NOVEMBER NEWS 2019

NEW ON NAXOS

NEW ON NAXOS in NOVEMBER marks the highly-anticipated release of our Beethoven ‘Complete Edition’, a very special 90-disc boxed set to celebrate the composer’s 250th birth anniversary in 2020. Containing over 100 hours of unduplicated music and more than 1,550 tracks, the box features outstanding interpretations by exemplary soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestras and conductors. From Beethoven’s popular works, to a host of fragments, sketches, drafts, arrangements, transcriptions and reconstructions – some of which have never been recorded – this is the most complete collection of Beethoven’s works available in the market.

Accompanying the release is a comprehensive 136-page booklet, two free album downloads of Liszt’s piano transcriptions of the symphonies and songs, an animated ‘unboxing’ video, artist interviews, as well as a dedicated mini-site containing detailed information about the boxed set.

Other highlights include:
• Jun Märkl’s newest album of Camille Saint-Saëns’ orchestral works, conducting the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in performances of the ballet music from Ascanio, and overtures from Les Barbares, Andromaque, La Princesse jaune and more. There will be a video interview with Jun Märkl accompanying this release.

• The latest instalment in the ‘Music of Brazil’ series, featuring Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Guitar Concerto and Harmonica Concerto, recorded by guitarist Manuel Barrueco and José Staneck on harmonica, accompanied by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under GRAMMY Award-winning conductor Giancarlo Guerrero.

• World premiere recordings of Dmitry Shostakovich’s film music for The Bedbug and Love and Hate, presented by conductor Mark Fitz-Gerald with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and the Mannheim Opera Choir. Fitz-Gerald’s sterling work of reconstructing the composer’s film scores has been generally widely-received, and this new release will certainly appeal to enthusiasts.

Image Ascanio; Les Barbares - Prologue; Jota aragonesa
Release 22nd of November

Saint-Saëns’ operatic works contain instrumental music of vivacity and charm but have been undeservedly overlooked. Ascanio contains a substantial and elaborate divertissement that fellow composer Reynaldo Hahn termed ‘the entire Renaissance in a few pages’. Les Barbares, a tale of conquest and revenge, includes a vivid Prologue and joyful ballet, while La Princesse jaune with its pentatonic writing, and La Jota aragonese laced with Spanish vitality, show the composer at his most generously carefree. Jun Markl is a highly-respected interpreter of core Germanic repertoire and has become known for his refined and idiomatic explorations of the French Impressionists. His long-standing relationships with the state operas of Vienna, Berlin and Munich, the Semperoper Dresden and the Metropolitan Opera have been complemented by his music directorships of the Orchestre National de Lyon and the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra. In recognition of his achievements in Lyon, he was honoured in 2012 with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Märkl has an extensive discography – among the over 50 albums he has recorded are the complete Schumann symphonies, works by Mendelssohn and Wagner, Ravel, Messiaen, and a highly-acclaimed Debussy set with the Orchestre National de Lyon. He is currently working on a cycle of works by Saint-Saëns and Hosokawa.

Image Lieder, Vol. 1
Release 22nd of November

Beethoven’s contribution to the development of German song was significant – he wrote some 90 songs – but it has inevitably been overshadowed by his mastery of orchestral and instrumental music. Unlike Mozart and Schubert’s works in the genre, little is known about the composition and performance of Beethoven’s songs, but he is known to have greatly respected Goethe, as his settings amply show, not least in the incidental music to Egmont, from which Freudvoll und leidvoll is taken. A versatile concert singer, Austrian soprano Elisabeth Breuer has performed with the top orchestras in Germany and Austria. Her work with conductors such as Daniel Harding, Franz Welser-Möst, Andrew Manze, Hansjörg Albrecht and Martin Haselböck has taken her to the Elbphilharmonie, Musikverein in Vienna, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Kölner Philharmonie and Munich Philharmonie am Gasteig. Rainer Trost has appeared at the most prestigious opera houses and festivals in the world. He has recorded numerous albums, including Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Lehár’s The Merry Widow, Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Mendelssohn’s Saint Paul, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and Fidelio, as well as recordings of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin and Schubert’s Friends. Paul Armin Edelmann has sung at major opera and concert venues, and the state theatres in Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, Wiesbaden, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Leipzig. Edelmann has worked with renowned conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Lorin Maazel, Michel Plasson, Jeffrey Tate and Manfred Honeck. His discography includes Reger Orchestral Songs and an album of works by Schubert. Bass Ricardo Bojorquez made his stage debut while there in June 2014 as Bottom in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He has subsequently sung various roles such as Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Masetto and Comendatore in Don Giovanni, Sarastro and Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, Cold Genius in King Arthur, Le Bailli in Werthe rand Sciarrone in Tosca.

Image Beatles Go Baroque Again
Release 22nd of November

Classical musicians have always recognized the musicality and originality of The Beatles’ songs, Leonard Bernstein declaring the Lennon-McCartney composing team ‘the Schuberts of our time’. This sequel to Peter Breiner’s multi-platinum Beatles Go Baroque(Naxos 8.555010) takes the original concept even further, keeping 18th-century masterpieces such as Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Bach’s famously stylish and beautiful Violin Concerto No. 1 largely intact, elegantly combining them with The Beatles’ most enduring melodies to create a joyously genuine 21st-century mashup. Peter Breineris one of the world’s most recorded musicians, with over 200 albums released and multiple streams and downloads. Known as a conductor, composer, pianist and arranger, he has conducted, often doubling as a pianist, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth, Jerusalem, New Zealand, Moscow and Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestras, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Slovak Philharmonic and the Orchestre National de France, to mention just a few. His compositions and arrangements have been played in concerts and broadcast worldwide, and some of the most prestigious ballet companies have used his music in numerous performances.

Release 22nd of November

Portuguese composer Vasco Mendonça regards this portrait album as a letter to himself – written over time and with different chapters that throw light on his long-standing obsessions with drama, ritual and precision mechanism. Group Together, Avoid Speech highlights the string and woodwind principals of the wonderful Gulbenkian Orchestra to create ‘a Baroque concerto grosso on steroids’, while Unanswerable Light is a memorial to a friend and a meditation on fury and loss. The piano concerto Step Right Up is ‘a ritual celebration between the most incredible music box – the orchestra – and the most beautiful sound machine – the piano.’ This is Vasco Mendonça’s Naxos debut recording. Including the world premiere of Mendonça’s new piano concerto Step Right Up, this programme of remarkable orchestral works will raise his profile and deservedly introduce this exciting compositional voice to a wide audience

Release 22nd of November

Robert Groslot’s significant contribution to the concerto genre is explored here in works that emphasize enjoyment in performance, and precision in sonorities and structure. The Cello Concerto includes a musical joke, whereby the soloist ‘quarrels’ with the concert master, only for the argument to be quelled by one of the percussionists. Robert Groslot made his name as a concert pianist, winning both the Alessandro Casagrande and Queen Elizabeth competitions in the 1970s. He has since developed a career as conductor, multimedia artist and composer. This world premiere recording of three significant concertos follows on from a release in August 2018 with his Violin Concerto and Concerto for Orchestra (8.573808), also performed with the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by the composer. This was highly acclaimed by the critics, summed up by Fanfare as ‘highly rewarding music... Groslot possesses a musical voice well worth hearing and clearly aims to entertain his listeners.

Image Joseph der Menschheit Segen
Release 22nd of November

Vienna was a magnet for musicians across Europe in the 18th century, and among the most successful and influential were composers from Bohemia. Credited with developing idiomatic piano performance in the city, Leopold Koželuch also wrote choral music of considerable individuality. Joseph der Menschheit Segen (‘Joseph, Mankind’s Blessing’) is a powerful Masonic cantata that unusually includes Melodrama, where spoken text is followed by instrumental passages. The two sacred arias are masterful compositions and the Missa in C, though small in scale, is unusually lavish in its scoring. Klage auf den Todt Marien Theresien (‘On the Death of Maria Theresa’) possesses a grave and subtle beauty. This new release also features the Naxos debut of the Czech Boys Choir Boni Pueri. Founded in 1982, it has become one of Europe’s most famous vocal ensembles and have given more than 3000 performances in Europe, North America and Asia.

Image Grand Symphonies, Vol. 1 - Nos. 1 & 3
Release 22nd of November

Beethoven and Hummel’s relationship was one of fractious beginnings, but ultimately true friendship. Between 1825 and 1835 Hummel arranged his contemporary’s Symphonies Nos. 1-7 and Septet, Op. 20 for his favored combination of pianoforte, flute, violin, and violoncello. Beethoven would surely not have objected- arrangements were, after all, a perfectly normal part of the 19th-century musical landscape. To audiences today his symphonies need little introduction but, thanks to the musical sensitivity and sheer brilliance of Hummel’s arrangements, it is possible to experience the thrill of hearing these extraordinary pieces afresh.

Release 22nd of November

Paul Juon’s musical education provided him with a direct link to the German Romantic style of Mendelssohn and Schumann, and he has even been called the ‘Russian Brahms.’ These three violin sonatas represent an important artistic statement by this neglected master, also showing his artistic evolution. The First Sonata is reminiscent of Tchaikovsky in its melodic beauty, the Second Sonata enriched with Scandinavian flavor in its mercurial character and chromatic intensity. The masterful and dramatic Third Sonata evokes an epic imagined landscape full of natural and supernatural beings.
