Véronique Gens, soprano
Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire / John Axelrod

On this release famous soprano Véronique Gens performs Herminie and Les Nuits d'été by Hector Berlioz and Shéhérazade by Maurice Ravel with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire under the baton of its music director John Axelrod.

Véronique Gens is internationally recognised as one of the greatest sopranos. She has made a big career with baroque repertoire and Mozart, but French repertoire, especially Berlioz and Ravel, are "as natural to her as the air that she breathes". Her French remains a model of immaculate diction, fluid and luminous.

Having a very special relationship to Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été and Herminie, Véronique Gens combines them on this release with Shéhérazade by Ravel, which conjures up a totally different world. On this CD Herminie is released the first time with Véronique Gens.

The charismatic conductor John Axelrod is music director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire since 2009, following the philosophy of being "open to the world" by extraordinarily diverse repertoire choices and innovative programming. Also internationally he is a sought after conductor both for concerts and opera productions.

Founded in 1971, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, a "national" orchestra since 1996, is based in two cities, in Angers and Nantes. Today about 200 concerts attract yearly about 200,000 listeners, among them more than 10,000 subscribers.

"The art-bandits of the Kronos Quartet team up with the 'Hendrix of accordion' Pohjonen and a percussionist/electrickery specialist to produce a compelling, majestic, hypnotic work."

" aural journey that takes the listener on a rare adventure both poignant and chilling."

Samuli Kosminen, string & accordion samples, programming
Kimmo Pohjonen, vocals, accordion

Uniko features Grammy winning Kronos Quartet, Finnish accordion adventurer Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling guru Samuli Kosminen.

Commissioned by Kronos in 2003, Uniko is highlighted by Pohjonen's electrified and MIDI-fied accordion with Kosminen's electronic percussion devices which reproduce his own accordion samples and his samples of Kronos' instruments. These samples, together with live strings and electric accordion plus effects and manipulations create a new, multi-dimensional sound world.

Uniko received its live world première at the Helsinki Festival in 2004, with additional performances in Moscow and Molde (Norway), and three sellout concerts in New York at the 2007 BAM NEXT WAVE Festival. The album was subsequently recorded at Avatar Studios in NYC, produced by Iceland's Valgeir Sigurðsson who is known for his work with Björk and other outstanding, adventurous artists.

The New York Times reviewed the 2007 live performances in New York: "The music is sheer physicality... Uniko is like an ocean tide coming in. Big waves of sound build in complexity, animation and sometimes sheer frenzy, then abruptly retreat into small lyrical moments, amplified pizzicatos or buzzings by some huge and imaginary insect. Mr. Pohjonen, a virtuoso on an accordion wired for sound, guided things along and became so excited at the end that one worried about his well-being."

Image Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin

Ondine proudly presents a release of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin with Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch.

Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch is an unusually versatile violinist, predominantly known for her performance of period music but also excelling in many other styles and genres. Her position as concertmaster in the orchestra of Philippe Herreweghe is testament to her skill as an early music performer.

On the present disc Kaakinen-Pilch performs Bach's Sonatas and Partitas on a violin from the 17th century. This collection of works for solo violin was the pinnacle and culmination of the violin's 200-year history in its day.

Later this autumn Ondine will release a disc of Orchestral Suites by Christoph Graupner, featuring Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch as violinist and conductor.

GERALD FINLEY, bass-baritone

Gerald Finley's debut-album on Ondine is devoted to the music Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). It includes premiere recordings of orchestral versions of wartime works Six Romances on Verses by English Poets and the Scottish Ballad. The Six Romances was previously known only as a version for chamber orchestra arranged by the composer. However, the composer's original version for full orchestra was just recently discovered and is included here as a premiere recording.

Also included is a premiere recording of a very late Shostakovich masterpiece: the orchestral version of Suite on Poems by Michelangelo - sung for the first time in the original Italian. The work, composed in 1975, was one of the last pieces completed by Shostakovich.

Grammy-award winning Canadian baritone Gerald Finley has become one of the leading singers and dramatic interpreters of his generation, with award-winning performances and recordings on CD and DVD with major labels and performing at the world's major opera and concert venues in a wide variety of repertoire.

On this recording the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Thomas Sanderling, friend of the composer and a Shostakovich expert who has conducted award-winning Shostakovich premiere recordings. Sanderling was also personally involved in the process of the discovery of the versions included in this recording and conducted their premiere performances in connection to this recording.

The Philadelphia Orchestra
Christoph Eschenbach, conductor

It reveals today's Philadelphia Orchestra to be a juggernaut, with a big, dark sound built from the bottom up. (...) This German maestro delivers pure noble angrish and regret.
Roger Hecht, American Record Guide, March/April 2006

The first SACD of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach on Ondine hits the bull's eye. (...) The sound is stunning (...). The repertoire choice and its coupling are thrilling, as well as the performances. (...) Absolutely recommended.
Thomas Vitzthum,, March 9, 2006, Recommended*****

Powerfully introspective, (Martinu's Memorial) deserves greater familiarity, and this Eschenbach performance could make that happen.
Barrymore Laurence Scherer, The Wall Street Journal, February 25-26, 2006

The Philadelphia Orchestra's triumphant return to recording - Its insight, brilliance and musicality makes this Bartók Concerto for Orchestra the top choice.
Erik Levi, BBC Music Magazine, January 2006, Disc of the Month

This marks a new era for US orchestras' recorded futures.
James Jolly, Gramophone, January 2006, Editor's Choice

This release represents a most auspicious beginning to the relationship between Philadelphia and Ondine. I'm pleased (...) to be able to recommend it to you in the strongest possible terms.
David Hurwitz,, November 2005, Artistic Quality 10 / Sound Quality 10

Sometimes great things are worth waiting for... It has been nearly ten years since the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra made new recordings available on a regular and worldwide basis. This is Ondine's first release in its new groundbreaking partnership with The Philadelphia Orchestra, which calls for a minimum of three recordings to be released per year (for more information click here). The partnership agreement has attracted international media attention, including major articles throughout the international press (e.g. The Wall Street Journal, July 21, 2005; Gramophone, July 2005).

This release is also the first recording of conductor Christoph Eschenbach with The Philadelphia Orchestra, of which he became musical director in September 2003. Christoph Eschenbach holds a reputation as one of today's greatest champions of new and undiscovered repertoire. This CD combines a showpiece feature, Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, with two relatively unknown masterpieces, Klein's Partita for Strings and Martinu's Memorial to Lidice. The finest SACD recording technology highlights the unique spirit of a live-performance of this legendary orchestra, as well as its world-renowned 'Philadelphia Sound'. The live-captured concerts were highly acclaimed by The Philadelphia Inquirer (May 7, 2005).

This recording was released in 2005 in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. All three works presented on this disc were written by composers affected by the Nazi regime. Bartók wrote his Concerto for Orchestra (1943) during self-imposed US exile; Martinu composed Memorial to Lidice (1943) to honour the victims of the massacre of an entire village; the Partita for Strings, arranged in 1990 by the Czech composer Vojtech Saudek after the String Trio (1944), is Gideon Klein's last work which he completed shortly before he was transported to Auschwitz.

Politiken januar 2017

This double-CD release is a fourth volume in pianist Paavali Jumppanen’s ongoing recording cycle of the Beethoven piano sonatas.
This release includes Piano Sonatas Nos. 16–18 & 24–27 – written between 1801–02 and 1809–14, and belonging to the middle period of the composer’s oeuvre.

"Christian Tetzlaff is a strong advocate of this early Dvorák concerto; here he more than justifies his belief in it."
Gramophone (august 2016)

Ondine is proud the present this exciting program by the award-winning violinist Christian Tetzlaff. This new recording includes works for violin and orchestra by two Czech composers closely connected to each other, Antonín Dvorak and Josef Suk. Tetzlaff is accompanied by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds.

Christian Tetzlaff has been considered one of the world's leading international violinists for many years, and still maintains a most extensive performing schedule. Musical America named him "Instrumentalist of the Year" in 2005 and his recording of the violin concertos by Mendelssohn and Schumann, released on Ondine in 2011 (ODE 1195-2), received the "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik". Gramophone Magazine was choosing the recording of the Schumann Violin Sonatas with Lars Vogt (ODE 1205-2) as 'Disc of the Month' in January 2014. In addition, in 2015 ICMA awarded Christian Tetzlaff as the 'Artist of the Year'. His most recent recording on Ondine with Brahms' Trios (ODE 1271-2D) received a GRAMMY nomination.

Dvorak's Violin Concerto is a work which the composer worked and reworked probably more than any other composition. This technically demanding work for the soloist was originally dedicated to Joseph Joachim who, however, never played it in public. Nevertheless, after its publication by Simrock in April 1883 its fame spread like wildfire and it was adopted into the repertoire of countless leading violinists, to widespread acclaim from public and critics alike. Dvorak's Romance, Op. 11 is a delightful work written few years before the concerto and arranged for violin and orchestra by the composer.

Josef Suk, Dvorak's pupil and later his son-in-law, was a remarkable violinist. It is surprising that the wonderful Fantasy, Op. 24 written in 1902 - a neglected gem in the violin repertoire - is his only concertante work for the violin. This work requires a wide spectrum of violin technique such as double-stopping, playing on open strings, and virtuoso runs, which demand a delicate grasp of voice and sequence.

(Svenska Dagbladet)

Transfiguration is Camilla Nylund's much-awaited first album of arias. It captures the soprano's multi-faceted art with famous arias and scenes from operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner, including the grueling final scenes from Tristan und Isolde and from Salome. These arias reflect the lyrical and dramatic facets of the acclaimed singer's current roles at such venues as Staatsoper Dresden, Vienna State Opera, and Bayreuther Festspiele. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is here led by their chief conductor Hannu Lintu.

"Han utnyttjar i stället sin extrema förmåga att kontrollera pianoklangen på det mest subtila och skimrande vackra vis."

Olli Mustonen continues his acclaimed cycle of Beethoven Piano Concertos. In this second volume, the visionary Finnish pianist and conductor turns his talent to the Third Piano Concerto in C minor and the Piano Concerto which Beethoven arranged himself from Violin Concerto of 1906. While this Piano Concerto is seldom played in concert, with only a handful of recordings available, Mustonen regularly puts it on his programmes, and it has become one of his signature pieces.

As on the previous disc, Mustonen performs with the Tapiola Sinfonietta, with whom he has maintained close artistic ties for years, accompanying this Beethoven project with acclaimed tour performances in various European countries.

The booklet includes extensive liner notes written by noted Beethoven scholar and author of the new complete Piano Concerto Edition, Dr. Hans-Werner Küthen of the Beethoven-Archiv, Bonn.

Paavali Jumppanen's first solo piano disc on Ondine is a double-CD which contains five Piano Sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), including three early sonatas and the well-known Hammerklavier Sonata.

Jumppanen describes the project: "I had spent several years performing the complete cycle of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas and wanted to record that period of my artistic life. I see it as important that each generation of musicians present their views of this music. In so doing they participate in a kind of dialogue with the past generations of artists, whose recordings of Beethoven we so well know. Each time-period has its own soundscape and musical ideas."

Jumppanen is currently in the process of writing a book on Beethoven's Piano Sonatas. He has also written the liner notes for the new Ondine recording.

Image Sinfonia / Calmo / Ritirata Notturna di Madrid
VIRPI RÄISÄNEN, mezzosopraano
HANNU LINTU, kapellimestari

Teoksen solistina on hieno mezzospraano Virpi Räisänen, jonka debyyttilevytyksen Ondine julkaisi vuonna 2012 (ODE 1208-2).

Berion tunnetuin teos on vuosina 1968-69 valmistunut Sinfonia, jossa on mukana kahdeksan sähköisesti vahvistettua laulusolistia.

New Ondine release includes Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's (1644-1704) 16 Mystery Sonatas, also known as Rosary Sonatas. This set of virtuosic violin sonatas is Biber's most well-known work. They also serve as unique masterpieces of the Baroque violin repertoire. In the present recording violinist Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch is joined by the Finnish Baroque ensemble Battalia.

Biber's Mystery Sonatas feature 15 rosary mysteries from the life of Jesus and Virgin Mary. One of the most prominent characteristics of Biber's work is the use of various tunings, i.e. scordatura. Out of the sixteen sonatas, fourteen require the use of 'mistuned' violin.

Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch is nowadays in great demand as a leader of countless renowned early music ensembles and orchestras, performing music of the Baroque and symphonies of the age of Mozart and Schubert. Her solo repertoire includes works by Biber, Johann Sebastian Bach, and solo violin works of the 16th and 17th centuries. She also plays the viola and viola d'amore. Among her numerous tasks, she has also worked 10 years as the leader of Philippe Herreweghe's Collegium Vocale.

Kaakinen-Pichl has also recorded a double-CD of Johann Sebastian Bach's solo violin sonatas and partitas for Ondine.

Members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra:

Ondine is proud to present the latest release of violist David Aaron Carpenter, "the hottest violist of the 21st century" (Norman Lebrecht), and "stunningly talented" (The New Yorker).

Dreamtime features the titular solo viola work by Robert Mann (1920), founding member of the Juillard String Quartet and its first violinist for 52 years, as well as Frank Bridge's Lament. Frank Bridge (1879-1941) is one of the most outstanding composers for viola. The longest work on the disc is Brahms's Clarinet Quintet Op. 115 in the version for viola and string quartet.

The starting point for this release was an invitation David Aaron Carpenter received from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to perform a chamber music concert with some of their soloists. Brahms's Quintet and Bridge's Lament are live recording from this concert in February 2013.

David Aaron Carpenter was featured on the cover of The Strad magazine in August 2013 and, a few months earlier, was the subject of a three-page article in the New York Times. He is thrilled to release this latest recording with members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. "Making music with these incredible musicians," he says, "has been one of the inspiring highlights of my career."

David Aaron Carpenter's first recording, released in 2009 and featuring his own viola arrangement of the Elgar Cello Concerto (after Lionel Tertis) and the Schnittke concerto with Eschenbach was an international success, winning the coveted 'Editor's Choice' accolade from Gramophone. Further releases on Ondine include Berlioz's Harold in Italy and Paganini's Sonata per la Grand Viola with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a world premiere recording of the recently rediscovered Viola Concertos of "the Swedish Mozart" Joseph Martin Kraus.

Säveltäjä kirjoitti pianopreludiensa toisen vihkon vuosien 1912-13 aikana, ja ne edustavat säveltäjän myöhäisempään tyylillistä kehitystä. Suite bergamasque, joka julkaistiin vuonna 1905, kuuluu klassisen pianokirjallisuuden tunnetuimpiin teoksiin - se sisältää myös sävellyksen Clair de lune, todennäköisesti Debussyn tunnetuimman pianoteoksen.

Marita Viitasalo opiskeli Helsingissä professori Timo Mikkilän oppilaana. Hän jatkoi sittemmin opintojaan Roomassa (Rodolfo Caporali) sekä Wienissä (Dieter Weber). Viitasalo on palkittu konserttipianisti sekä arvostettu laulumusiikin säestäjä, joka on esiintynyt muun muassa Wienissä, Salzburgissa, Berliinissä, Pariisissa, Lontoossa, Edinburghissa sekä New Yorkissa. Viitasalo toimi vuosina 1981- 2010 Sibelius-Akatemian pianonsoiton professorina. 1980-luvulta lähtien Viitasalo on tehty lukuisia laulumusiikin levytyksiä. Soolotaiteilijana hän on tunnettu etenkin Debussyn, Ravelin ja Sibeliuksen musiikin tulkitsijana.

Marita Viitasalo sai Pro Finlandia -mitalin vuonna 2006.

David Aaron Carpenter (...) demonstrates a phenomenal technique - and more importantly, a rich and penetrating tone (...). Carpenter realises the concerto's bold personality with trenchant insight and self-belief.
The Scotsman, August 31, 2009

(...) brilliant recorded debut (...) a powerful, beautifully detailed, intimate account, intensifying the already notable vox humana quality of the (Elgar Concerto). (...) a searching, desolately heartfelt reading (of the Schnittke Concerto).
Paul Driver, The Times, August 30, 2009

If there's such a thing as an overnight-star violist, it's David Aaron Carpenter. (...) he makes an excellent case for the viola version of Elgar's concerto (...). Carpenter is in a league with the best (...). Much credit is no doubt to Christoph Eschenbach, who has recorded lots of Schnittke concertos with great conviction.
David Patrick Stearns, The Philadelphia Inquirer, August 23, 2009

(...) larger-than-life playing.
Andrew Clements, The Guardian, August 21, 2009

Viola players like to think that their instrument is a violin with a university education. But is has been much neglected for solo performances. Carpenter redresses the balance with a superb reading of Elgar's Cello Concerto. The deep warmth of his tone is exceptional, in the adagio especially. An added bonus is Schnittke's lively Viola Concerto.
Robert Spellman, Daily Express, August 21, 2009

23-year-old violist David Aaron Carpenter has recently emerged as one of the world's most promising young talents. This recording, his debut album, couples two concertos: a viola arrangement of Sir Edward Elgar's famous Cello Concerto and the Viola Concerto (1985) by Alfred Schnittke. Christoph Eschenbach leads the Philharmonia Orchestra. David Aaron Carpenter adapted much of the Elgar Concerto himself, using the well-known and Elgar-sanctioned arrangement completed by Lionel Tertis in 1930 as a basis.

Since making his orchestral debut in 2005 with The Philadelphia Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, David Aaron Carpenter has been performing with leading musicians and orchestras in the United States and Europe. In 2006, he won the the prestigious Walter E. Naumburg Viola Competition. In 2007, he became the first American and so far the youngest protégé for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative and the protégé of world-renowned violinist and violist Pinchas Zukerman. He was chosen among an international selection that included every violinist and violist of his generation.

David Aaron Carpenter has been acclaimed as producing, "a seductively rich sound and demonstrating both a forceful interpretive personality and remarkable control of his instrument," (The New York Times) and, "whose beautiful modulated tone makes a striking impression." (The Strad)

This release features the Ouverture de concert sur des thèmes dans le caractère populaire roumain Op. 32 and the Symphony No. 3 Op. 21 (with the Tampere Philharmonic Choir).

George Enescu is Romania's most notable composer - and one of the most neglected composers of the 20th century. This release demonstrates a master of great orchestral colour and impressive imagination.

Artistic director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra from 2009 till 2013, Hannu Lintu is a sought-after conductor and has an increasingly busy international career. From the season 2013/2014 onward he assumes the post of chief conductor of the Finnish RSO.

The collaboration between the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Hannu Lintu and Ondine has already produced releases of highest quality, among them lately the recording of Einojuhani Rautavaara's opera Kaivos, ODE 1174-2, awarded with a Grammy nomination - and a recording with works by young Finnish composer Uljas Pulkkis, ODE 1176-2, awarded with the Finnish Broadcasting Company's Disc of the Year 2011.

This release is the second of an Enescu cycle with Hannu Lintu. The third one - featuring Symphony No. 1 and the Sinfonia concertante - will follow 2014. The first release (ODE 1196-2), featuring Symphony No. 2 Op. 17 and the Chamber Symphony Op. 33, was highly praised by the critics and nominated for the Gramophone Awards 2013.

Image Symphonie Concertante / Symphony No. 1

The final release of the George Enescu (1881-1955) symphony cycle includes two neglected masterpieces: the 1st Symphony filled with youthful energy and the poetic and lyric Symphonie concertante for Cello and Orchestra. The soloist of the Symphony concertante is the award-winning cellist Truls Mørk.

Enescu wrote both of the works at a relatively young age: the Symphonie concertante was written at the age of 20 and the 1st Symphony was premiered when the composer was 25 years of age. Even so, Enescu had already created himself an impressive career as a composer with several large-scale works.

The Ondine recordings with Hannu Lintu and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra have proved to be extremely successful. The first release of the Enescu cycle received Gramophone Awards Nomination 2013. Hannu Lintu and the orchestra also received GRAMMY nomination for their recording of Rautavaara's Kaivos Opera.

Daniel Reuss, conductor

This CD release showcases a cross section of choral and orchestral works by Erkki-Sven Tüür, who with Arvo Pärt counts among the most popular Estonian composers internationally.

The central piece on this disc is the world première recording of Awakening (Ärkamine), written in 2011. It features the acclaimed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Sinfonietta Riga under the direction of Daniel Reuss. According to Tüür, Awakening contemplates the springtime mystery of nature's rebirth, embracing both the Christian conception of the world and the rather more pantheistic comprehension of creation peculiar to ancient Estonians.

Also included is The Wanderer's Evening Song, a choral setting of poems by Ernst Enno and written for the EPCC's 20th anniversary in 2001. Insula deserta, for string orchestra, became Tüür's first great success outside of Estonia, when first performed in Finland in 1989.

"...One could hardly ask for better performers in this repetoire than the Latvian Radio Choir under the inspired direction of Sigvards Klava, and Ondine's recording, made in St John's Church in Riga, is a model og clarity. A superb release."
Gramophone (August 2016)

Eriks Ešenvalds (b. 1977) is one the leading Latvian composers of vocal music and one of the leading Latvian composers of his generation. This recording features new works by the composer with the prestigious Latvian Radio Choir conducted by Sigvards Klava.

The title piece of the recording is a 30-minute Passion according to St Luke, a work in eight movements completed by the composer in 2014. The work holds a special place in the composer’s repertoire as the first Passion by the celebrated composer of several choral works. The music is sumptuous, rich, and powerful, with heroic, picturesque, passionate, and ethereal elements.

A Drop in The Ocean (2006) is an impressive vocal work dedicated to Mother Teresa while The First Tears (2014) is based on an Inuit legend. Litany of the Heavens (2011) is a mysterious and magical work based on a religious poem by Fricis Barda.

Latvian Radio Choir’s previous releases on Ondine have been highly successful. For instance, the recording of Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil (ODE 1206-5) was chosen as the Record of the Month, Editor’s Choice and received a nomination in the Gramophone Awards in 2013. Also their most recent release of choral works by Valentin Silvestrov (ODE 1266-5) received Gramophone Editor’s Choice.

Five of the works include solo parts which are sung by two notable Latvian singers, Aleksandrs Antonenko and Ieva Ezeriete.

Latvian Radio Choir's previous releases on Ondine have been highly successful. For instance, the recording of Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil (ODE 1206-5) was chosen as the Record of the Month, Editor's Choice and received a nomination in the Gramophone Awards in 2013.

The title work of the recording, Sviridov's Sacred Love, is a unique example of aesthetic and beautiful vocal writing and has also great potential for radio play.

The Latvian Radio Choir is regarded as one of the top professional chamber choirs in Europe. The repertoire extends from the Renaissance to the present day. The Choir regularly commissions works from leading Latvian composers.

Sigvards Klava, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Latvian Radio Choir since 1992, is one of Latvia's most prolific choral conductors. Apart of the standard repertoire he has conducted most premières of new choral works by Latvian composers.

Finnish Baroque Orchestra's second release of Christoph Graupner's (1683-1760) music continues to reveal delightful masterpieces by the Baroque master, who during his lifetime was even more well-known than his colleague Johann Sebastian Bach. After the acclaimed release of Graupner's orchestral works (ODE 1220-2; The Finnish broadcasting company YLE Record of the Year 2013), this new album focuses on some of the chamber works by Graupner - the Trio Sonatas.

Graupner was extremely productive as a composer, with a catalogue of over 2'000 works varying from orchestral works to cantatas, concertos and chamber music. He also possessed a unique personal style of writing music and often favoured certain rarer instruments in his works. Among these are the viola d'amore as well as the chalumeau, both instruments being heard also on this disc.

From his contemporaries Graupner's music stands out with its exceptional command of melody and harmony.

"...The title work, to English-language poems by Joseph Brodsky, may be the most powerful; sample its titular first movement (track 11) with its soaring soprano lines for a taste of Grigorjeva's personal adaptation of a Pärt influence. The Lament for recorder, originally recorded for flute, but extremely nifty in this version that makes use of the recorder's distinctive attack, is also unusual. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Hillier's Theatre of Voices are in fine precise form, and they are ably backed by Ondine's engineering team, working in Tallinn's sonically impressive Niguliste Church. A fine excursion through new choral trends in Eastern Europe."
All Music (April 2016)

"This new album from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir reinforces their position as one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles. Paul Hillier directs them through a deeply satisfying survey of music by the Ukrainian-born Estonian composer Galina Grigorjeva (b1962). Stylistically, she follows in the long shadow of Rachmaninov, bracing an essential serenity with the subtlest of richer harmonic tints, while stretching her singers both emotionally as well as in terms of their tessitura (oh, those basses!). She is the mistress of cadential suspense, a modernist who respects the past..."
Gramomphone Malcolm Riley (april 2016)

"There are pieces for vocals and string quartet, mixed choir and male choir.
The music sounds as if she pays utmost attention to detail but it also flows well, too, and there’s a lot of silence, which can work effectively if used properly."
Cron Review Corner (februar 2016)

"...This is a remarkable release of some of the most strikingly effective choral music I’ve heard for quite some time. The recorded acoustic helps things hang together, but as you would expect the Estonian singers inhabit and deliver this music with tremendous conviction, and with the added contrasts of instrumental contributions this is also a well-considered programme that works superbly as a breathtaking listening experience. I for one am truly grateful to have been introduced to Galina Grigorjeva’s music, and will be sure to look out for her name in future."
WebMusic International Dominy Clements (April 2016)

Ondine is proud to release this disc of choral works dedicated to Estonian composer Galina Grigorjeva (b. 1962). The works, recorded in the presenceGalina Grigorjeva, originally born in Ukraine, is known for her deeply spiritual and timeless sacred vocal works.

The title piece of the disc, Nature Morte, is a powerful spiritual work based on poetry by Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996).

Some elements of folk music can also be heard in the vocal suite Svjatki which uses Russian folk texts. Other vocal pieces on the disc follow traditional Latin and Slavic liturgical texts.

The recordings by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir have gathered positive reviews in the worldwide press. This recording is the fifth release by the choir on Ondine.

Image Piano Concerto / Sinfonietta
Finnish composer Kimmo Hakola was recently portrayed by The New York Times as, "possessed of a joyful, mischievous spirit." The article described his music as "mixing together shapely lyricism, atonality, quirky folkishness and an almost hedonistic approach to timbre and rhythm" - an ideal characterization of the monumental Piano Concerto, which is the main feature on this new CD release in celebration of Hakola's 50th birthday.

The 55-minute work is cast in no less than nine stirring movements, which combine scintillating virtuosity with powerful emotions and humor. With hints of jazz and folk music, in addition to parodist episodes of serial music, Hakola here produces unorthodox and accessible classical music at its best. Coupled with the Piano Concerto is the Sinfonietta for orchestra, a 15-minute work of relentless virtuoso energy.

The acclaimed young Finnish pianist Henri Sigfridsson is accompanied by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and chief conductor John Storgårds who have made award-winning recordings of contemporary music.

Ondine proudly presents world première recordings of two Guitar Concertos: one by Kimmo Hakola and the other by Toshio Hosokawa. These are performed by Timo Korhonen - the guitarist for whom the concertos were written - and the Oulu Symphony Orchestra conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Kimmo Hakola's Guitar Concerto is a colourful exploration of themes connected to both medieval and modern Southern Spain and Northern Africa

Toshio Hosokawa takes a more meditative approach as he searches for symbolic universal harmony in his music.

Timo Korhonen is one of the world's most acclaimed guitarists. He has premiered over 40 new works during his career, and has made several critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali has recently made a number of significant international debuts. He participated in the Dudamel Fellowship Programme in 2011/12, and will start his tenure as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2013. He is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra. This CD is his debut disc.

The Oulu Symphony Orchestra has developed considerably over the last few years under Anna-Maria Helsing. Johannes Gustavsson will continue this development from this autumn when he takes over as Chief Conductor.

Superbly played and recorded works from a driving force in Finnish music. (...) Hakola's present style is broadly tonal and incorporates elements from a wide range of styles, from the avant-garde to Hollywood-like sentimentality to oriental world music. It is a tribute to his compositional skill and the force of his creative personality that he is able to hold such a bewildering array together. (...) With demonstration-quality sound, this is all great fun.

For his second CD release, 25-year-old New York-born violist David Aaron Carpenter is joined by Vladimir Ashkenazy who leads the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Together they perform the Symphony with Viola obbligato, Harold in Italy, which Berlioz originally wrote on a commission from Paganini. The present recording features, for the first time, a more virtuoso soloist part written for Paganini.

The coupling is a showpiece, which Nicolò Paganini wrote after rejecting his earlier Berlioz commission; "The Sonata per la Gran Viola displays the highest virtuosic writing for this instrument," says David Aaron Carpenter, who defines his mission as focusing attention on the viola as a great solo string instrument in its own right.

Also included is Berlioz's cheerful Overture to the opera Béatrice et Bénédict.

Recipient of the 2011 Leonard Bernstein Award (on August 27, 2011) and winner of the 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he has emerged as one of the world's most promising young artists. In 2006, he won the prestigious Walter E. Naumburg Viola Competition and in 2007, he became protégé for The Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, being the youngest in this mentorship programme's history. David Aaron Carpenter has been the protégé of several major international musical figures, such as Pinchas Zukerman, Yuri Bashmet and Christoph Eschenbach.

This release follows on the great success of David's debut recording, with the Phllharmonia Orchestra and conductor Christoph Eschenbach, of the Elgar and Schnittke concertos (ODE 1153-2).

Image Symphonie Mathis der Maler & Symphonie in Es

Ondine's successful Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) recordings with the NDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Christoph Eschenbach continue with another release featuring two major symphonic works by the composer: Symphonie 'Mathis der Maler' and Symphonie in Es.

The orchestra's and Christoph Eschenbach's previous Hindemith release together with Midori won a Grammy Award in 2014.

The 'Mathis der Maler' Symphony is based on an opera that treats the life of the Renaissance painter Mathias Grünewald. Hindemith started to work on the symphony already prior to the completion of the opera. The symphony was premiered with great success by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Wilhelm Furtwängler on 12 March 1934. This performance was the last premiere of an orchestral work by Hindemith in Germany before the National Socialist regime issued a general performance prohibition applying to his works in 1936.

Hindemith wrote his Symphonie in Es during his exile in the United States in 1940. The Symphony is absolute music in the tradition of the four-movement symphony of Beethoven and the romantic period. The work was premiered by Dimitri Mitropoulos who wrote to the composer: "The performance of your symphony was for me one of the highest artistic moments of my career."

The work remains one of Hindemith's key masterpieces and Glenn Gould once called it, "the greatest song cycle ever written." This recording features Hindemith's revised 1948 version.

Soile Isokoski is hailed as one of the finest singers in the world ("Isokoski's lyric soprano is like liquid gold." - David L. Kirk, Fanfare Magazine, March/April 2009). Her CDs for Ondine have been praised as top-choice recordings and garnered the highest distinctions at the BBC Music Magazine Awards, Gramophone Awards and MIDEM Classical Awards.

Jukka Tiensuu is regarded as one of the most fascinating Finnish living composer along with Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kaija Saariaho, and Magnus Lindberg. His first clarinet concerto Puro, written for Kari Kriikku in 1989, has since known a phenomenal success, with fifty acclaimed performances around the globe.

Finland's internationally most successful movie music composer Tuomas Kantelinen has written the music for more than 30 films since the mid-1990s, including Puhdistus (Purge, directed by Antti Jokinen), Äideistä parhain (Mother of Mine, Klaus Härö), Mindhunters (Renny Harlin) and Mongol (Serge Bodrov). Kantelinen has received several awards at home and abroad for his film scores, including the Finnish Jussi Award for Lunastus (The Redemption, 1997) and Rukajärven tie (Ambush, 1999).

With The Snow Queen, the Finnish National Ballet scored a hit. This success was due not only to Andersen's wonderful story and its brilliant staging but also to the music of composer Tuomas Kantelinen. He says he wanted "to write music that is melodic, beautiful and accessible, as its principal function is to put viewers of all ages into a cheerful Christmas mood. It is a deliberate nod towards the tradition of Christmas ballets for the whole family, such as Nutcracker. I had a great deal of fun creating character dance pastiches that illustrate the conceptions that people have of the musical styles of various countries."

In addition to film scores, Kantelinen has written music for TV series and ads. His opera Paavo Suuri (Paavo the Great) was performed at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki in 2000 and broadcast around Europe on the Arte TV channel. He has also written a Piano Concerto, a Guitar Concerto and works for choir, symphony orchestra and chamber orchestra.

Tuomas Kantelinen is at his best when shifting chameleon-like between musical styles and colours and writing music that elicits a genuine emotional response. For this timeless tale, he created a musical score that is at once nostalgic and contemporary.

The programme included favourite songs from the Great American Songbook and Brazilian Bossa Nova. All songs were arranged by Finnish jazz icon Kirmo Lintinen who, together with his band and the vocal trio How Many Sisters, backed Karita Mattila as musical director, conductor and pianist throughout the evenings. Set and costumes were designed by Markku Piri who developed the original artistic concept together with Karita Mattila. Stage and choreography were devised by Tiina Lindfors. Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996) is considered "Finland's most significant composer after Sibelius" (American Record Guide). However, he still awaits discovery among many lovers of accessible contemporary music. Sakari Oramo and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, unrivaled champions of Finnish late 20th-century music (Classic FM Gramophone Best Contemporary Award and BBC Music Magazine Best Première Award in 2006 for a Magnus Lindberg disc), have taken up this task with a complete Kokkonen symphonies cycle: The benchmarking first volume (Symphonies 3&4, coupled with Cello Concerto) has been unanimously hailed by the press as a "must-have disc" (Fanfare magazine). On this new release, they perform the first two symphonies, coupled with Opus sonorum for orchestra. Written in the years following Sibelius's death in 1957, these masterpieces reveal Kokkonen's affinity with the music of J.S. Bach (1st symphony) and his full exploration of expressive tonal colours (Opus sonorum - "work of sounds").

This Erich W. Korngold disc couples the monumental Symphony in F sharp with the world première recording of a rare discovery piece, Tänzchen im alten Stil.

The 50-minute Symphony in F sharp major is Korngold's only symphony, written in a late Romantic style. Composed between 1947-1952, it is dedicated to the memory of Franklin D. Roosevelt (who died in 1945). Dimitri Mitropoulos wrote in 1959 about this masterpiece: "All my life I have searched for the perfect modern work. In this symphony I have found it."

Tänzchen im alten Stil is an 8-minute piece which 19-year-old Korngold wrote in 1917, while doing his military service in World War I. The work fell into oblivion and was given its (supposedly) world premiere no earlier than 2007, at the Jyväskylä Festival, Finland; the performance was led by John Storgårds, who on this CD conducts the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

World première recording - The opera was commissioned by the City of Oulu in northern Finland as part of its 400th anniversary and premiered there on September 16th, 2005. The recording features leading soloists from the Finnish National Opera, as well as the ensembles of the premiere performance. The libretto by Juha Seppälä combines true historical drama with a fictitious mismatched love story. The story, in two acts, traces the life of Swedish historian Johannes Messenius, a popular lecturer at the university of Upsala, who fell foul of powerful people and was sent into exile. Messenius and his wife Lucia spent twenty years as prisoners at Kajaani castle in eastern Finland, where he wrote his most lauded works. He died in Oulu less than a year after his release, in 1636.

This production is very much on the highest level, in terms of vocal performances, sound, and technique. (...) It aims at a general audience without being opportunistic.

Image A Due
This CD contains Finnish contemporary duo music specially written for clarinetist Kari Kriikku and cellist Anssi Karttunen. The unheard-of and fascinating combination of these two melody instruments has no classical precedents and was introduced into Finnish contemporary music in the 1980s, thanks to the featured performers and their close contacts to Finnish composers.

The performers are two of Finland’s foremost instrumentalists: clarinetist Kari Kriikku - an acclaimed champion of contemporary music and winner of both the Classic FM Gramophone Award 2006 and the BBC Music Magazine Award 2006 (Lindberg: Clarinet Concerto; ODE 1038-2) - and cellist Anssi Karttunen, who has equal credentials as a dedicatee of works by Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, Rolf Wallin and Tan Dun.

Kari Kriikku is performing on clarinet (1, 2, 4-7, 9, 11) and bass clarinet (3, 8, 10, 12).

Toivo Kuula (1883-1918), a Finnish composer with significant melodic gifts and a private pupil of Sibelius, is best-known as a tragic national-romantic composer of vocal music. Although Kuula's focus was in vocal music he took considerable interest in writing orchestral music and in his orchestral works he is often a conjurer of powerful Nordic moods. Kuula had also aims of becoming a symphonist but his untimely death left the project unfinished.

This CD features three works by Magnus Lindberg from 1998-2005, recorded here for the first time. Sakari Oramo leads the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Esa Tapani performs the solo part of the horn concerto Campana in aria. Magnus Lindberg is one of Finland's leading international contemporary composers, together with Kaija Saariaho and Einojuhani Rautavaara. Commissions from the world's leading orchestras, such as The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic and his many recordings on Ondine and other major labels have helped to position him at the forefront of orchestral composition. Energy, colour and a thrilling density of material are the hallmarks of his recent style and the the works recorded here for the first time offer entrancing examples thereof. This disc follows on from the great success of the previous Clarinet Concerto recording, which was named best contemporary / première recording both at the Gramophone Awards and the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2006 (ODE 1038-2). It also featured conductor Sakari Oramo and the Finnish RSO who are recognized experts in the field of their compatriot's music.

Kari Kriikku (clarinet), Anssi Karttunen (cello), Magnus Lindberg (piano)

Ondine continues its series of recordings of Magnus Lindberg's music - this time chamber music from the 2000s.

Magnus Lindberg has written many pieces for clarinettist Kari Kriikku and cellist Anssi Karttunen, two important figures on the contemporary music scene in Finland.

The Clarinet Trio - including fine reminiscences of Brahms and Ravel - now brings these two musicians together, joined by the composer himself on the piano.

Kari Kriikku has premiered all of Magnus Lindberg's works for clarinet. His recording of the Clarinet Concerto earned him both a Gramophone Award and a BBC Music Magazine Award in 2006.

Anssi Karttunen is a passionate advocate for contemporary music. 24 concertos have been written for him and he premiered Magnus Lindberg's cello concerto.

...Collaborations between composers and clarinettists have given rise to some of the finest music: Mozart and Anton Stadler, Weber and Heinrich Baermann, Brahms and Richard Mühlfeld. Now, in Kari Kriikku, Magnus Lindberg has found his own clarinet muse.
Lindberg was one of the leading lights, alongside Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jouni Kaipainen and Kaija Saariaho, of the generation of Finnish composers who came to prominence in the 1980s. It was while working among such colleagues as these with the Toimii and Avanti! ensembles that Lindberg encountered Kriikku, and the clarinettist has since been the recipient of a string of works by Lindberg including Quintetto dell'estate (1979), Linea d'ombra (1981), Ablauf (1983-88), UR (1986), Duo concertante (1990-92), Steamboat Bill Jr (1990) and Away (1994) – works that suit the many facets of Kriikku's talents, ranging from the stunningly virtuoso to the overtly theatrical.
The Clarinet Concerto was composed in 2002, Lindberg delivering sections of the score to Kriikku by boat from his island retreat. Playful and aggressive sound worlds and allusions to Debussy and jazz styles come together as it builds in intensity towards its passionate conclusion. Earlier musics also inform the concerto's companion pieces on the disc: Gran Duo harks back to Mozart's Gran partita and Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments, while Chorale was composed to share the bill with Berg's Violin Concerto and quotes from the same Bach chorale, Es ist genug.
The disc is an all-Finnish product. Ondine has brought together Lindberg and Kriikku with the Finnish Radio SO and Sakari Oramo, reflecting the vibrancy of musical life that continues to flourish there...

Image Al largo / Cello Concerto No. 2 / Era

Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) is among the most important European contemporary voices in classical music. This recording includes some of Lindberg's most recent orchestral works written during and after his composer-in-residence years with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (2009-12). Lindberg is continuing as the composer-in-residence with the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2014-17.

This recording includes Cello Concerto No. 2 performed by Anssi Karttunen as the soloist and two orchestral works performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conducted by its chief-conductor Hannu Lintu.

Al largo is an extensive work with a duration of over 20 minutes written and dedicated for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Alan Gilbert. Despite of its title Lindberg himself considers it as the fastest music he has ever written. The title suggest that under the busy surface a large structure is slowly shaping itself.

Cello Concerto No. 2 was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Concerto is re-written, orchestrated and extended version of a chamber work, Santa Fe Project (Konzerstück), which was written in 2006. The Cello Concerto was premiered by Anssi Karttunen, who also plays as soloist in this premiere recording of the work.

The final work on the disc, Era, was commissioned by the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra for its 125th Anniversary in 2013. This work was inspired by the music written during a golden age in music in Europe, just before the outbreak of World War I. The work evolves towards opulent sonorities and bold culminations. The work, also receiving here its premiere recording, has been described as a tone poem, even though it has no narrative content.

Image Paganini Variations & Paganini Rhapsody

Tzimon Barto is recognised as one of the foremost American pianists of his generation. His new double-CD for Ondine features Paganini variations by three composers, Liszt, Brahms and Lutoslawski, as well as the popular Paganini Rhapsody by Rachmaninov.

Tzimon Barto is known for his dashing pianistic virtuosity and for his unique artistic personality. Barto also offers enchanting poetic moments on the keyboard, an aspect which is clearly manifested also in this present recording.

Niccolò Paganini (1782-1840) was a sensational violinist and composer of his day who inspired many 19th and 20th century composers to write variations based on his 24 Caprices Opus 1, originally written for the solo violin.

In this recording Christoph Eschenbach conducts the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra in Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody. After many years as music director of both the Orchestre de Paris (2000-2010) and the Philadelphia Orchestra (2003-2008), Christoph Eschenbach has held the dual post of music director of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington since September 2010. He has also made numerous recordings both as a pianist and as a conductor. The Schlewig-Holstein Festival Orchestra was founded by Leonard Bernstein

The new recording is Tzimon Barto's 5th release on the Ondine label.

Image Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 / Okon Fuoko Suite

This new release completes Ondine's recording cycle of Leevi Madetoja's (1887-1947) symphonies. The disc features his Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3, and an orchestral suite drawn from the Asian influenced ballet pantomime Okon Fuoko.

Leevi Madetoja, a contemporary of Jean Sibelius, found a voice for himself where the elegiac nature of the landscape and folk songs of his native province of Ostrobothnia merged with a French elegance. Madetoja's First Symphony, premiered in 1916, reflects influences from Tchaikovsky and Sibelius but is a remarkably original achievement for a first venture into the genre.

Madetoja's Third Symphony found its genesis in France, where the composer travelled with his wife in spring 1925. In comparison to the first two symphonies, it has been considered more restrained and subtle, but also more nuanced, richer in content and more ambiguous in expression.

Madetoja reveals a surprisingly modern aspect of himself as a composer in his orchestral suite from the ballet pantomime Okon Fuoko. The work, with clear affinities to Ravel and Prokofiev, demonstrate that new international trends in the 1920s did not pass Madetoja without leaving traces.

John Storgårds, one of Finland's exceptional artists, has taken the classical music world by storm in recent decades. Since 2008, Storgårds has been Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of BBC Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012. The latest release of works by Rautavaara (ODE 1178-2), featuring Truls Mørk, Collin Currie, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and John Storgårds, received a Gramophone Award in 2012.

This recording completes Ondine's cycle of all the three symphonies by Madetoja with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of John Storgårds. The first release, containing the recording of Symphony No. 2, was released in January 2013.

HANNU LINTU, conductor

This new release by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by their Chief Conductor Hannu Lintu includes a true orchestral classic: Mahler's 1st Symphony.

On this recording the symphony is combined with an original 2nd movement, Blumine, later abandoned by the composer after three performances of the symphony.

Mahler wrote his 1st Symphony during 1887 and 1888. However, he revised the work until 1896. Mahler gave the work the title 'Titan' based on a novel by Jean Paul, although Mahler denied the work of being programmatic. The symphony is one of the most often played works by Mahler.

The recent recordings of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra together with their Chief Conductor Hannu Lintu on Ondine have gathered excellent reviews in the international press.

Image Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) (2 CD)
One of the great Mahler conductors of our time, Christoph Eschenbach has a particularly close connection to the spiritual spheres of pain and relief in the music of Gustav Mahler. His recording of the Sixth Symphony, with The Philadelphia Orchestra, was hailed by Gramophone as "maybe the Sixth of first choice, sonically and interpretatively," and stated, "No Mahlerian will want to miss it!" This new release features the Second Symphony ('Resurrection'), which was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. The famous use of a chorus as the centerpiece of the Finale has often invited comparison with Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The celestial Urlicht song of the fourth movement is performed by the celebrated mezzo-soprano Yvonne Naef. This is the eighth CD to be released under the "formidable Ondine-Eschenbach-Philadelphia partnership" (Gramophone) which began in 2005, and has produced discs that have been honored with accolades including BBC Music Magazine's Disc of the Month, Gramophone's "Editor's Choice," The New York Times' "Top Ten Recordings of the Year," and the German Record Critics' Award, among others.

"Beautifully evocative"
The Guardian September 2016

This Ondine release features world prèmiere recordings of three orchestral works by Erkki Melartin (1875–1937), one of the most influential Finnish composers – and symphonists – of the early 20th century. This programme is performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under their chiefconductor Hannu Lintu.

Traumgesicht is an Impressionistic large-scale symphonic poem written for Alexander Siloti in 1910. In later years Melartin considered it as one of his most important works. Traumgesicht differs from the National Romantic image generally associated with Melartin. It could be described as progressive: the composer was obviously up to date with recent trends, since influences from composers such as Richard Strauss, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov and Scriabin may be detected. The work lied unperformed for 81 years until Hannu Lintu brought it back to light by conducting it in Helsinki in 2013.

Marjatta (1914), A Legend from Kalevala, is based on the Finnish national epic and bears hints to Sibelius’ Luonnotar and Melartin’s Aino opera. Both Sibelius’ Luonnotar and Melartin’s Marjatta were written for the same singer, Aino Ackté, in mind. Luonnotar and Marjatta can with good reason be regarded as parallel works or siblings, even though they are very dissimilar in musical style. The solo part of the work is here sung by the celebrated soprano Soile Isokoski.

Music for the ballet The Blue Pearl, completed in 1930, was one of the last major works written by Melartin and, surprisingly, the first full-length ballet written in Finland. Although the ballet music was popular in its own time the work gradually fell into oblivion. Conductor Hannu Lintu has adapted the music of the ballet into a 8-movement concert suite.

The recent recordings by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu on Ondine have been a fruitful collaboration gathering excellent reviews in the international press.

Image Elämälle. Songs by Oskar Merikanto
Jorma Hynninen is one of the most celebrated Finnish vocal artists of all time. This new disc contains the legendary baritone’s very personal account of songs by the compatriot Oskar Merikanto (1868–1924), which are truly worth a discovery! Many of the 25 songs remain to this day among the all-time favourite Finnish songs of any genre (such as the title song of this disc, Elämälle – ‘To life’).

Oskar Merikanto was equally popular among the large Finnish audience of his time as was Jean Sibelius. He was the co-founder of what would become the Finnish National Opera and composed major contributions to the song and opera genre of the late romantic era in Finland. A real master of melody who incorporated elements of folk music into his works, Oskar Merikanto rightfully provokes comparisons with composers of such genius as Schubert and Mahler as a song writer.

Jorma Hynninen has contributed not only to a renewal in the art of interpreting solo songs but also to the creation of a number of new contemporary operas by Rautavaara and Sallinen, to name but two composers. His greatest musical love though has always been Lied, a genre on which he successfully concentrates on this new recording. His dark, dramatic and dynamic voice fits the music ideally. Pianist Ilkka Paananen has appeared numerous times together with Jorma Hynninen and is an equally appreciated Lied partner of Elina Garanca, Dilbèr, Matti Salminen and Gabriel Suovanen.

The CD booklet includes liner notes and the song lyrics in the original Finnish and in English translation.

Image Four Serious Songs; Clarinet Sonata No. 1; Weites
This recording includes a fascinating program: Luciano Berio's iconic adaptation of Johannes Brahms' Clarinet Sonata No. 1 combined with Detlev Glanert's recent arrangement of Brahms' late vocal masterpiece, Four Serious Songs. Also included is Glanert's new orchestral work Weites Land written in the spirit of Brahms. This disc includes as its soloists award-winning clarinetist Kari Kriikku and German baritone Michael Nagy. This is the second release of Estonian conductor Olari Elts together with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Detlev Glanert was, like Brahms, born in Hamburg. A pupil of Diether de la Motte and Hans Werner Henze, Glanert has long felt a deep connection with Brahms' music through "a specific North German tradition, in which I believe myself to be connected with Brahms, to do with a melancholy in his pieces, with a certain severity." Luciano Berio was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986 to provide an orchestral version of the first of the two late sonatas Brahms composed in 1894, two years prior to the Serious Songs. Berio created a 25-minute concerto, although retaining the designation "Sonata". Berio's treatment of Brahms' was highly respectful and straightforward and the solo part is almost identical with the origina lsonata.

Image Piano Works - Neglected Treasures

Second release on Ondine by the award-winning pianist Anastasia Injushina features some of the lesser-known aspects of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) piano music. Injushina is particularly known for the poetry and sensitivity in her playing, which makes Mozart's music, among others, a perfect choice for repertoire for her.

During the 1780s Mozart became deeply interested in Baroque music. In Vienna he took actively part in Sunday meetings arranged by van Swieten where the music of the old masters, such as Handel and Bach, were played. As a result the influence of Baroque music became visible in some of Mozart's works which are heard on this disc.

The Suite in C was influenced by Handel's piano suites. Prelude and Fugue is a great example of Mozart's interest in the art of the Fugue and the music of Bach. The Sonata movement KV 312 and Andante in F major for Small Mechanical Organ are among Mozart's last completed pieces. Twelve Variations in C major on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman" is a delightful piece based on the famous children's song Twinkle, twinkle, little star.

Image Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 3 & 4
This awaited release is the first disc in a series of Olli Mustonen and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hannu Lintu performing the Piano Concertos by Sergei Prokofiev. Without a doubt some of the most substantial twentieth century masterworks, Prokofiev’s piano concertos prove the composer’s brilliant piano skills. The composer premiered his First Piano Concerto in 1914. The Third Piano Concerto is the most popular of Prokofiev’s concertos. The piece took several years to complete, and premiered in Chicago in 1921. Prokofiev’s Fourth Piano Concerto (for the left hand) is the most rarely heard of the three concertos featured on this recording. He wrote the piece in 1931 for pianist Paul Wittgenstein, but the work wasn’t performed until 1956. Olli Mustonen is sought after by orchestras all over the world, and he has performed and recorded with such groups as the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and The Royal Concertgebouw. His recent collaborations with the Finnish Radio Symphony have garnered excellent reviews.

The Sonata No. 10 is regarded as one of Scriabin's greatest works. The collection culminates with the pianistic tour-de-force of Vers la flamme, an astonishing piece famously championed by the late Vladimir Horowitz.

Olli Mustonen has been hailed by The Sunday Times as, "a living dream of pianism, having broken through an expressive barrier that other players do not know exists."

Mikhail Pletnev, conductor

This CD features star conductor Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra with the complete ballet music of The Nutcracker by Peter Tchaikovsky.

Composed in 1892, this masterpiece of Russian orchestral music is one of the last major compositions of Peter Tchaikovsky and perhaps the crowning achievement of his artistic output. Based on a French adaptation, by Alexandre Dumas père, of E.T.A. Hoffmann's adult fairy-tale Nussknacker and Mausekönig (The Nutcracker and the Mouse King), the libretto by Ivan Alexandrovich Vsevolozsky and Marius Petipa tells the fantasy story of a young German girl who dreams of Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King.

The Russian National Orchestra and Mikhail Pletnev's second CD release on Ondine follows on the great success of their earlier recording of the complete Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky (ODE 1167-2D). Founded by Mikhail Pletnev in 1990, the RNO has quickly reached a position at the top of international orchestras.

This CD was recorded and mastered by Emil Berliner Studios.

Latvian Radio Choir / Sigvards Klava

This CD presents a cross section of a cappella choral works by cult composer Peteris Vasks, performed by the acclaimed Latvian Radio Choir under the direction of Sigvards Klava.

Following on from their successful recording of liturgical Vasks compositions ("Beautifully performed, a rare outing for Vask's choral music" - Gramophone) (ODE 1106-2), the Latvian Radio Choir once again draws on the Baltic countries' extraordinary choir music tradition, focusing here on secular repertoire.

The title piece on this disc is Plainscapes, written in 2002 for mixed choir, solo violin (Sandis Šteinbergs) and solo cello (Guna Aboltina) on commission from violinist Gidon Kremer; meditating on the inspiring beauty of the Latvian lowlands, it uses vocalises to celebrate nature's cyclic miracles. The Sad Mother (1980/91) and Summer (1978) are written for female choir. In Birth (2008) a mixed choir, together with a solo percussion (Janis Kokins), pays tribute to the sun as a symbol for life.

The present release features world premiere recordings of Our Mother's Names (1977/2003), The Sad Mother (1980/91), Summer (1978), and Small, Warm Holiday (1988).

Ondine's releases of Peteris Vasks' music have garnered several awards, including a 2004 Cannes Classical Disc of the Year Award for the Second Symphony (ODE 1005-2).

VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY, conductor & piano

Ondine releases a new recording of Sergei Rachmaninov's (1873-1943) rarely heard unfinished opera Monna Vanna. In this recording the opera is performed on a newer edition by Gennadi Belov and conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy, an iconic artist for many decades and an expert in Russian music.

Second part of this disc consists of seven songs by Rachmaninov (including the hauntingly beautiful Vocalise), featuring, as Ashkenazy's personal wish, the Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski accompanied on the piano by Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Rachmaninov wrote the 1st Act of his Monna Vanna opera in 1907 while writing some of his major works: the Symphony No. 2 and Piano Sonata No. 1. It was the only major score that the composer took with him into his exile in the USA after the 1917 revolution. However, Rachmaninov never completed the work and upon his death the opera fragment fell into oblivion. The work was finally premiered in New York in 1984.

The opera, based upon a play by Maurice Maeterlinck, is performed in the recording by the Moscow Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, Students Choir and Opera Soloists. This is a premiere recording of the opera sung in Russian, the language in which Rachmaninov intended it to be performed.

This release marks the 20th anniversary of the Ondine label in 2005. His personal great appreciation for the music of Ravel prompted Reijo Kiilunen to name his company after the first movement of Ravel's piano cycle Gaspard de la nuit, when he started business in 1985.

This CD includes the title piece Ondine both in its orchestration by Marius Constant, performed by the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach, as well as in the original piano version, performed by Tzimon Barto. Gaspard de la nuit was written on an inspiration drawn from three poems by Aloysius Bertrand (1807-1841), which are also included on this recording, recited by the great French actress Carole Bouquet.

Ondine is pleased to announce its first collaboration with Austrian violinist Benjamin Schmid, here performing Reger's Violin Concerto and the Chaconne for Solo Violin.

Despite Hindemith describing Reger as "one of the last giants of music", his works are rarely performed today. The Violin Concerto is a hugely charming Romantic work with broad sentimental gestures.

The CD also includes the Chaconne for Solo Violin, a work inspired by Reger's greatest idol Johann Sebastian Bach. Known for his exceptionally wide repertoire and a great sense of musicality, Benjamin Schmid is one of the most versatile violinists of today. He is also a sought-after jazz violinist.

Artistic director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra since 2009, Hannu Lintu has quickly created an international career. In 2013 he will assume the post of chief conductor of the Finnish RSO.

With this new release the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Daniel Reuss pay tribute to Max Reger (1873-1916) and Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918)

In his collection of sacred and secular songs, Reger connects them with nature and its rhythm.

Rudolf Tobias uses more secular texts for his songs. Two of the most famous ones - "Eks teie tea" and "Otsekui hirv" - are included on this release and offer a stunning introduction to his music.

The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is one of the world's finest choral ensembles and internationally praised for its stunning sound.

Daniel Reuss is one of today's most acclaimed choral conductors. Alongside his two ensembles, the Capella Amsterdam and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, he is a frequent guest at international concert venues across the world and has won many awards for his recordings.

- This new recording features star conductor Sakari Oramo and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra with two Italian masterpieces by the late-Romantic composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936).

- The symphonic poem Fontane di Roma remains one of Respighi's most popular works and forms part of his Roman Trilogy. Each movement depicts one of Rome's fountains during different periods of the day and night, while the work as a whole showcases the centuries-old Italian marriage of culture, art, and worldly pleasure.

- The discovery piece on this disc, the monumental Concerto 'in the Mixolydian mode', deserves more widespread introduction into the standard repertoire; its title refers to the work's majestic main theme that is derived from medieval plainchant.

- This work's champion, star pianist Olli Mustonen, has been hailed by The Sunday Times as, "a living dream of pianism, having broken through an expressive barrier that other players do not know exists."

Image Symphony No. 3 / Le Festin d'araignee
This Albert Roussel disc couples the Third Symphony with one of the composer's most popular pieces, the complete music for the one-act pantomime ballet Le Festin de l'araignée. This recording completes a cycle of three releases featuring the four symphonies and two ballets by the French composer, performed by the Orchestre de Paris under music director Christoph Eschenbach.

The Third Symphony, which was given its world première in Boston in 1930, is a true masterpiece and remains the most popular of Roussel's symphonic works. Le Festin de l'araignée (The Spider's Feast) was written to a libretto by Gilbert de Voisins and completed in 1913. It is one of Roussel's two most celebrated ballets (the other being Bacchus et Ariane, featured on ODE 1065-2). The music is energetic, melodic, original, and pictorial, and the listener can easily imagine the action accompanying the music, helped by the dramaturgical annotations from the original score which are contained in the track listing of this CD.

The booklet contains expert liner notes written by Damien Top from the Centre International Albert-Roussel in France, as well as rare photographs.

This Albert Roussel disc couples his First and Fourth Symphonies. It is the second volume in a cycle of three releases featuring the four symphonies and two ballets by the French composer. Performed by the Orchestre de Paris and its music director Christoph Eschenbach, the Fourth Symphony, written in 1934, is considered the crowning achievement of Roussel's career. The First Symphony was completed in 1906 and consists of four movements tracing the four seasons with their descriptive titles.

Ondine new release includes works written in the last decade by one of the most important Finnish contemporary composers, Kaija Saariaho (b. 1958). Two of the works, the orchestral version of Quatre instants and Émilie Suite, feature the award-winning soprano Karen Vourc'h. Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg is conducted by the orchestra's new Music Director, Marko Letonja.

Émilie Suite is a 25-minute work based on Saariaho's 80-minute monodrama Opera Émilie. The Opera tells the dramatic story of a true historical character, Marquise Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749), one of the earliest woman scientists, who was also a mathematician and a physician. The suite includes three songs and two orchestral interludes from the Opera.

Quatre instant is one of Saariaho's vocal masterpieces, a song cycle in four movements, originally written for voice and piano, but soon adapted into an orchestral version by the composer. The songs which are based on texts written by Amin Maalouf for Kaija Saariaho reflect various dimensions of love.

Terra Memoria is a work for string orchestra, originally commissioned by the Emerson String Quartet. This meditative work is dedicated "for those departed".

The Finnish accordionist Janne Rättyä is regarded as one of the most successful classical accordionists. His second solo release for Ondine contains Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757).

He performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, in the U.S. and Asia. He has appeared with musicians such as Jorma Hynninen, Pekka Kuusisto, Martyn Brabbins and Patrick Gallois, to name but a few and has appeared also as a soloist with many Finnish and foreign orchestras.

The accordion, in Janne Rättyä's hands, seems capable of an aesthetic feat. The nuanced attention to sonic shape and the gentleness with which Scarlatti's articulations unfold reveal the stunning range of colour and affective colouration of Scarlatti's sonic ventures.

- To mark the 200th birthday of Robert Schumann in 2010, this new recording includes a unique program of the great German Romantic composer's late piano works.

- This release also marks the 70th birthday of Christoph Eschenbach - one of the great musicians of our times. This CD features him both as pianist and as conductor, together with his long-time musical protégé and close friend, pianist Tzimon Barto.
- Together, they perform a new Schumann "piano concerto arrangement": Eschenbach has coupled his elder compatriot's concertante rarities Op. 92 and Op. 134, on the model of a three-movement piano concerto, in which the "Geistervariationen" for piano solo take the function of a slow middle movement.

- As an "encore" to this program, Christoph Eschenbach and Tzimon Barto recorded the arrangement for two pianos by Claude Debussy of Six Etudes in Canonic Form, written by Schumann originally for pedal piano.

- Christoph Eschenbach leads the renowned NDR Sinfonieorchester as its former Chief Conductor (1998-2004).

Image Symphonies Nos. 81, 162 & 181
This album profiles acclaimed Finnish conductor Leif Segerstam as an equally inspired composer who has written nearly 250 symphonies to this date.

Featured on this disc are three one-movement symphonies that form a kind of "Bergen trilogy": No. 81 "After Eighty..." (2002), No. 162 "Doubling the Number for Bergen..." (2006), and No. 181 "Names itself when played... = (raising the number with 100 for Bergen)" (2007). Segerstam's genius as a composer deploys itself through a unique notation technique: the score leaves a lot of freedom to the performers and yet requires no conductor for the orchestra. Hence, each performance turns into a unique listening experience.

These works are dedicated to and performed live on this disc by the reputed Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

SHENYANG, bass-baritone
MARI PALO, soprano

With this release Ondine presents two dramatic works by Dmitri Shostakovich, The Execution of Stepan Razin and the Zoya Suite, coupled with his Suite on Finnish Themes.

The Execution of Stepan Razin, premiered in Moscow in 1964, got a mixed reception. The execution scene and the final, tragic vision is simply spine-chilling: Stepan Razin's bloody head rolls to the ground and bursts out laughing at the Tsar. Capturing rich intonations and melodies of the text, the bass soloist and the chorus engage in a multi-layered dialogue of this very theatrical work.

The Zoya Suite is an orchestral suite from the music for the film Zoya (1944) a product of the war years, that tells of the cruel fate of 18-year-old partisan Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya fighting against the Germans. Shostakovich can well and truly be regarded as the father of Russian film music and also here, it's not only musical illustration, but he endowed the film with the drama of a classical symphony.

First performed in 2001, the Suite on Finnish Themes is a rather unknown work as being only discovered nearly four decades after Shostakovich died. The suite includes several arrangements of Finnish folk songs featuring a soprano and a tenor soloist.

28-year-old bass-baritone Shenyang was the winner of the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, a 2008 winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, and a 2010 winner of the Montblanc New Voices at Stars of the White Nights Festival. Shenyang embodies a 21st century bridge between the cultures of East and West. Born in Tianjin, China, he studied at the Shanghai Conservatory and is an alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and of the Julliard School Opera Center. Recent highlights have included a return to the New York Metropolitan for a new production of Don Giovanni, and debuts at the Glyndebourne Festival and the Bavarian State Opera. Other performances have taken him all over North America and Europe.

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra continuously collaborates with Ondine, having released a remarkable discography that has been awarded with many prizes.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2012, the State Choir "Latvija" is one of Europe's finest choirs and the winner of many awards. Its repertoire covers golden classics in all genres of choral music, both accompanied and unaccompanied, in a time frame from the early Renaissance to the present day. In recent years it has partnered leading orchestras in many parts of the world under numerous outstanding conductors.

Vladimir Ashkenazy has built an extraordinary career, not only as one of the most renowned and revered pianists of our times, but as an artist whose creative life encompasses a vast range of activities and continues to offer inspiration to musiclovers across the world. Vladimir Ashkenazy is featured on several Ondine releases. Recordings with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra include Berlioz's Harold in Italy (ODE 1188-2), Josef Suk's Asrael Symphony (ODE 1132-5) and Rautavaara's Third Piano Concerto Gift of Dreams (ODE 950-2), commissioned by Ashkenazy as a concerto which he could conduct from the piano.

Image Symphony No. 5 / Seven Romances by Poems of Blok
The latest newcomer in the successful recording series with The Philadelphia Orchestra and its Music Director Christoph Eschenbach features Dmitri Shostakovich’s perennially popular Fifth Symphony. The Largo movement – one of the most heartrendingly beautiful slow movements written by the composer – and the bombastic Finale provide for an entrancing super audio listening experience with the world-renowned sound of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Officially viewed as “the practical creative reply of a Soviet artist to just criticism,” this symphony was the Russian composer’s mid-career coup - after his music had been politically attacked, he got back into the good graces of both communist officials and the public, who stood and cheered its première in 1937.

An added bonus of this CD is the spellbinding song cycle ‘Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok’ (1880–1921), making this unusual coupling a unique release with a strong sales point; Christoph Eschenbach accompanies on piano the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Yvonne Naef and two members of the The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Ondine's successful partnership with violinist Christian Tetzlaff continues with a new release. The new recording contains the two Violin Concertos by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), two powerful works by the composer originally written for David Oistrakh.

Christian Tetzlaff has been considered as one of the world's leading international violinists for many years, and still maintains a most extensive performing schedule. Musical America named him "Instrumentalist of the Year" in 2005 and his recording of the violin concertos by Mendelssohn and Schumann, released on Ondine in 2011 (ODE 1195-2), received the "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik". Tetzlaff's recording of the Mozart Violin ODE 1239-2 2 Sonatas (ODE 1204-2) was chosen Gramophone Magazine's Editor's Choice and Recording of the Month by the BBC Music Magazine. Tetzlaff's previous release on Ondine featuring the Schumann Violin Sonatas (ODE 1205-2) was also chosen Disc of the Month by the Gramophone Magazine.

The two Violin Concertos by Shostakovich, written in the 1940s and 60s, belong to the composer's most powerful and most personal works, yet they are very much different from each other. Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 was written during a wave of Anti-Semitism in Soviet Union and premiered only after Stalin's death. Violin Concerto No. 2 is a grand example of Shostakovich's late period including quotes from Shostakovich's earlier works. David Oistrakh described the concertos: "I have played Shostakovich's magnificent Violin Concertos in many countries with the greatest pleasure. But they really are very different from one another: I would be hard put to find anything that they have musically in common."

Image Lemminkäinen Legends / Pohjola's Daughter

Conductor Hannu Lintu and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra are offering a full program of classic orchestral works by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957).

Lemminkäinen is a large and fascinating orchestral work in four movements based on the Finnish Kalevala epic. Originally completed in 1895 the work has a unique position in Sibelius' oeuvre: Sibelius never came closer to the very core of Symbolism than in the misty moods, swan motifs and macabre features of Lemminkäinen. It also includes one of Sibelius' most well-known orchestral pieces, The Swan of Tuonela. Written before the 1st Symphony, it is also noteworthy that Lemminkäinen lacks nothing of a symphony.

Sibelius was not totally satisfied with the work, but withdrew the work soon after its premiere until it was heard again in 1935. However, in his late years Sibelius did not even totally reject the idea of calling Lemminkäinen as 'a symphony'.

Pohjola's Daughter (Pohjolan tytär), completed in 1906, is among Sibelius' final orchestral pieces directly linked to the Kalevala epic in his transition from National Romanticism towards a more Classical idiom. It includes some of the boldest and most dramatic scoring that Sibelius ever wrote, illustrating Väinämöinen's futile attempts to win the maiden of Pohjola for himself.

Year 2015 marks the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), also known as "Finland's national composer".

Image Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5 (piano transc.)
This CD release features the popular Symphonies Nos. 2 and 5 by Jean Sibelius, performed by Henri Sigfridsson on piano.

Ever since its triumphant premiere, the Second Symphony has been one of Sibelius's most frequently performed works; of his symphonies, only the Fifth comes close in popularity. The works' grandiose Romanticism is brought into sharp highlight in these transcriptions for piano solo.

Finnish pianist Henri Sigfridsson has used the Sibelius-sanctioned arrangement of the Fifth Symphony by Karl Ekman as a basis for his own adaptation of the Second Symphony. Following in the tradition of Liszt's Beethoven transcriptions, these arrangements are faithful to the original yet exploit the potential of the piano in many ways.

Henri Sigfridsson has emerged as one of the major musical talents from Finland since he won, in 2005, the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Bonn. This is his first solo album for Ondine.

Who could resist the mysterious atmosphere of Die stille Stadt (The Silent Town), magically sung, with an equally magical accompaniment conducted by Leif Segerstam?
Michael Kennedy, The Sunday Telegraph, July 8, 2007, 4/5

A tribute for the Sibelius 50th anniversary in 2007, this CD contains fully remastered recordings, originally released in 1994, of Sibelius's Orchestral Songs. In addition to the more familiar songs such as Var det en dröm (Did I just dream?), Laulu ristilukista (The Song of the Cross-spider) and Kaiutar star baritone Jorma Hynninen also performs seldom heard large-scale and impressive Koskenlaskijan morsiamet (The Rapid-shooter's Brides).

Jorma Hynninen is one of the most celebrated Finnish singers. He has not only renewed the song interpretation tradition but also provided the inspiration for new operas. His greatest musical love has always been lied, a genre in which he has concentrated on the song cycles of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf and the solo songs of Sibelius, Oskar Merikanto, Toivo Kuula and Yrjö Kilpinen. His concert engagements have taken him all over the world and to such illustrious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Musikverein, the Concertgebouw, the Boston and Chicago Symphony Halls, and the Tanglewood, Ravinia and Salzburg Festivals.

This recording earned Jorma Hynninen an "Artist of the Year 1994" Award by the UK Sibelius Society and won a Cannes Classical Award 1995 in the category Songs/Vocal Recitals 20th Century.

"En andfågel bygger ett bo på en sjöjungfrus knä - i en tom värld av bara vind och vatten. Men boet faller i vattnet och innehållet i äggen blir ämne för himlen, månen och stjärnorna. "...there are no finer performances available of either symphony, and that's saying a lot--but once you hear this exceptional disc I have little doubt that you will agree. This disc is special. (...) Throughout, the playing of the orchestra is simply gorgeous, with extremely characterful string phrasing, cutting but always well-tuned interjections from the winds, and imposing but never crude brass and timpani. Ensemble balances are simply perfect between sections, and the sonics are warmly natural."

Image Scene d'amore
This disc features the great lyric soprano Soile Isokoski with popular love scenes and arias from 19th-century Italian, French and Russian operas marking her greatest successes on stage. Included are the famous aria "Sì. Mi chiamano Mimì" from Puccini's La Bohème, with which Soile Isokoski gave her opera début in 1989, as well as Marguerite's aria "Il était un roi de Thulé" from Gounod's Faust and the famous 'Letter scene' from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which she sung at the Finnish National Opera, in 2006, to international acclaim.

Audiences and critics hail the Finnish soprano as one of the finest singers in the world. Soile Isokoski's recent orchestral albums on Ondine (Sibelius's Luonnotar and orchestral songs, ODE 1080-5; Mozart Arias, ODE 1043-2; R. Strauss's Four Last Songs and other orchestral songs, ODE 982-2) have been praised as top-choice recordings and earned the highest distinctions such as the BBC Music Magazine Disc of the Year 2007 Award, a 2007 MIDEM Classical Award, and a 2002 Gramophone Award.

Soile Isokoski is accompanied on this disc by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of young star conductor Mikko Franck.

Marek Janowski, conductor
Soile Isokoski, soprano

Isokoski has all the attributes of a supreme Straussian soprano: a radiantly beatiful voice, unblemished legato, lustrous high notes and the ability to float those sumptuous phrases on apparently limitless supplies of breath.
Richard Wigmore, The Daily Telegraph, April 21, 2006, Classical CD of the Week

In her outstanding rendition of fifteen selected Strauss songs, Soile Isokoski unveils a new dimension of singing: she uses her voice like an instrument which has not been invented yet for the orchestra.
Wolfram Goertz, Die Zeit, October 10, 2002

This is a great recording of Strauss's Four Last Songs; you'll find it at the top of my 2002 Want List.
Marc Mandel, Fanfare Magazine, September/October 2002

Isokoski sings Strauss as if it had been written for her. (...) the Berlin Radio Symphony plays like the Berlin Philharmonic.
John Boyer, American Record Guide, September/October 2002

Soile Isokoski is (...) a wonderful Strauss singer with a beautiful lyric soprano voice - you can just float away on the sound.
James Jolly, Gramophone Award 2002, Editor's Choice

Strauss singing doesn't come much better than this. (...) Here she brings her gifts of sheer beauty of sound combined with a quite unaffected approach to pieces that have suffered enough in their time from over-interpretation.
Alan Blyth, Gramophone, April 2002, Editor's Choice: Record of the Month

This great recording is up there with the greatest of them.
Barry Millington, BBC Music Magazine, April 2002, Performance*****

I can't praise this beautiful release enough. (...) no lover of Strauss' songs or of great, elegant, un-prima-donna-ish singing would be without Isokoski's.

Soile Isokoski, soprano
Marita Viitasalo, piano

This CD features Finnish star soprano Soile Isokoski and her longstanding duo partner, pianist Marita Viitasalo, with a selection of Lieder by Richard Strauss. Included are such popular songs as Zueignung, Cäcilie, Morgen!, and Allerseelen. Along with the cycle of 3 Ophelia-Lieder and Strauss's final complete composition, Malven, this collection spans 65 years of Strauss' writing.

The music of Richard Strauss has been a cornerstone of the singing career of Soile Isokoski: "His music just sits so well in my voice, in terms of both its range and its lyrical quality." Her earlier CD release of Strauss Orchestral Songs and Vier letzte Lieder (ODE 982-2) became a major commercial success and earned her a Gramophone Award.

Soile Isokoski is hailed as one of the finest singers in the world ("Isokoski's lyric soprano is like liquid gold." - David L. Kirk, Fanfare Magazine, March/April 2009) whose recordings have been praised as top-choice and garnered the highest distinctions at the BBC Music Magazine Awards, Gramophone Awards and MIDEM Classical Awards.

Image Three Hymns / Opera Arias
Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra
OKKO KAMU, conductor

Ondine is pleased to announce the new release of legendary Strauss-singer Soile Isokoski. A multiple award-winner, her recording of Strauss Four Last Song won a Gramophone Award in 2002, in March this year it was the Winner in the blind test arranged by French magazine Classica.

The rarely recorded Three Hymns are coupled with opera arias from Ariadne auf Naxos, Der Rosenkavalier and Capriccio. All these arias are part of Soile Isokoski's standard repertoire, she has performed them regularly at opera houses like State Opera, Covent Garden, Milan's La Scala, the Semperoper in Dresden, in Berlin, Paris and at prestigious festivals like Salzburg, Edinburgh, Orange and Savonlinna.

Three Hymns is a major work, which so far has been surprisingly rarely recorded, no doubt partly because of the great vocal demand it poses to the soloist. Nonetheless they are atmospheric concert pieces with Strauss' orchestration in full bloom. They already anticipate the Four Last Songs and are waiting to be rediscovered.

Erkki-Sven Tüür:

5. sinfoniassaan säveltäjä Erkki-Sven Tüür toteutti pitkäaikaisen haaveensa yhdistämällä rock-muusikkotaustansa, jazzin ja sinfonisen musiikin. Teoksen esitykset ovat kirvoittanet ihailua, kuinka onnistuneesti Tüür on nivonut nämä erilaiset musiikilliset elementit luontevaksi sinfoniseksi kokonaisuudeksi.

Erkki-Sven Tüür halusi liittää sinfonian yhdeksi elementiksi myös improvisaation, jonka esittäjänä tulisi olla sähkökitaraa soittava rock/jazz -kitaristi. Nguyên Lên soitossa on hienoja inspiraation välähdyksiä, joissa kuullaan hänen monipuolinen taustansa rockin, jazzin ja maailmanmusiikin parissa.

Prophecy harmonikalle ja orkesterille syntyi Mika Väyrysen tilauksesta. Teoksen nimi viittaa eri kulttuureissa ja perinteissä kauan tärkeänä pidettyyn "näkyjen näkemisen" lahjaan.

This CD features Kari Kriikku ("a physically flamboyant player of Olympian virtuosity" - The New York Times) with Uljas Pulkkis' clarinet concerto, Tales of Joy, Passion, and Love. This cheerful work, in which the clarinet soloist performs like a star tenor in a drama, was written for Kari Kriikku in 2005/2010. Its concluding movement, Tales of Love, includes the meditative setting of the poem "She sang of Love" from Irish Melodies by Thomas Moore, featuring baritone Gabriel Suovanen as co-soloist.

Also included are the seven orchestral fantasies of On the Crest of Waves (2003), as well as in the tone poem Vernal Bloom (2008). All featured works exhibit brilliant sonorities and both Romantic and Impressionist dimensions.

Ondine herewith continues Kari Kriikku's acclaimed recording series of clarinet concertos, which have been written for and performed by this muse to a number of Finland's high profile composers. Previous releases include concertos by Magnus Lindberg (2006 BBC Music Magazine Award & Classic FM Gramophone Award; ODE 1038-2), Jukka Tiensuu (ODE 1166-2 and ODE 778-2), Kimmo Hakola (ODE 1063-2), and Jouni Kaipainen (ODE 778-2). This Double CD release celebrates the memory of John F. Kennedy, and the 50th anniversary of his inauguration as U.S. President, by coupling new and historic recordings by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C.

The first disc features Christoph Eschenbach conducting the 50th anniversary concert at the Kennedy Center, recorded live on January 22-24. It includes the world premiere recording of Peter Lieberson's Remembering JFK (An American Elegy), with famous actor Richard Dreyfuss narrating excerpts from three speeches of President Kennedy. Also included are Bernstein's popular Symphonic Dances from 'West Side Story'.

The second disc contains excerpts from the previously unreleased 1961 Inaugural Concert under then-Music Director Howard Mitchell, including radio commentary from the original broadcast. At the Kennedys' request, the Inaugural Program emphasized American composers, and the excerpts selected include John La Montaine's Overture From Sea to Shining Sea (commissioned by the NSO specifically for the Inaugural Concert) and the first movement from Randall Thompson's Testament of Freedom (with the Georgetown University Glee Club).

A particular focus is on the music of George Gershwin: the 2011 recording features acclaimed pianist Tzimon Barto as soloist in the Concerto in F, while the 1961 broadcast includes Rhapsody in Blue with piano soloist Earl Wild.

Issued during the NSO's 80th anniversary season, this release marks one of the highlights of Christoph Eschenbach's inaugural season as Music Director of the NSO and Music Director of the Kennedy Center, as well as the opening of a recording partnership with Ondine. The NSO's first commercial recording in ten years was made possible in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Janne Rättyä, accordion

On this CD an accordion takes the listener along on a long, existential journey out of silence. Bach composed this "Aria with Diverse Variations" for Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk to be a little cheered up in his sleepless nights by harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, a pupil of Bach and in the service of the Count at that time. Whether this anecdote is true or not, today, more than 250 years after the Goldberg Variations were composed, they offer a listening experience with a shifting balance between inexhaustible external kinetic energy and complete inner piece.

It is also time to lay aside the prejudices concerning accordion and its reputation as mainly a folk music instrument. The fresh performance and splendid musicality of Janne Rättyä show how expressive and delicate the accordion can be, and even serve the purpose of doing justice to as an iconic keyboard work as the Goldberg Variations.

The Finnish accordionist Janne Rättyä is regarded as one of the most successful classical accordionists. He performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, in the U.S. and Asia and has appeared with musicians such as Jorma Hynninen, Pekka Kuusisto, Martyn Brabbins and Patrick Gallois, but also as a soloist with many Finnish and foreign orchestras.

Janne Rättyä was awarded numerous prizes in various international classical accordion and soloist competitions, most notably the first prize in the Arrasate Hiria competition in Spain in 1996. He collaborates closely with contemporary composers like Aldo Clementi, Dieter Schnebel, Uljas Pulkkis and Iris ter Schiphorst, to create new music for his instrument.
