
