Leif Segerstam, conductor

"...there are no finer performances available of either symphony, and that's saying a lot--but once you hear this exceptional disc I have little doubt that you will agree. This disc is special. (...) Throughout, the playing of the orchestra is simply gorgeous, with extremely characterful string phrasing, cutting but always well-tuned interjections from the winds, and imposing but never crude brass and timpani. Ensemble balances are simply perfect between sections, and the sonics are warmly natural."

(Svenska Dagbladet)

Lindberg's conviction, and technical resourcefulness, in creating this sound world can inspire rapturous enjoyment or alienated bafflement (...). The effect is always upbeat, exuberant and laid down with immense panache by the Finnish forces involved, in spectacularly vivid sound.
Arnold Whittall, Gramophone, March 2010

HÖGSTA BETYG I SYDSVENSKAN

(Sydsvenskan)

"The life-force of Kaija Saariaho's music is its feast of sensory awakening and shocking emotional nakedness. A raw honesty permeates the atmosphere of mystery. This music is an obsessive, immersive and magical weather system bringing ecstasy, cleansing, and renewal."

The Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen performs these volatile and fugitive pieces (Sept papillons) with grace and clarity. (...) The Los Angeles Philharmonic manages in an enchanting way to make audible what constitutes the basic components of Saariaho's elegant construction of colour and sound: finding the balance through extremes in articulation, phrasing and sound, as well as artfully delicate transition. (...) This CD proves that contemporary music is not necessarily austere or ethereal, but can present itself in a very approachable and sensual way. (...) The entire production is a splendid and entirely successful example of contemporary sound magic.

It has been said that the heroic Third Symphony, written after his student years in 1961, almost sounds like Bruckner. Rautavaara's own notes in the CD booklet declare that "the four movements breathe in a solemn, Brucknerian swelling - akin to the rhythm of the land and the sea."

Image Asrael Symphony
GRAMOPHONE EDITOR'S CHOICE

"I think reviewer David Gutman is right to hear something of Mahler in Suk's rarely recorded Asrael. Certainly Ashkenazy and the Helsinki Phil find a direct and gripping emotional line here, but there's also something distinctly otherwordly underlining the whole (a touch of the Prokofievs?). Anyway, this recording is a powerful declamation of Suk's own voice. But Mahlerians will love it!"
(Gramophone)

"I was saved by music," wrote Czech composer Josef Suk about his 'Asrael' Symphony, a work born out of tragedy and the loss of his teacher Antonín Dvorák in 1904. While composing the first part to a funeral symphony titled after the biblical angel of death who leads souls of deceased to the land of eternal blissfulness, Suk also lost his wife (Dvorák's favorite daughter Otilie). Suk's greatest work remains a masterpiece of the late-Romantic repertoire which can easily be compared in scope and emotional range to Bruckner and Mahler.

An expert in Czech music, Vladimir Ashkenazy conducts the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in a masterful and intense performance of this deeply moving work, which has never before been released in super audio quality.

Matti Salminen is one of the leading authentic bass singers of our time. The winner of two Grammies owes his legendary reputation to a uniquely powerful voice, and he continues to sing Wagner, Mozart and Mussorgsky roles at nearly every prominent opera house and concert hall in the world. Accompanied by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under its new chief conductor John Storgårds, Salminen is completely at home singing this music. Many of these songs about nature and love deserve greater attention or discovery, and this exceptional disc represents an ideal vehicle.

Image Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, The
Sergei Rachmaninov's setting of the Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom - Eastern Christianity's common Eucharistic service liturgy - is regarded as one of the great cornerstones of 20th-century sacred music. This work of symphonic proportions was composed in the summer of 1910, in less than three weeks. After its completion, Rachmaninov wrote to a friend that he had been carried away by the project and that it had been a long time since he had written music with such pleasure. The outcome was judged by contemporary church officials as "...absolutely wonderful, even too beautiful... it is not church music."

This a cappella choral work is performed by one of the foremost choruses in the world, the Latvian Radio Choir, under the direction of Sigvards Klava. The soloist roles are sung by Karlis Rutentals (tenor; celebrant priest) and Gundrars Dzilums (bass; deacon). The recording was made at the Riga Dome Cathedral in March/April 2008.
