MAY NEWS 2018

NEW ON NAXOS

Here is the May issue of NEW ON NAXOS. The month’s spotlight recording is Robert Schumann’s complete works for the cello, including the Cello Concerto and works for piano and cello, performed by cellist Gabriel Schwabe with pianist Nicholas Rimmer, and the Royal Northern Sinfonia conducted by Lars Vogt. The album includes the world premiere recording of the Intermezzo from the F–A–E Sonata arranged for cello by Schwabe.

Other highlights include:

• Boris Giltburg’s third Rachmaninov album featuring Piano Concerto No. 3 and Variations on a Theme of Corelli. Gitlburg is again accompanied in the concerto by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto.

• Hector Berlioz’s opera Benvenuto Cellini, recorded from a production by the Dutch National Opera, directed by renowned actor-director Terry Gilliam. The production features a strong cast led by tenor John Osborn and soprano Mariangela Sicilia.

• The latest publication from Naxos Books – My First Piano Book – written by Genevieve Helsby, with illustrations by Jason Chapman. Bursting with life and humour, this is a uniquely comprehensive introduction to the piano, designed first and foremost to inspire. The previous release, My First Classical Music Book, was highly successful and The Times described it as “excellent”.

Schumann’s complete works for cello, including Gabriel Schwabe's two unique arrangements. Schwabe has recently received great critical reviews for his Saint-Saens disc [8.573737] which was a recent Gramophone Choice: ‘Exceptional… Schwabe plays with a light heart and produces a light, airy tone to match, combined with a nonchalance and poise that I found most attractive.’

The previous concerto disc in this series was the Second Concerto on 8.573629 of which Gramophone wrote: ‘The fusion of freshness with generous spirit and soul lends an enthralling dynamism to this familiar repertoire. Boris Giltburg faithfully observes Rachmaninov’s marks of expression in the concerto and the Op 33 Etudes, but there is a fluid imagination at work here tied to an enquiring musical intelligence.’

Image Benvenuto Cellini (2 DVD)
With his affinity for the 16th-century sculptor Benvenuto Cellini’s advocacy of artistic and personal freedom, Hector Berlioz went straight for the grand gesture with his first completed opera. Returning to it years after initial production debacles, Berlioz stated that he would ‘never again find such verve and Cellinian impetuosity, nor such a variety of ideas.’ The plot revolves around Cellini’s wooing of Teresa, a match frustrated at every opportunity by his rival, the cowardly Fieramosca. Benvenuto Cellini is a pithy work combining romance, excitement, violence, comedy and spectacle; the perfect stage for Terry Gilliam’s stylishly colorful and larger than life directing.

Image Festive Symphomy
Smetana’s Festive Symphony, his only formal symphony, was composed in 1854 when hopes for Emperor Franz Joseph becoming King of Bohemia were high. It pre-echoes later masterpieces such as Má Vlast. With its sparkling overture and lively rural dances, The Bartered Bride secured Smetana’s international reputation.

Poulenc wrote two ballets, the suites from which feature on this recording. Fusing together musical styles from various periods and genres Les Biches is a sequence of captivating dances that explore many themes which were considered taboo at the time. In Les Animaux modèles, Poulenc transforms the animals of La Fontaine’s fables into human characters in a patchwork score brimming with colour, wit and self-borrowings.

Roberto Sierra is internationally renowned for his integration of Caribbean music with the Western idioms he acquired during studies in Europe. The character of Kandinsky ranges from the intimate to the bold and virtuosic, while the Clarinet Sonata explores the intricate swing of Caribbean mixed meters and instrumental colours in a work of stunning expressiveness and virtuosity. Sierra’s longest chamber work to date, Treinta y tres formas de observar un mismo objeto, is one of the most substantial works in the repertoire for two performers at a single piano. Sierra’s music can be heard on five other Naxos albums: 8.559263, 8.559264, 8.559611, 8.559817 and 8.559738.

"Pauline and Paul Viardot were members of the famous García family, Pauline’s father the world renowned operatic tenor Manuel, and her son Paul a violin prodigy who rubbed shoulders with Europe’s elite and became a friend and colleague of Saint-Saëns. Pauline’s Six Morceaux were composed as a gift to her young son. Beyond his Sonatas (Naxos 8.573607), much of Paul Viardot’s music consists of the short ‘salon’ works on this recording, an evocation of 1920s Paris and French elegance."

Image The Book of the Courtier (10 CD)
Set in the court of Urbino in 1507, Castiglione’s The Book of the Courtier presents an invaluable look at court life and culture during the Renaissance. Over four nights of dialogue, the book explores the key question, ‘What should a courtier be like?’ and presents a deep and timeless discussion that is reminiscent of Plato’s Symposium and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, and invites comparisons with Machiavelli’s The Prince. It is absorbing and enlightening, and encompasses a wide range of topics that include dancing, fencing, war, religion, culture, courtly and corporeal love and gender relations, with a surprisingly modern defense of women and equal rights.

Image Satyricon (6 CD)
Petronius’ Satyricon is a rampant and vivacious Roman adventure dating back to the first century, during the reign of Nero. It follows the exploits of Encolpius, an impoverished ex-gladiator, and his boy-lover Giton. The action is fleet and the narrative sweeping: over the course of their journey we meet a host of lewd and comical rogues, including beggars, prostitutes, poets, sodomites and pedants, and witness many strange and curious events, including a remarkably vulgar multi-course feast, hosted by the pompous nouveau riche Trimalchio. Considered the Odyssey of the illicit and debaucherous, the Satyricon is an exhilarating look at the underbelly of Roman society.

Image Sister Carrie (14 CD)
A magnificent portrayal of 1890s America and the harsh realities of a dog-eat-dog world, Sister Carrie lies at the forefront of American Naturalism. When poor young provincial woman Carrie Meeber arrives in Chicago, she little expects to be catapulted from lower-class woman to prominent Broadway actress. Passive and yielding, she lets circumstances coerce her into action and by good fortune she arrives at fame. It is in Chicago that Carrie meets a successful businessman, Hurstwood, who helps her establish her name. Gripped by a strong attraction to Carrie, Hurstwood ends his marriage and moves with her to New York. Their relationship soon ends and, like a fish out of water, Hurstwood finds himself vagrant and destitute on the streets of an unfamiliar city, a poignant counterpoint to Carrie’s rapid rise. Frank, evocative and compelling, Sister Carrie gives us a version of the American dream with a gritty and unattractive reality.
