Image Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3
Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Mariss Jansons, conductor

The two middle symphonies by Johannes Brahms form a highly contrasting pair of works, which define the radius of Brahms's musical language, equally marked by both poesy and the highest level of constructive stringency. The beauty of Brahmsian symphonic creativity comes to full fruition in these live recordings from the Musikverein in Vienna and the Herkulessaal in Munich under the direction of Mariss Jansons. The qualities of one of the world's best orchestras are captured in the highest fidelity by the audiophile SACD process.

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

One year after the successful release of the 2nd and 3rd symphonies by Johannes Brahms, the present double CD now completes the full cycle of Brahms's symphonies, as performed by the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Mariss Jansons.
Along with his 1st symphony ("Beethoven's Tenth"), it puts the finishing touch on the complete performance of Johannes Brahms' symphonic works, compositions oriented around the creativity of his great role model, yet in many ways also forward-looking and innovative.

These two popular 19th century orchestral masses could hardly be more different: even though there are only 40 years between Franz Schubert's Mass No. 2 in G major D. 167 and Charles Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass. While Schubert at the tender age of 18 wrote his mass - in a single week! - in the customary style at the time of the Missa brevis, Charles Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass stands out by virtue of lustrous tone colors with harp and winds - reminiscent in many places of grand opéra.

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Mariss Jansons

Mariss Jansons interprets Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" and "Ionisation" by Edgard Varèse. Following the Beethoven box, with its juxtaposition of classical and contemporary works, the current CD with Mariss Jansons and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks again features an encounter between music from different epochs. In the "Symphonie fantastique" Mariss Jansons, Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, investigates the dream worlds of the Romantic movement, and in "Ionisation" by Edgard Varèse transforms complex structures into an event of sensual immediacy. Both these works were important starting-points for the dawn of a new musical age.

In its history as a concert orchestra, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks has also devoted itself on numerous occasions to opera, under such eminent conductors as Rafael Kubelik and Leonard Bernstein. Chief conductor Mariss Jansons also maintains the tradition, for example with concert performances of Russian operas such as "Eugene Onegin". BR-KLASSIK now presents the 2014 live recording in Munich's Philharmonie im Gasteig of the semi-staged performance of Tchaikovsky's late masterpiece "The Queen of Spades". With great connoisseurship, Mariss Jansons has brought together a group of singers for this performance in original Russian who are all native speakers of the language, and very familiar with the work. They include Misha Didyk as Hermann, Tatiana Serjan as Lisa, and Alexey Markov as Prince Yeletsky.

Chor and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks / Mariss Jansons

Dvorák's haunting 'Stabat Mater' for solo voices, chorus and orchestra is not only the most famous work of church music by the Bohemian composer - it is also one of the most impressive ever settings of the medieval hymn in which Mary, the mother of Jesus, gives vivid expression to the pain she feels at the sight of her crucified son. The terrible misfortunes that befell the composer in his private life during the creation of this work may have been a reason for this. It is the continuous expression of deep piety, above all, that gives this music its special dignity. It was precisely this intensity that was conveyed by the concert on March 26, 2015 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz, where the four renowned soloists were in fine voice, and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks once again delivered the "crystal clear sound" and "incredible three-dimensionality" for which it is highly praised time and again.

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks / Mariss Jansons

Dvorák's lyrical and cheerful Eighth Symphony, which premiered successfully in Prague on February 2, 1890, is one of the famous Bohemian composer's most often-played works. He succeeded here "in writing a work different from my other symphonies, with individual thoughts elaborated in a new way". Every movement and every melody in this music reflects the fact that it was wholly inspired by the landscape of Bohemia. Dvorák's close familiarity with and love of Slavonic folk music can be clearly heard, as can his deep preoccupation with the symphonies of Tchaikovsky.
