Victoria and Her Hussar is a rare pearl of the glamorous revue-operetta that is not often presented. Even in Mörbisch, this piece could only be heard twice: in 1960 and most recently in 1973, over forty years ago with Johannes Heesters, amongst others.

"...en yderst detaljeret og seriøs kontrolfreak. Klarhed er altafgørende for ham, her er balance, gennemsigtighed og tydelig formbeskrivelse."
Magasinet Klassisk Jens Cornelius november/december 2016

Gabriele Carcano consciously took his time with this debut CD: "I waited such a long time in order to play a programme with which I can express who I am." Beyond question, the Variations, Op. 9 on a Theme by Schumann had to be included. "I absolutely wanted to record them, because this work is so personal and so many reference points are contained within it" – especially the composer's proximity to Schumann and then his predilection for the variation genre.

The career of Christina Landshamer is presently running in just one direction: upwards. Having just re-turned from her debut at the Chicago Lyric Opera Chicago (Sophie in Rosenkavalier) and Carnegie Hall in New York, the artist is now presenting her first CD for OehmsClassics. In Co-production with BR Klassik, together with Gerold Huber at the piano, she has recorded a beautiful recital with well-known Schumann Lieder as well as lesser-known but highly interesting Lieder by Viktor Ullmann.

Staatskapelle Weimar / Hansjörg Albrecht

Walter Braunfels achieved his breakthrough as a composer during the 1920s with the opera The Birds (based on Aristophanes). Shortly thereafter he was, alongside Richard Strauss, one of the outstanding and most frequently performed German opera composers. His extremely versatile compositional oeuvre includes numerous operas, orchestral works and choral works, as well as Lieder, chamber music and piano works. He was praised as a forward looking representative of the New Music. The most famous conductors of the era, such as Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Hans Knappertsbusch, Fritz Busch, Hermann Abendroth, Hans Pfitzner, Arthur Nikisch and Günter Wand, performed his compositions in the great German music centres, in Vienna, London and New York. Braunfels regarded himself as a traditional late-romantic composer, a successor to Berlioz,Wagner and Bruckner. During the period of the Third Reich, he was dismissed as a “half Jew” from all offices and performances of his works were banned. After the Second World War, representatives of the musical avantgarde found Braunfels’s style no longer contemporary, which is why he gradually became forgotten. Since the 1990s, however, his complete oeuvre has been undergoing a wonderful Renaissance and is being enthusiastically rediscovered by the international musical world.

The works recorded here reveal a refined and original style, especially when Susanne Lang delves into the spiritual world of Gunst with her sensitive musicality … Susanne Lang captures these moods and styles in exemplary fashion, making the most of dissonant ten-sions and of quasi-impressionistic timbres alike. This makes one want to hear more.” This was the verdict of Fono-Forum in the 07/2014 issue on Volume 1 of the piano works of Evgenij Gunst recorded by Susanne Lang. She has willingly responded to this “desire to hear more”, this time add-ing chamber music by Claude Debussy performed to-gether with Elena Denisova.

Carl Orff Choir, Marktoberdorf / Stefan Wolitz

The production of this extraordinary CD is based on two main aspects.

Firstly, the re-creation of the celebration of a Mass with purely musical means whereby not only the Ordinarium (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) but also the Proprium (e.g. The Lord’s Prayer, Alleluia, etc.) are sung and/or played by the organ.

The second aspect is the contrast of a Mass setting from the Renaissance (from which all parts of the Ordinarium are taken, except for the Credo) with choral works of the 21st century. The idea here is, on the one hand, to create an exciting contrast and, on the other hand, to interconnect these different parts to form an organic whole.

Maximilian Schmitt, tenor
WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne / Patrick Lange

Maximilian Schmitt discovered his love for music already during his youthful years with the Regensburg Boys' Choir. It was still during his period in Munich that Maximilian Schmitt made his debut at the Salzburg Provincial Theatre as Tamino in The Magic Flute before accepting a four-year engagement with the Mannheim National Theatre.

In the meantime, Maximilian Schmitt sings in all the major opera houses.

The present recording is already his third CD for OehmsClassics.

Following Heine Lieder and Die Schöne Müllerin, Maximilian Schmitt proves with this recording that he hardly needs fear any competition in the area of romantic arias by composers ranging from Flotow and Weber to Wagner. He is sensitively supported by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under the direction of Patrick Lange.

On her first CD for OehmsClassics, Andrea Benecke occupies herself with a composer who was justifiably called a universal genius during his own time: Johann Mattheson.
Mattheson composed no few than six operas, 33 oratorios, orchestral works and chamber music. For this recording, Andrea Benecke consciously chose a modern concert grand piano, for this instrument brings out the singing quality of Mattheson's style.
