Global star tenor Piotr Beczala presents Vincerò!, the first fruit of his exclusive collaboration with PENTATONE. Lars Vogt’s new solo piano release is dedicated to the piano works of Leos Janacek (1854–1928), one of the most original voices among the 20th century composers. This album includes three of the composer’s most well-known and most extensive solo piano works. These works by Janacek are marked by deep melancholy and passion. They manifest the composer's rich inner world through a musical language that remains to be timeless. Lars Vogt has established himself as one of the leading musicians of his generation. Born in the German town of Düren in 1970, he first came to public attention when he won second prize at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition and has enjoyed a varied career for over twenty-five years. His versatility as an artist ranges from the music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, to the romantics Schumann, Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, to contemporary works such as the Lutoslawski concerto.

As first woman ever in the seventy-year history of the ARD International Music Competition Munich, Selina Ott was awarded 1st Prize in the category trumpet in September 2018 at the age of only 20. Subsequently, she has been invited to perform with leading orchestras such as the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich and the Czech Philharmonic, and to international festivals. Selina Ott started her music studies at the age of five years on the piano. One year later, she began to study trumpet with her father Erich Ott. She continued her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Martin Mühlfellner and at the University of Music in Karlsruhe with Reinhold Friedrich. In 2020 she graduated with distinction in the class of Roman Rindberger at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK). In addition, she attended several masterclasses by Gabor Tarkövi, Jens Lindemann, Hans Gansch, Guillaume Couloumy and the like. On her debut album with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Roberto Paternostro, the young artist presents an exciting selection from the opulent range of 20th century trumpet concertos that have been written in close temporal proximity to one another: the very frequently performed concerto by Arutunian is accompanied by the much rarer first concerto by Vladimir Peskin. By exhibiting completely different facets of musical diction, the piece of the Frenchman Alfred Desenclos forms a charming contrast to these two Soviet works. Selina Ott says that the concerto by Desenclos ‘is really my favourite piece’. She performed it in the first round of the ARD International Music Competition in 2018, where she ultimately won the First Prize.

Marc Albrecht and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra present Zemlinsky’s lush symphonic poem Die Seejungfrau. Zemlinsky was a child of fin-de-siècle Vienna, who for decades has been overshadowed by colleagues such as Gustav Mahler – the man who married Alma, the woman Zemlinsky also loved – and Arnold Schoenberg – the man who would later become his brother-in-law. In recent times, Zemlinsky is finally gaining the recognition he deserves. The same applies to his symphonic poem Die Seejungfrau, based on Andersen’s Little Mermaid story. Zemlinsky withdrew the score after its premiere in 1905; the three movements were first reunited in the 1980s thanks to scholars, after which the piece could start its second life. Die Seejungfrau seems inspired by Zemlinsky’s love in vain for Alma, clothed in cinematic fin-de-siècle music with Debussy-like evocations of the sea. This new recording marks the final PENTATONE album of Marc Albrecht as chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. It is their sixth collective PENTATONE recording, and underlines their proficiency in German late-Romantic repertoire. Previously, they have released Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben/Burleske (2018), Mahler Song Cycles (2017), Brahms/Schoenberg (2015), Mahler’s Fourth Symphony (2015) and his song cycle Das Lied von der Erde (2013).

Giovanni Antonini and his ensemble Il Giardino Armonico celebrate the composer who made them famous: Antonio Vivaldi. Their recordings of The Four Seasons and Cecilia Bartoli’s famous first Vivaldi recital left an indelible mark on the discography of the red-haired Priest! Their musical fireworks display continues with a programme of concertos that is bound to provoke strong reactions, since it is the result of a meeting with a musician who is equally adept at shifting boundaries, the violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Together they have devised a programme entitled What’s Next Vivaldi? which interweaves ultra-virtuosic concertos by Vivaldi with, between each concerto, short pieces written by much more recent composers, Luca Franesconi, Simone Movio, Giancinto Scelsi, Aureliano Cattaneo and Giovanni Sollima, and mostly commissioned by Patricia Kopatchinskaja especially for this programme.

The personal story of the cello played braced against the shoulder (violoncello da spalla) began when Sergey Malov first listened to a vinyl recording of Bach’s cello suites played by the legendary Pablo Casals from his father’s collection. Later on, when listening to the recordings he could not get rid of the feeling that this light and dancing music does not fit that well with such a heavy big instrument as a cello. Although perhaps he just wanted to play these amazing pieces himself. Malov was dreaming about playing them authentically. He had no idea though what that authentic way was or how he could place such a huge bass instrument on his shoulder. One cold winter day in 2009 he accidentally found a video recording of Allemanda from the 2nd Bach Cello Suite played by Dmitry Badiarov - a violin maker, co-author of the violoncello da spalla revival project and an inspiring violinist himself. Suddenly his boldest dreams and phantasies came true in a most detailed way.

With 'Røta', her debut album on Berlin Classics, Ragnhild Hemsing on the violin and hardanger fiddle presents her Norwegian roots, addresses her identity and the connection to her musical upbringing. Central to this is the relationship between classical music and Norwegian folk music, as well as the contrast of the different sounds of the two instruments. In addition to works by well-known Norwegian composers, Ragnhild Hemsing has recorded four different folk melodies for Hardanger fiddle from her homeland for 'Røta'.

'I find it very interesting to combine the repertoire of composers who have been inspired by the folk music and traditions of their respective countries,' Hemsing explains the choice of works selected for this album. Ole Bull, Edvard Grieg, Johan Svendsen or Johan Halvorsen are Norwegian greats of the 19th century whose music gives her the comforting feeling of 'being at home'. Together with Mario Häring on piano and Benedict Kloeckner on cello, she embarks on a journey through her native sound world.
