Orlandus Lassus / Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594)
Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi secundum Mattheum
Track 1-20: Skærtorsdag
Track 21-41: Langfredag

Bo Holten, dirigent
Musica Ficta:

From its famously joyful opening ‘Jauchzet frohlocket’ to the arrival of the Wise Men from the East, the Christmas Oratorio's enduring popularity has long proved its status as a choral ‘evergreen’. As with the St John Passion (8573817-18), the cast for this production is led by Georg Poplutz as the Evangelist.

(1751 version) (New College Oxford Choir, Academy of Ancient Music, E. Higginbottom)

Handel’s most popular and joyous oratorio, a work of unfailing melodic invention and dramatic expressiveness, has become almost a British national institution, regularly performed by all manner of choirs and orchestras. This new recording provides the only modern re-
construction of Handel’s unique London performances in 1751, when he used boy treble voices not only for the choruses but for the arias as well. It is both a celebration of the British chapel choir tradition and a window onto a particular time and place in the history of Handel’s own performances of his masterpiece.

Together with the Missa Cellensis, the Stabat Mater (1767) was one of the first sacred works that Haydn composed in his new position as Kapellmeister of the Esterházy court. The Virgin Mary's vast range of emotions during the Crucifixion are reflected in Haydn's music through various musical techniques, including word-painting and even subtle elements of characterisation. Performed in Vienna in 1768, the Stabat Mater became Haydn's most popular sacred work and was circulated widely in his lifetime.

Image Sacred Choral & Organ Works Vol 1: Requiem
It was in 1947 that Duruflé completed the work that has contributed most to his reputation, the Requiem, Opus 9. This was the original version, for full orchestra and organ. Two other versions followed, one only with organ, then, in 1961, the version recorded here, for a reduced orchestra and organ, restoring probably more faithfully the character of a work that the composer described as follows:

"This Requiem is entirely composed on Gregorian themes from the Requiem Mass. Sometimes the text has been respected as a whole, with no intervention from the orchestra, which plays a supporting rôle or comments on the proceedings, or sometimes I am inspired or even completely carried away, as for example in certain developments suggested by the Latin text, notably in the Domine Jesu Christe, the Sanctus or the Libera me."

As the composer of 11 operas - it may be said that Dvorak had a well-founded understanding of the dramatic possibilities of the texts he chose to set.
the enormous popularity of his works with choral societies throughout Europe further attests to his skill in expressing the meaning of a text in a suitable evocative and memorable music.
his Stabat mater traverses a course of sad contemplation, culminating in a great hymn to the glory of Paradise and a splendidly optimistic final Amen.

Esenvalds' music is given a splendidly evocative and heartfelt performance by this clearly very fine American choir, who seem alive to the music's colours, directness and beauty Gramophone november 2017

Esenvalds' colorful, dramatic and multi-voiced works on the album reveal skillfully set narrative texts ranging from folk material to litrugical. An important new recording of works by a rising star in choral composition and a top-notch chorus and I am pleased to recommend it enthusiastically." - Morten Lauridsen
Latvian Eriks Ešenvalds has rapidly beomce one of the world's most performed choral composers. His ability to bring a dramatic text to life through textures that are lush yet permeated with a more stringent and angular aesthetic has ensured a steady stream of commissions from leading orchestras and choral forces.
The four works on the album reflect an interest in the beauty of nature, religious faith and legend. The First Tears is based on the Inuit Legend of the Raven and the Whale, a story of how grief came into the world. Passion and Resurrection is a profound and powerful exploration of Christ's death and resurrection constructed from a variety of liturgical sources.

Image St. John Passion, BWV 245 (1749 Version)
Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion is, along with the St Matthew Passion, without doubt one of the most important works he ever composed. It established a new tradition for Good Friday vespers in Leipzig, and with sublime skill Bach managed to retain a spirit of church worship while creating an almost operatic narrative that movingly depicts Christ’s trial, death, and ultimate apotheosis. Bach’s numerous revisions always demand a certain amount of scholarly decision-making, and this recording of the St John Passion uses the final 1749 version that not only draws on and reinforces the best of Bach’s original concept, but incorporates the additional movements of the 1725 version.

This complete version follows on from the success of Ralf Otto’s recordings of the St John Passion (8.573817-18) and the Christmas Oratorio (8.574001-02), which have both been widely acclaimed. This release features a cast of renowned soloists.

Image Messiah
Of all English oratorios Handel’s Messiah has always been the most overwhelmingly popular. It is the least theatrical and the most purely sacred in its choice of subject matter. The vivid choral writing – there are more choruses in Messiah than in any other Handel oratorio – coupled with the expressive density of the solo arias, have ensured its status as one of the greatest choral masterpieces in the Western canon.

The three works on this recording mark staging posts in Herbert Howells’s compositional life. Sine nomine was commissioned at Elgar’s instigation when Howells was 30 and is predominantly orchestral, with wordless parts for the two vocal soloists. This arch-like ‘spiritual meditation’ was his first extended work for larger forces. Like the Hymnus paradisi (Naxos 8.570352), the Stabat Mater is a direct musical response to the death of the composer’s nine-year-old son, and further reveals his mastery of choral and orchestral polyphony. The Te Deum signalled a fresh and new approach to settings of Anglican canticles.

'In recent years it has been an enormous thrill hearing my music being performed by The Dmitri Ensemble. This excellent, young ensemble brings a breath of fresh air to music making in this country, and are fortunate to have in their director Graham Ross one of the most exciting new musicians to appear on the radar. I am honoured and thrilled that they are choosing to mark my 50th birthday with this disc on Naxos, bringing together a number of different choral works from 1993 to 2005.'

Simon Mayr Choir, Simon Mayr Ensemble / Franz Hauk

Admired for his fusion of German and Italianate musical elements, Johann Simon Mayr is increasingly recognised as one of the most intriguing and influential composers of his time. His Requiem in G minor is shrouded in compositional obscurity but it is clear that the published version is surpassed both in scale and instrumentation by the elaborate edition performed here, which has been assembled from the autograph manuscripts. Small sections were composed by Donizetti and then corrected by his teacher, Mayr. Church style and more Romanticised elements are finely balanced in this important example of Mayr's compositional language.

Lyon National Orchestra / Jun Märkl

Olivier Messiaen's uniquely distinctive and powerfully expressive musical voice drew strength from religious faith and nature. A prestigious commission, Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum commemorates the dead of two World Wars through the transcendence of Christ's Resurrection. Scored for winds and percussion, the work is conceived for and conjures up vast spaces. Le tombeau resplendissant and Hymne are early works, but equally filled with mystery and symbolism. Fanfare magazine described Jun Märkl's previous volume in this series (Poèmes pour Mi / 8.572174) as "the best recording around of a mesmerizing masterwork".
