"...et lysende italiensk julealbum, du kan nyde, når træet er tændt, og der er konfekt i skålene. Lars Ulrik Mortensen dirigerer sit barokorkester, så du fra start til slut føler dig løftet og kælet blidt for," skriver Thomas Michelsen for Politiken december 2020

"Ensemblet er lille og intimt, instrumenterne og musikerne er som vanligt hos Concerto Copenhagen styret af baroktradition, men spruttende af respekt for værkernes livskraft og livsglæde. Dyb ro. Utålmodig forventning. Styrtebade af udløsninger." GregersDH, november 2020.

"Thus he succeeds in creating a very contemplative CD full of beautiful music, which Concerto Copenhagen plays on a high musical level."Pizzicato, november 2020.

"A beautifully performed and recorded disc, perfect for this time ofyear!"Classical Explorer, december 2020.

"Concerto Copenhagen is a very fine ensemble which approaches this repertoire from a rather intimate angle. With eight violins, two violas and two cellos, it is not that small, but it is able to produce a refined sound and often movements are performed with great subtlety."
MusicWeb International

It’s beautifully played by Lars Ulrik Mortensen’s Concerto Copenhagen, with telling contributions from lower strings… These are small-scale performances but the intimacy always works in the music’s favour. The Arts Desk

»Den russiske sopran Elena Tsallagova er med sin sølvglitrende stemme perfekt til at fremstille en person, der evner at mime det perfekte«
Magasinet Klassisk

Based on Oscar Wilde’s story The Birthday of the Infanta, Zemlinsky’s single-act opera Der Zwerg is the tragic tale of a dwarf who is presented at court, falls in love with the beautiful Donna Clara, but is ultimately forced to see himself as others see him and to die of a broken heart. Preceded by Schoenberg’s Accompaniment to a Cinematographic Scene, Op. 34 (1930), Zemlinsky’s Romantic score is full of psychological intrigue. Is Der Zwerg a critique of society’s superficiality? Is it the composer’s self-portrait in his doomed affair with Alma Schindler? Director Tobias Kratzer’s stunning, transparent production creates a space in which each character is thrown into sharp relief in this ‘fine, noble and melancholy work’. (Bachtrack.com)

"(...) it's a thought-provoking, musically excellent show that's well worth seeking out" Gramophone, april 2021.

What are heroes made of and why do our societies need them so badly? At the Staatsoper Stuttgart, stage director Árpád Schilling tries to answer this mythological, political and existential question, lying at the core of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin. “A wonder! A miracle!”, the men and women of Brabant agreed when, against all expectations, someone stood up for Elsa and invalidated the allegations made by the plaintiff Telramund. And yet he does the most normal thing in the world: to help a person in distress. So why is there a need for this savior, surrounded by the aura of mystery, whose name and origin even his new wife Elsa cannot ask? Why does the collective body abdicates its moral and political responsibilities and surrenders them to a single individual? And when does the providential man stops being a savior and becomes a threat? For Hungarian stage director Árpád Schilling, a fierce enemy of the very idea of the cult of a personality, and he himself a political exile, these questions lie at the core of Richard Wagner’s Lohengrin. For his new production at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, the stage director recenters the opera on the expressivity of the direction, and strips the stage of all its ornamental or mythological elements. He creates a coming-of-age tale, pervaded by the themes of responsibility, trust, and the relationship between the individual and the collective. This powerful and ambitious proposition is mirrored in Maestro Cornelius Meister’s expressive and philosophical conducting, and in Michaël König, Simone Schneider, Martin Gantner, Okka von der Damerau’s profound singing.

After his Neapolitan training Gaspare Spontini settled in Paris for a few years, where he was nominated “compositeur particulier de la chambre” of Empress Josephine, Napoleon’s wife. It was indeed Napoleon who, in 1808, commissioned him the opera, Fernand Cortez, ou La conquete du Mexique, of which he attended the 28th November 1809 premiere. The strongly idealized figure of Cortez, presented as a brave, wise and merciful general, predestined to victory, was to be an image of Napoleon. His fight against Spanish “obscurantism” was Cortez’s fight against the cruelty, superstition and dark power intrigues of the Aztec sacerdotal class. Cortez frees the Mexicans from their “evil god”, and only the High Priest refuses his clemency. Like in a piece a sauvetage, at the last moment Montezuma’s niece, Amazily, who had offered her life in exchange of that of her beloved Cortez’s brother Alvar, is rescued. The Mexican chief Telasco promotes the cessation of hostilities: the marriage between Cortez and Amazily sanctions the peace between two peoples. In Spain, the French troops met a very different fate than Cortez’s men in the happy ending of Spontini’s opera and it has been suggested that the disastrous outcome of the Spanish campaign was responsible for the limited number of performances run by Fernand Cortez in Paris between the end of 1809 and January 1812. This production is a world premiere recording of the first modern times performance of the original 1809 version. It was recorded in October 2019, exactly 500 years after Cortez’s first arrival in Mexico. Director Cecilia Ligorio drew inspiration from a murales painted by Orozco inside a building in Mexico city, where Cortez is depicted in a shiny, silver armor and Malinche – the historical figure who inspired the character of Amazily – wears no clothes and is painted with the color of Earth.

Instrumental Solo Recording – Lars Vogt (Piano)

Lars Vogt’s new solo piano release is dedicated to the piano works of Leos Janacek (1854–1928), one of the most original voices among the 20th century composers. This album includes three of the composer’s most well-known and most extensive solo piano works. These works by Janacek are marked by deep melancholy and passion. They manifest the composer's rich inner world through a musical language that remains to be timeless. Lars Vogt has established himself as one of the leading musicians of his generation. Born in the German town of Düren in 1970, he first came to public attention when he won second prize at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition and has enjoyed a varied career for over twenty-five years. His versatility as an artist ranges from the music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, to the romantics Schumann, Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, to contemporary works such as the Lutoslawski concerto.

Classics Without Limits

This album by the young ensemble Salaputia Brass is dedicated to works by composers from England. The English tradition with the different brass formations meets here on the one hand arranged classical works by Gustav Holst, an original work by Arthur Butterworth, through arranged pieces by Anthony Holborne to the cross-genre themes from James Bond to the Beatles: All you need is Brass! They modestly call themselves “little fellows” (lat. Salaputia), but they have it all behind their ears - or rather, in their lips. Because nothing is too difficult for the young virtuosos from Salaputia Brass! The newcomers have already delighted in numerous concerts, including several times in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival, at the Meran Brass Festival and as a guest on the ARTE TV program "Stars von Morgen". With their thematically designed programs, they manage the balancing act between the highest musical standards and entertaining listening pleasure for everyone.
