Fuldstændig ligesom Larsens egne sange kunne man tilføje.

”Michala Petri's uncomplicated approach to recorder playing is in the top flight of virtuoso achievement.” – Gramophone Magazine

“He [Anthony Newman] amazed us throughout with his economy of gesture and perfect understanding of classical style. He has a genius for improvising
in a manner both spontaneous and digitally immaculate.” – Washington Post

World Premiere Recording of Richard Harvey's Concerto Incantato!

Only available recording of Malcolm Arnold's late Concerto!

Michala Petri weaves a wonderous web of musical enchantment!

Recorded in state-of-the-art Super Audio Sound!

The recorder has been part of Western music for more than seven hundred years, during which time it has enjoyed a particularly special relationship with the composers and musicians of England. The present recording showcases the music of three generations of English composers who have embraced the recorder, making significant contributions to the repertoire in the process. Gordon Jacob, the eldest, composed numerous works for the recorder from the 1950s up until his last year.

Sir Malcolm Arnold was to follow Jacob's example contributing his Concerto for Recorder, originally written for and premiered by Michala Petri. Arnold's amphibious existence as a composer for both film and the concert hall is echoed in the career of our youngest contributor, the BAFTA award-winning composer and recorder player Richard Harvey.

The result? Pure musical enchantment! Jacob's delightful Suite has been a mainstay for recorder players (and an audience favourite...) since its premiere, while Arnold's rarely performed concerto is a late masterwork truly deserving a wider audience makes a most welcome return to the catalogue. The program is capped off by Harvey's magical Concerto Incantato (composed especially for Michala) - a true concert piece for the Harry Potter generation.

"The highlight of the evening came... with the world premiere of Richard Harvey's Concerto Incantato, a work written specifically for this concert and for Michala Petri and five (or perhaps it was six?) of her recorders... Harvey's work brings together a broad range of musical influences...oozing walls of warm string harmony and a distinct story-telling quality - a highly consumable work commandingly performed." -

"“Half Monk-Half Rascal” they called him. Poulenc`s deep religious conviction shining through just as clearly in some works as his irreverent sense of humour did in others. Layton deftly contrasts both worlds on this disc and response of his Danish singers in works including the Sept chansons and Chansons francaises is both idiomatic and precisely-judged. A lovely record."

New Nordic Music for Recorder and Choir

- All World Premiere Recordings!
- Four modern masters explore the musical possibilities of combining the Recorder and choir!
- Featuring the virtuoso Danish National Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Stephen Layton
- Recorded in state-of-the-art Super Audio Sound!

The "idea" of combining the recorder with a choir is certainly nothing new; the recorder has joined the human voice in song for almost as long as the instrument has existed. The recorder is in a sense the closest instrument to the human voice, producing a pure sound without mechanisms, reeds or elaborate mouthpieces to alter the tone. However, until recently, few contemporary composers have explored the expressive potential that this combination can deliver. A recurring theme of each of the four highly personal and distinctive works on this program is a contemplation of nature and humanity. Beginning with Latvian composer Ugis Praulins magical adaptation of Andersen's beloved fairy tale, we traverse the darker realms of the human heart in Sunleif Rasmussen's setting of Inger Christensen's confessional response to Wallace Steven's "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird." Young Danish composer Peter Bruun provides us a glimpse into Gerard Manley Hopkins secretive mysticism while Daniel Börtz, dean of Swedish composers, holds us rapt in adoration as his celestial angel-bird soars above the extraordinary virtuoso singing of the Danish National Vocal Ensemble. Once again, Michala Petri has proven herself not only the unquestioned master of the recorder, but her visionary approach to programming and commitment to expanding her instrument's repertoire into the 21st century make this an absolutely essential disc for fans of Michala, choral music, Nordic composers, and contemporary music with a HEART as well as with a "system." "It also goes without saying that Michala Petri has no peer today as a master of her instrument, and she wrings more color and expressive intensity from the recorder than you ever believed possible." - David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

Discover the music of four contemporary Chinese composers each of whose works display a distinctive approach to blending eastern and western aesthetic traditions. In the music of classmates Chen Yi and Bright Sheng (both of whom currently reside and teach in America), they wrestled with how to approach the problem of incorporating traditional Chinese material within the largely Western-derived language of modern music. For Sheng, this takes place primarily in terms of utilizing Chinese melodies and subject matter within the context of a 20th century symphonic idiom. In Chen Yi's music, she not only incorporates Chinese melodies into her works, but frequently bases her compositions on ancient Chinese musical theories, abstracting and distilling them into a unique, contemporary musical language. In the case of versatile and prolific mainland composer Tang Jianping, the sky is the limit! Tang freely draws on every available resource from Buddhist chants to Bach Preludes and Fugues, creating accessible and emotionally compelling works that could only have been written by a Chinese. The fourth voice in our fugue, Ma Shuilong is the dean of Taiwanese composers and has the honor of being the first-ever Taiwanese composer to have been performed at New York's Lincoln Center. Ma's music is also characterized by the amphibious quality seen in that of his younger colleagues - namely adapting Chinese content to western forms and idioms in a musically and aesthetically satisfying manner.

Image Melodies
"If ever a performer had that indefinable quality we tend to call "charisma", Chinese violinist Chen Yi oozes it throughout this programme of some of the most beautiful melodies ever written down. This is not to demean the very accomplished accompaniment of Lars Hannibal in any way, but the arrangements put Yi firmly at the foreground for the majority of this recital and it is her performance one remembers long after the disc has finished. The selection of music is well made with no low points in evidence. The style of much of this material is such that in lesser hands performances could be dripping with sentimentality and make the whole project distasteful; these two musicians are far and away above any of that nonsense. The arrangements are skilfully and sensitively done, so much so that one hardly conscious of the fact that these are arrangements (with the exception of the Paganini). which is how it should be. The recording quality is one of the best I have ever heard of this combination of instruments. The balance is excellent between Yi and Hannibal and I don`t doubt that producer Preben Iwan had something to do with it so he gets a mention here. The packaging too is no less impressive; attractive front cover and informative booklet with colour photographs. This is a first-rate release and for lovers of superior musicianship and good tunes this is a must. Recommended.

Image Dialogue: East Meets West
Imagine you are a composer, commissioned to write a work for two, primarily diatonic woodwind instruments, each possessing distinctive tone colors, a long history and strong cultural associations. You are writing music to be performed by two consummate masters of their instruments who can do virtually anything! Your biggest challenge is that you must somehow express the concept of "East Meets West." The last century saw the first large-scale cultural exchange between Asia and the West, and encounters with the music of Asia influenced some of Europe's greatest composers - Debussy, Britten, Messiaen, to name a few. And many extended performance techniques, (such as fluttertonguing, pitch bending, the production of "non-musical" sounds, micro-tones, etc.) associated with modern music in the West, have been a part of traditional Chinese music for centuries. Conversely, the introduction of western techniques, such as counterpoint, functional harmony and formal structures has provided Chinese composers with new creative resources of their own. "Dialogue - East Meets West" is the result of several years' discussion and planning. It represents an exploration in sound, featuring ten new compositions by five young Chinese and five young Danish composers. Their works are colorful and varied and provide ten distinctive visions of the musical encounter between China and the West. Whether combining tradition and innovation, eastern and western elements, borrowed or newly created musical resources, each piece is an exploration of how these disparate and seemingly mutually exclusive views can provide new possibilities for creativity and beauty. While the very nature of a "duet" implies a "dialogue", the variety of musical expressions create a 'dialogue within a dialogue'; the unique vision of each composer interacting with the vision of every other composer presented here. Introduction In each of the works on this program, you will hear the evolving cultural exchange between East and West, and how these young composers perceive and define both the differences and similarities. As in "Rong" by Yao Hu, where each instrument has distinctive melodic material signifying 'China' and 'Denmark'; Or Rofelt's "Circonflexe", where the instruments serve a purely coloristic function, drawing on extended performance techniques from both traditions, merged into a modern "international" language; Or the crystalline structures of Chen Ruomei's "Jue", whose serene coda is simultaneously Chinese and Western; Or the self-contained expression Monrad's "East/West-project 16", where the cultural interplay is seamlessly integrated into the music's overall texture. More explicit and nationalistic references appear as well, as in the pure folk-inspired melodies of Siqin Chaoketu's Yan Gui, drawing much of its inspiration from the Mongolian "Urtyn duu" (or Long Song) or the direct emotional appeal of Li Rui's "Peng Zhuang" and Chen Gang's "The Greeting from Afar", whose playful rhythms and modal melodies make for a delightful bridge between cultures, while retaining distinctive Chinese characteristics. Other works approach the instruments as equal partners, where the dialogue of East and West is approached in purely sonic terms, independant of any clear, cultural associations, as in Mette Nielsen's "Stream" and Benjamin de Murashkin's "Cascades", with very different results in each case. Or as in Sejlund's "Butterfly-Rain", where the very idea of "East meets West" inspired a poetic vision that transcends political/national/temporal boundaries, becoming instead, a personal journey. In short, each of these "different dreams" whether abstract or literal, avant garde or folk-inspired or a mixture of all of these elements, provides a creative space where harmony and beauty can be explored and shared. Close your eyes and let your own dream begin.

Image Spirits: East meets West
• When Eastern and Western musical cultures meet, an original blend is created. This CD features the Chinese flautist Chen Yue and the Danish guitarist Lars Hannibal. Coming from different traditions, the two artists decided to see what comes out of the dialogue when musicians from the two traditions play together. The idea was not to try to play like musicians from other parts of the world, but to listen and learn, and try to transfer, what the two musicians have experienced into their own lives and playing.

• Chen Yue describes their meeting the following way: “A guitar and a bamboo flute was how we expressed ourselves to each other in music. Mr. Hannibal’s delicate, dynamic and experienced playing led me to the magic world where Western and Oriental cultures are wonderfully blended. When mystic plain Oriental music is mixed with a romantic Western classical style, what do you feel? This is our sincere love for beautiful music!”

• The selection of music includes works from ancient China, European Baroque music and popular and folk music from both Asia and Europe. Though there are many differences in the music, there is a lot of similarity in atmosphere that suits the mellow sound of the two instruments.
