"Evelyn Glennie and the Albany Symphony provide an evocative interpretation" Pizzicato

"All this virtuosity and incident is crammed into one action-packed disc lasting just 53 minutes: the Power of Tower, indeed. Recommended" Gramophone

"These fabulous premiere recordings give a good representation of the range of music Tower has been producing over recent years. It is particularly good to hear performances from Evelyn Glennie as one of a cast of top rate musicians here. The earliest work, Strike Zones, dates from 2001 and the latest, Small from 2016. Both these feature percussion. Still/Rapids combines piano and orchestra with the final piece, Ivory & Ebony being a test piece for an international piano competition" Lark Reviews

Joan Tower is widely regarded as one of today’s most important American composers. The works heard here in their world premiere recordings are part of a growing legacy that one pundit has described as “The Power of Tower.” Strike Zones is tailor-made for percussionist Evelyn Glennie’s dazzling technique and impeccable musicianship.

"There is so much to enjoy: brilliant orchestration, some knock-out tunes and an abundance of rhythmic energy" Classical Music Daily

Adolphe Adam is best known today for the ballets Giselle and Le Corsaire, but his prolific output included 39 operas and several other ballet scores, including the vivacious tale of La Filleule des fées (‘The Fairies’ God-daughter’). The story takes place in an idealized countryside, revolving around the god-daughter Ysaure’s complex amorous affairs and the magical interventions of good and wicked fairies. With its brilliantly colorful orchestration, memorable themes and rhythmic momentum, this work is very much the equal of Giselle.

"The Cologne Chamber Orchestra, of which Poppen is the principal conductor, plays with great agility, bouncy and very colourful. The excellent WDR Rundfunkchor and the quartet of soloists, who fit seamlessly into the whole and never stand out, put the finishing touches on the interpretations"
Pizzicato

★★★★★
"Germany’s regional choirs are probably the world’s best; most are large by today’s standards, and the WDR Rundfunkchor combines clarity and a rich sound. Poppen’s readings are straightforward and unfussy, capturing a lyricism in these works that is sometimes lost in crisper historically oriented readings, but the big news is simply that some underexposed works are getting their due."

Image Double Echo: New Guitar Concertos from the America
"Lively and entertaining" Lark Reviews

This album of guitar concertos from the Americas features pieces composed for David Tanenbaum. Building on a tradition of prominent guitarists generating repertoire through new commissions, these works present the guitar in a variety of settings. Kernis’s concerto dips with ease into the world of pop music, whereas his Lullaby and Soliloquyare reflective, lyrical and romantic. Sierra’s concerto asserts a rhythmic and percussive character, while Piazzolla’s dark and sentimental double concerto is one of his least-known works.

Image Violin Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 and Sonata for Solo Vi
♥♥♥♥♥
"Tianwa Yang får også plads til at vise, hvad hun kan alene uden orkester, i en solosonate af Prokofjev, og albummet er et fantastisk visitkort for hende. Som alle andre violinister, der er nået til at blive solist, er Yang begyndt på instrumentet som helt lille, og hendes Prokofjev-album viser derfor en moden kunstner med fuld teknisk og musikalsk kontrol,”
Politiken

Prokofiev first became fascinated by the violin upon hearing the playing of his private teacher, Reinhold Glière. A dozen years later Prokofiev wrote his ViolinConcertoNo.1– a work of contrasting open-hearted lyricism and whimsical playfulness that features a wild central Scherzo with dazzling technical gymnastics. By contrast, the Violin Concerto No. 2 is emotionally reserved and sardonic with an inspired plaintive and long-arching slow movement. Composed to an official Soviet commission for an ensemble piece to be played by talented child violinists in unison, the witty and upbeat Sonata for Solo Violin can also be played by a single performer.

"Alsop’s Prokofiev Symphony cycle is among the finest; the inclusion of many other orchestral works adds to the appeal" MusicWeb International

"Marc Soustrot conducts Saint-Saëns as if it were a piece of his own. Everything is right here, tempi, dynamics, the progression of the music, creating moods that hold the listener captive" Pizzicato

Saint-Saens wrote five symphonies between the years 1850 and 1886. The cycle began with the Mozart-influenced Symphony in A but as a precocious composer of 17 he wrote his first numbered symphony, a work much admired by Berlioz and Gounod. He progressed to his most popular piece in the genre, the ground-breaking Symphony No. 3 with its inclusion of organ and piano. This critically admired cycle includes a sequence of atmospheric and dramatic symphonic poems, including Phaeton and the ever-popular Danse macabre.

Image The Best of Malcolm Arnold
"Released to celebrate the centenary of Malcolm Arnold’s birth, this collection is a very good introduction to his music with single movements from symphonies and concertos, the well-loved English Dances, Set 1 and the 3 Shanties and other shorter works"
Lark Reviews

Sir Malcolm Arnold was one of the most gifted British composers of his generation. His music communicates directly with listeners through its rhythmic vitality and brilliant orchestration, with melodies that are eloquent, memorable and catchy. Spanning his long creative life, Arnold’s output has nine symphonies at its heart, but also ranges from the popular overture Tam O’Shanter and the lyrical English Dances, to film scores, deeply personal chamber music, and concertos composed for distinguished musical colleagues. This comprehensive introduction to Arnold’s legacy celebrates his centenary year with a rich selection of acclaimed recordings.

Image Complete Music for String Quartet
Penderecki succeeds in combining avant-garde and tradition, especially in his quartets, and the Tippett Quartet makes this more than clear" Pizzicato

"Glorious performances of endlessly fascinating works" MusicWeb International

"The Tippett Quartet’s album, in every respect, is whole and rewarding" The Guardian

"[An] exhilarating survey of the late Polish composer’s chamber music for strings… The Tippett Quartet attacks every note with lovely gusto and precision" The Times (London)

Penderecki wrote music for string quartet over a period of 56 years. His StringQuartetNo.1was written in the same year that he achieved international success with Threnody (Naxos8.554491), and includes a wide range of playing techniques reflective of the avant-garde. String Quartet No. 2 reveals the influence of Ligeti, while No.3is a personal, even autobiographical work. In No. 4 there are modal or even folk inflections, in writing that is both limpid and abrasive. The eventful Derunterbrochene Gedanke completes Penderecki’s music for quartet, while the String Trio exemplifies his music’s motoric energy.

"The CD sets out to prove that there is more to Addinsell than just Warsaw Concerto. Shades of this are to be heard in the new-to-me theme from A Tale of Two Cities which ends the collection. A very welcome and enjoyable production" Lark Reviews

World-famous for the Warsaw Concerto from the film Dangerous Moonlight, Richard Addinsell was one of Britain’s leading composers for stage and screen. This selection ranges widely over every area of his achievement and includes the theme from his first international film success, Goodbye Mr. Chips, and the overture from Tom Brown’s Schooldays, which contains some of his finest music. The Smokey Mountains, an evocative ‘concerto’ in three movements, is a rare example of the genre, while The Isle of Apples reflects his importance as a composer of music for radio plays.

Image Elena
During the 1813–14 carnival season in Naples, Simon Mayr wrote a much-admired opera semiseria called Elena. The post-revolutionary Napoleonic era saw great enthusiasm for the rescue opera genre and Elena is a perfect example, in which a complex plot, based on French models, sees an innocent falsely accused of a capital offence. Mayr’s subtle accommodation of Neapolitan opera and Viennese Classicism ensures a series of choruses and recitatives that drive the action forward, punctuated with arias, romances, ensembles, lyric richness and moments of witty buffo color.

Image Songs, Vol. 2
"This second volume includes quite a variety of settings. The more serious Drei Gesange fur mittlere Singstimme und Klavier, Op 18 ventures into the realms of more experimental harmony and form. This contrasts with some of the other songs which are in lighter style more reminiscent of Musical Theatre. A very good collection" Lark Reviews

In his song settings, Korngold pursued the Romantic ideal and lavished considerable care and inventiveness on their composition. His seemingly effortless gift for melody is everywhere apparent in this second volume (Vol.1 is on 8.572027), whether in the early works or the songs from the 1940s, which would not sound out of place in an operetta or a Broadway musical. Also present, notably in the Drei Gesänge, Op.18, is an exciting, experimental approach to harmony that reflects the music of his most radical opera, Das Wunderder Heliane (8.660410-12).

"The duo Baldini-Rossi interprets this innovative and fascinating artistry and sometimes touches the sublime. A success to discover" Le Parnasse Musical

"The performances are invigorating" The Sunday Times, London

Heitor Villa-Lobos’s three violin sonatas date from a key period in his career: the moment at which he matured as a composer, established his personal idiom and achieved his first professional triumphs. Each sonata shares some influence from French late Romanticism or Impressionism, as well as revealing Villa-Lobos’s skill as a string player. The First Violin Sonata’s subtitle of Désespérance (‘Despair’) suits its melancholy lyricism, while the ‘infinite abundance of musical ideas’ in the Second Violin Sonata is characterized by a wide range of emotions. The sophisticated Third Violin Sonata is steeped in the influence of Debussy, but also anticipates Villa-Lobos’s new directions in the 1920s.

Image Piano Trio in A Minor & Piano Quartet No. 1 in D M
Chamber music was a crucial element in Enescu’s output and these two works, separated by seven years, represent very different phases of his compositional development. The large-scale PianoQuartetNo.1marks the climax of his early maturity. The Piano Trio in A minor, however, was unknown until 1965 and represents a more transitional stage – a compact but intricately expressive work with an animated and compelling sequence of variations at its heart.

Arthur Sullivan is best remembered today for his Savoy Operas with W.S. Gilbert, but during his lifetime Sullivan was also famed for his church, concert hall and stage works. These three sets of incidental music show his versatility in the genre. The music for The Merry Wives of Windsor has a joviality and lightness that matches its pantomime mood, while the concert suite for Macbeth weaves together nervous tension and impending tragedy. By contrast, King Arthur required one of Sullivan’s specialties, a sequence of choruses, edited after his death into this evocative suite.

Image Complete Symphonies and Dances (6CD)
Recorded in the presence of the composer, Andrew Penny’s survey of the Complete Symphonies and Dances by Sir Malcolm Arnold has long been considered to contain benchmark recordings. Born in 1921, Sir Malcolm Arnold quickly established himself as a fluent and versatile composer, a gifted tunesmith and a brilliant orchestrator. His music is typically lucid in texture, rich in melody and clear in draughtsmanship yet there are frequent signs of a complex musical personality and dramatic tensions not far beneath the surface. The Dances are light-hearted, vivid and jaunty, yet the nine symphonies explore the composer’s darker side, painting a picture of his private ‘journey through hell’ as he struggled with physical and mental health issues. They are masterworks which exert continued appeal and stimulate repeated listening.

The Hiawatha trilogy, with its stirring overture, established Coleridge-Taylor as one of Britain’s leading young composers and stimulated commissions in a wide variety of music. The Othello Suite was written for a stage production of the play, its powerful and contrasting themes illustrating the composer’s prowess in characterization. Redolent of popular ballads and romances, the Petite Suite de Concert is a masterpiece of light music, while the charming Romance of the Prairie Lilies shows Coleridge-Taylor’s lasting influence on future generations of British composers.

Korngold’s greatest critical successes lay in the field of opera and in his film scores. The early sets of incidental music reflect these two elements, sharing the theatrical bravura of opera and anticipating his own later filmic techniques. The music for the Viennese production of Shakespeare’s much Ado About Nothing in 1920, heard here in full, is expressive and dramatic. Der Vampir, a psychological study of desire, seduction and greed, is rarely heard, but remains a potent example of Korngold’s instinct for directness of characterization.

With Two Marimbas in Berlin, award-winning duo DoubleBeats presents world premiere recordings of four pinnacles of the keyboard repertoire and two modern classics in their own remarkable arrangements for marimbas and percussion. Soft, resonant tones and high drama emerge through the duo’s exceptional dexterity and control in works by Chopin and Rachmaninov, as well as in Bach’s iconic Goldberg Variations. Haydn’s lighthearted Variations contrast with the thrills of Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, and the album finishes with Minoru Miki’s poignant Marimba Spiritual.

“The March King”, expressing the brash energy of an emerging United States of America in famous pieces such as The Stars and Stripes Forever! Sousa’s prolific inventiveness also saw the creation of some 28 highly entertaining Fantasies that often combined original music with arrangements of Western European works. The commemorative Assembly of the Artisans mixes light-hearted tunes with more serious hymn-like music, finishing with the “Anvil Chorus” from Verdi’s Il trovatore, while The Messiah of Nations sets a patriotic text by James Whitcomb Riley. On with the Dance is a potpourri that includes music by Meyerbeer, and Music of the Minute combines waltzes by Sousa and Jerome Kern.
